For a series that got it's start ate the end of the Gameboy colors life cycle, it's kinda inspiring to see how far it's come. Going from a little talked about cult hit, to getting crowded funded and being released on multiple platforms.
You have great taste my man. XD To be honest, I would like to treat all of theses lovely ladies to a night of dinner and fun. Although Risky may just dinner out me....
Obviously, the sexy little zombie gets some hugs and kisses too. Although, I already have Zombina from monster musume. I may not be able to handle TWO lively corpse! XD
It's understandable. I have the original on my 3DS Virtual Console and did buy Pirate's Curse for the 3DS, but since Risky's Revenge isn't on it, I made the swap and got all 3 sequels on the PS4. (I prefer to have them all on one console if I can. I'm OCD like that. -_-)
thedreadedzero You could, but they've either stopped selling it or removed it. I can't find it on the eShop in Australia anyway. Besides, the PS4 version is the more definitive Director's Cut version.
I remember a Game Theory episode where MatPat explained that "you want to play what your friends are playing", but Shantae is a great example that NO, I DON'T want to play what my friends are playing... I want THEM to play what I AM playing ie Shantae. With games like Overwatch, League of Legends and Pokémon GO getting so much hype, I pray to the video game overlords that Shantae would get more of the attention it deserves.
I got really interested in Shantae by this game but I got this weird habit that I play every series from the first game xD Finishing Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse soon.
I am often the opposite xD I get into a franchise on the 3rd or 4th game, and then I am interested to got back to see how it started xD The original GBC game is still my favorite ;-)
I'm the exact same way. I've been thinking of trying the series since way back when Risky's Revenge came out, but never gave it a try. With Half Genie Hero on the horizon, I finally gave in and played the series from the GBC game forward earlier this year. I don't regret it one bit. It's a wonderful series.
0:32 "I still remember the print ads for the original game back when it was released on the Game Boy Color." DON'T REMIND ME! I remember them, too. I remember wanting the game just because Shantae was hot. I also remember something else I don't want to remember...or talk about..........
I wish I had known of Shantae when this was still a kickstarter game. Would have loved to turn into a tinkerbat even if it wasn't something I might not use often.
I love the Shantae series and I'm super bummed that they didn't meet the full voice acting stretch goal. Cristina Vee is too good of a voice actor to only have a couple of snippets here and there. Hopefully the next game in the series will be able to have full voice acting.
yeah, I got into Shante with this installment of the series. But when I found out the game is originally a metriodvania style game, Seven Sirens is no doubt what the series wants to be. And here I thought I found a cool series to hook too. You'll be disappointed to find out Seven Sirens went back to the roots of the gameplay Shante instead of making another master piece like this uwu.
Still prefer Pirate's Curse over this, mainly cause I love the Metroidvania format more, but definately still a fun game, Jake Kaufman is still a god when it comes to music.. Gotta wait for that Risky mode tho
This game deserves credit for bringing originality and a breath of fresh air to platformers. To a Nintendo audience that's been fed Mario games one after the other, it's pretty refreshing
If I had a time machine, definitely the 20th or so thing I would do would be to go back to 2013 and dump a shit load of money onto this game's kickstarter campaign, I NEED THAT FULL VOICE OVER IN MY LIFE DAMMIT!
Shantae Half-Genie Hero is such a great game. Even the characters and bosses are great. For special matters I hope Twitch and Vinegar come back in future Shantae games in the future. Twitch and Vinegar are such great and hypercompetent characters.
My only real grip with the game is the control layout where it's easy to press the wrong button often in any situation (Jumping mapped to the Wi U Pro Controller's "B" button being my favorite and WTF example. COME ON! GET IT TOGETHER!). Otherwise, very solid and fun little game that was worth the wait.
I'm so glad I was introduced to this series because of BrainScratch. I love this game and pirate's curse pretty much equally, and this would be a strong contender for my GotY if Pokemon hadn't come out this year...
If you did not already get this game, then I recommend getting the Wii U version. After all, all of the Shantae games (even the first one) are all on Nintendo systems, with the first one being Nintendo exclusive. This series started off on the Gameboy Color.
That's a good game for its price, colorful, well-made and enjoyable. I have to warn french players that the localisation is really botched (lots of typing mistakes manly)
Finished the game the other day. I think I agree with your review, overall the pirates curse is my favourite one still because I just prefer the equipment to the transformations. Hopefully the Risky Boots DLC will solve that urge though!
You have a bit of a critique point. You talk about the "classic" feel of Shantae, but i think the new art is kind of a downgrade from The Pirate's Curse. Don't get me wrong,i really like the new art,but i think the pixelart style made it feel much more comfortable, and more like classic Shantae. I'd say the character portraits in dialogue moments also suffered a bit from the new artstyle. But hey, that's just me...
Nox Xelor In fact, that was my only beef with Pirates curse. There were so many cool bosses, but was once you beat them you could never fight them again. I really hope Wayforward makes a boss gauntlet one of these day for people who enjoy the boss battles.
Okay, I KNOW this ia a nitpick, but considering the great animation details the series has been known for ever since the original.. I find it lazyy design that, when Shantae enters a building, she just fades into the door. In every previous game you actively saw her turn around and walk into it.
wayfoward is an awesome studio . i've bought this oen two days ago and the onyl regret i have is not to have bought it day one .. cos even at full price it's well deserved.
I admit I was a little disappointed that the other character campaigns were pushed back to become DLC. I was so damn excited at the prospect of playing as Rottytops. Other than that little setback, the game was satisfying enough for me. On my first playthrough, I fell just short of 100% completion, having missed two Heart Containers and a key.
It's nice, but I've some issues with it. 1) It doesn't have a coherent structure, both plot-wise and mechanic-wise. 2) It's extremely linear; backtracking too early mostly gives you key items which you cannot use until you're specifically at the points of the game where you're supposed to backtrack. 3) Many upgrades end up pointless/useless, and/or used for only 1 specific point in the game. 4) The 2nd last stage feels rushed; There are significantly less collectibles in it then the rest of the stages.
It's a bit of a shame that the Vita version took a performance hit. I'll probably buy it again on PS4 if it goes on sale in the future, just to see all those wonderful animations in 60fps. :D
Stupid question but is it essential to play the predecessors before this one? I kinda started with Pirate's Curse but was left out with the part about her losing her genie powers and couldn't bother continuing that game ever since. :(
I have a few issues with this game, one of them being that I have a WiiU and I play it on the gamepad and thus some parts of the game looks weird every time I play it but not online. In this I mean the red colors are automatically gradient pixels. By that I mean on the gamepad, the pants will have this very obvious pixelation on it, but when she is negashantae, her hair will have it, as well as the bird Wrench will have a very slight pixilization on his purple head. Not sure if it's a gamepad issue compared to a screen one, but it looks good otherwise. p.s. Is there a point to buying the lv3 hair whip speed upgrade. Lv2 seems fast enough and as a former chunli lightning kick presser, I find that the speed between lv2 and lv3 are either the same or that lv3 is infinite which I can't tell the speed of. I find it odd. p.p.s. A hint for those who want a much more easier boss fight with Ammo Baron get obliterate magic.
You can start with this game. It happens after the first 3 games, but it's written in a way to reintroduce the characters to newcomers. Either way, I recommend the Shantae games. They're really fun and humorous.
The game was recently updated with a free hardcore mode and there are four playable character campaigns as well as three costumes for Shantae still in development
On sale on steam atm, I ended buying three of the games yesterday. Also gotta say that this game, looks well like Duck Tales remastered, clearly same engine and developer, wonder if any assets were reused though.
Having played both half genie hero and Pirates curse I have to say in its current form Half genie hero is not as good as pirates curse. I miss dungeons being in the game, and it feels like there is less to do in half genie hero than there is in Pirate's curse. Though both games are linear I feel half genie hero has a lot less room for exploration. Another thing I like better in pirate's curse which isn't really half genie hero's fault is I just like the pirate items a lot better than the transformations.I know they can't really bring that back for Shantae, but the pirate items just suited the levels so much better than the transformations do in my opinion. I do not dislike half genie hero, in fact I like it a lot, but I personally think pirate's curse is a better game for the same price.
Im a bit dissapointed the PsTV compatibility got dropped from the vita version, bacause of that i had to buy a second copy for the ps4. But after finally getting to play it after that i had a blast with this game i 100% mu first playthrough and after beating it I immediately started a 2nd game. This game is great it was worth the wait
I've been thinking about getting into Shantae but I am really cheap so I'm like no thank you when it comes to Shantae even though I know that Pirate's curse is like $20
Good game! However, if you are interested in the series, start with Pirate's Curse or even Risky's Revenge. They are superior in terms of story, dialogue and exploration. Also this review does a terrible job at telling how you basically should play those games before 1/2 Genie Hero anyways, because character introduction is basically non-existent in the latter. They just throw them out as if they expect the audience to already know them - which is fine! But someone unfamiliar with the series will be lost or simply won't care about characters at all, OR even don't get some of the jokes because they refer to previous games!
cant believe xseed blackmailed the PC and PS4 players with shitty framerate and optimizing this for the wiiU with a locked 60fps. The irony couldnt have been bigger here. This game could easily run on the Vita and yet ps4 and even PC are struggling to keep a locked 60fps?
MetalSonicReject You should probably get it now. A Switch version might be long from now, similar to how the Xbox/PlayStation versions of Pirate's Curse came out like 2-3 months later
mechashadow Pirate's Curse and Risky's Revenge start off easy so they are the most beginner friendly Shantae games. Half-Genie Hero is more like a reboot of the first game and is very difficult through the whole time, it is a fun game but can really give player frustrations at times.
the only issue i have with Half Genie Hero is that the Steam port only supports Xbox controllers & i can't really play it with my generic usb controller unless i use JoytoKey :/
PS4 version is good, though it feels like the framerate drops in the actual stages. Anyone else? I did plan to get this on Wii U, but my Wii U ACTUALLY broke :c Buying that version later anyway, alongside the (hopefully) Switch version.
I played pirates curse and didn't like it, I felt metroidvania wasn't a good fit for the tone of the game, especially with the backtracking. I am so glad to see that is completely gone. I'll be sure to get this game as soon as I can.
Saying that the metroidvania aspects of the game are completely gone is kinda an overstatement. You still have to _constantly_ backtrack in Half-Genie Hero, since you have to do fetch quests and trading chains between each level. If you didn't like Pirate's Curse, it's unlikely you'll like this one.
I really want to try it but there's just so many games comming out this season i don't know. It depends on how much money i get for my birthday (I am a minor, so i can't work).
The only exclusive content to backers are the blue Shantae costume, classic risky colors, hyper light drifter sword, and tinkerbat transformation. The 4 campaigns and 3 costumes is free for backers and will be paid DLC available to purchase for everyone else.
For a series that got it's start ate the end of the Gameboy colors life cycle, it's kinda inspiring to see how far it's come. Going from a little talked about cult hit, to getting crowded funded and being released on multiple platforms.
it is very impressive
You can have her. I want Rottytops.
And unlike MightyNo.9, lived up to the expectations.
I love how her pajamas cover more torso skin than her daily wear
They look adorable
To be fair she comes from a warm location, I'm also from one and people around here walk around showing a lot of skin 😂
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess same.
I can't STAND being in the cold thanks to my southern Californian blood.
Damn that giant mermaid boss though, she's super hot
U SICK FUCK
FBI
Wait Attract automatically draws in nearby gems and hearts? I thought it makes males fall in love with Shantae
Nah. That's just already a given. One look at that little cutie, and your already hooked.
I am more attracted to the Snake Lady in the pot, and the Mermaid Queen in her angry state.... but I also love Shantae ofcourse :-)
You have great taste my man. XD To be honest, I would like to treat all of theses lovely ladies to a night of dinner and fun. Although Risky may just dinner out me....
Haha, save some for me xD hey Rotty is kinda hot too, if you like green skinned zombie girls (hey I ain't racist xD)
Obviously, the sexy little zombie gets some hugs and kisses too. Although, I already have Zombina from monster musume. I may not be able to handle TWO lively corpse! XD
Unlimited invincibility.
Shantae: Half Genie Untouchable Heroic Girl
Minrod Vils Oh shes touchable ;)
3:58 "Each character is expressive and bouncy."
Yeah, especially the females in the game. harhar...
You right
4:08 "but i was continuly impressed how detailed bosses could be" ofcourse he took the mermade as example...
Giga Mermaid is waifu. haha.
Get metronome
Start dancing
Watch quick boob bounces all day.
Not really, but there is a lot of giggle there.
I did like that they turned down the amount giggle from Pirate's Curse. It just seemed way too excessive for me.
I'd definitely love to give the Shantae series a try since I LOVE platformers and it's on my bucket list. I'll get into it in the future.
I really recommend the Shantae games. They're really fun and humorous.
PS4 version.

Even the 1/! sequence is identical. This is what I call dedication.

I never played any of the Shantae games, I will start in that one.
it's pretty much made as a jumping-on point so that's probably a good idea!
good idea
If you want the best one, try Pirate's Curse. Half Genie Hero is the weakest out of the four in my opinion.
Perplexum Really? I do agree that Pirates curse is the best, but this one is significantly better than the first two imo.
The Villain of Overhype I have PC and 1/2GH tied. RR and S are the weakest. in my opinion.
I think i prefer "pirate's curse" , but this one was great too
This game is so much fun. It's on the short side, but it's quality content.
shantae for smash
That would be tremendous.
I wish I had known of Shantae when this was still a kickstarter game. Would have loved to turn into a tinkerbat even if it wasn't something I might not use often.

GameXplain? Reviewing the PS4 version? Naaaahhh, I must be seeing things.
Risky reminds me of Captain Syrup...
Dammit, now I want a Wario Land/Shantae crossover
Nick Janopoulos This would be amazing!
@Nick Janopoulos When that happens we'll all explode in happiness.
Both games kinda fit in the same subgenre too, so why not? ;)
That's a good game for its price, colorful, well-made and enjoyable.
I have to warn french players that the localisation is really botched (lots of typing mistakes manly)
Although Pirate's Curse is still my favorite int e series, this game is really fun and I absolutely love the art style to death
This has got to be one of my favorite games of 2016
Finished the game the other day. I think I agree with your review, overall the pirates curse is my favourite one still because I just prefer the equipment to the transformations. Hopefully the Risky Boots DLC will solve that urge though!

Can't wait for the new Squid barron, starring Shantae game.
I love how the backgrounds make this look like this world came from a cartoon circa 1990.
The giant mermaid boss was easily the highlight of the game. Fighting something that gargantuan but mobile was very epic.
Nox Xelor If only the game gave you the option to fight the bosses as many times as you like :(
Christopher Adepoju So true.
Nox Xelor In fact, that was my only beef with Pirates curse. There were so many cool bosses, but was once you beat them you could never fight them again. I really hope Wayforward makes a boss gauntlet one of these day for people who enjoy the boss battles.

Micktendo Giga Mermaid ;-)
wayfoward is an awesome studio . i've bought this oen two days ago and the onyl regret i have is not to have bought it day one .. cos even at full price it's well deserved.
Nice review!! I;ve been looking forward to this game for quite some time :)
Notice that the enemies all get blasted off screen like in smash bros. I guess WayForward haven't given up on Shantae being in smash...
Just got the special edition for Wii U. Never played this series before so looking forward to playing it.
I wish I had the money to buy the $25 pledge for the soundtrack.
1:26
TOAD!?
No that's the mayor (and yes he looks like toad but he is not toad)
Game of the year when RottyTops DLC comes out.
Friends 'Till the End is the closest we'll get to that.
I played the game through with all dlcs..it is one of my favorite games all time..besides wonderboy 3 and Persona 5
My review of the game:
It's fun, it's cute...
But compared to Pirate's Curse, not as good...
Still, not a bad game overall...
Pirate's Curse was great, but I missed the animal transformations.
This game's a soft-reboot to the story. Every other Shantae game follows a continuation of the storyline excluding this one.
Hey everyone, did you know that Temmie Chang helped with the art for the enemy at 3:16?
I knew
👍
Only happy Nepeta allowed!
zelda meets mega man - TONS of fun!
I find it odd.

i agree i bought this game yesterday for the wii u and i absolutely love it i am going to get it for the vita as well. it is a really good game.
I need this game......
any Christmas money I get is going towards getting this. I WANT IT THAT BAD!!!!
The Shantae series just caught my eye, and I want to get into the series. Can anyone recommend me on which game to start with?
You can start with this game. It happens after the first 3 games, but it's written in a way to reintroduce the characters to newcomers. Either way, I recommend the Shantae games. They're really fun and humorous.
Chubbners you should start with Shantae and the pirates curse!!!!!!
Chubbners And if you have a 3ds, it's $20.00 on the eshop!!!!
This was my first Shantae game! I just 100% the hero mode of this game! I want more!
The game was recently updated with a free hardcore mode and there are four playable character campaigns as well as three costumes for Shantae still in development
Never tried any game in the series, will get this when i'm done with my backlog
JacobOlli I really recommend the Shantae games. They're really fun and humorous.
Shantaes the best!
On sale on steam atm, I ended buying three of the games yesterday.

Merry Christmas!
Ugh, I want to get this game so bad, but I can't decide if I should buy the Wii U version or wait for a possible Switch version?
MetalSonicReject You should probably get it now. A Switch version might be long from now, similar to how the Xbox/PlayStation versions of Pirate's Curse came out like 2-3 months later
"many characters are bouncy" the plotis real
Hey, guys! We should go buy matching purses! Who says they're only for women, right guys?!... Guys?...
Supertron So heroic.
i have the wii u version, all that is missing is a shantae amiibo (hey if shovel knight can get one, why not shantae)
This a good starting point?
Shantae rankings anyone?
And which would you say is best for a beginner?
mechashadow Probably Half-Genie Hero, since the Metroidvania style of Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse may leave you confused at times.
+Flitten Sonoma but you still have to backtrack right? I only have risky's revenge and Pirates' curse so should I start with Pirates?
+[AR]-[BROE] even better than Half Genie Hero? Wow that's some high praise there..
mechashadow Pirate's Curse and Risky's Revenge start off easy so they are the most beginner friendly Shantae games. Half-Genie Hero is more like a reboot of the first game and is very difficult through the whole time, it is a fun game but can really give player frustrations at times.
In terms of quality:
1. Pirate's Curse
2. Half-Genie Hero
3. Risky's Revenge
4. Shantae
From easiest to hardest:
1. Half-Genie Hero
2. Risky's Revenge
3. Pirate's Curse
4. Shantae
I would have rather had more levels and playable characters over a crap ton of transformations.
Corey Mckee good thing more playable characters are on the way.
LuigiHero I meant I'd rather have more characters like risky mode and hero mode in the base game at launch over a ton of transformations. Not dlc
I got this on the Wii U, and I would like to note that the game pad has 0 use. All it does is show what's on the TV.
Maybe they will make another Drawn to Life too now.
the only issue i have with Half Genie Hero is that the Steam port only supports Xbox controllers & i can't really play it with my generic usb controller unless i use JoytoKey :/
I want to marry Rottytops
I'm playing the vita version.
Overall it looks great, with some minor framerate issues here and there.
also, this shantae game is portable, PS Vita.
Is there a physical version of the game for the european Wii U?
Don't call it POOPTOOT!
Nintendo Boy Ultra POOPTOOT!
😁😁😁
for me, its a manga series that shouldn't be a manga, but a gory comic series. VERY BIG COMICS. BERSERK. I wish people read this.
PS4 version is good, though it feels like the framerate drops in the actual stages. Anyone else?
I did plan to get this on Wii U, but my Wii U ACTUALLY broke :c
Buying that version later anyway, alongside the (hopefully) Switch version.
***** Nothing game breaking on my end, have you found something like that?
I like the artwork ;)
Minors can work, there's just child labor laws in place so you can't work a lot of hours or during certain times of the day
Is this out on WiiU already?
I'm disappointed they removed all but one of the dances and the free-roam.
Question are the oyher future content only exclusive for backers or can non backers eventually pay for yhe dlc?
The only exclusive content to backers are the blue Shantae costume, classic risky colors, hyper light drifter sword, and tinkerbat transformation. The 4 campaigns and 3 costumes is free for backers and will be paid DLC available to purchase for everyone else.
Is there Wii U exclusive content or is it exactly the same?
No exclusives for any system!
Where can i find this game?
Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC
@@KoalaSpace360 why untill march 2023?
Should i actually get this?
For $20 it's kind of a rip-off. It's a fun enough game but it's so short for only 20 bucks and has little replay value.
Which version should be recommended?
Vortex Luigi Rosalina 55 Maybe the PS4.
i made a review of this game yesterday.
This game looks very interesting
WesmyGaming Yeah, I recommend the Shantae games. They're really fun and humorous.
***** I'll be sure to give them a try as soon as I can
