How to plant coleus in pots as the perfect companion plant

- Do you know coleus? If not, you need to! It’s such an amazing foliage plant which I’m planting in pots and containers as a companion plant together with dahlias. You can make the most striking combinations and I really hope to inspire you.
I show how I’m planting just one variety in each pot, which make it much easier to design a stunning container garden from early spring to late fall.
I’m also showing how the same spot was looking for three weeks ago.

My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

Coleus has become fun with colors, shapes and sizes. I like the idea of a smaller pot with the focus on one plant. Beautiful and we!coming entrance.
It's such a delight to see your garden and sharing what I can do in mine. You are my favorite channel from the US. Every gardener here seems to always promote that one PW brand, and it's refreshing to see someone else is using many other or different plants that are just as beautiful when planted in containers. The plant colors are so pleasing to look at when combined in a color scheme. Thank you for todays lesson.
Any color is a great color I don't complain. Coleus are such a forgiving plant if a piece breaks it will grow and the plant will fill in again. Thanks for sharing Mr. Dalby.
If you take the broken piece and put it in a glass of water for a week or so it'll root and make another little plant that'll grow into a big one. Love coleus for their ease of growth and colourings.

Coleus one of my favorite plants. Five years ago they were scarce here(I was told nobody wants those) and I started growing them from seed.
Now they are back so I do both buy and plant seed.
That's always funny, "Nobody wants those." The fashions, silly. That's where seeds open the whole world.
When I was a little girl we would only grow them as house plants and it was always the one and only variety. I only learned a few years ago that you can actually grow them in the landscape and that there are so many varieties 😊
@@aksileb Just read your comment and I didn’t realize you could use those as houses plants. Coleus don’t make it through the winter where I live. I buy these every year to put in my window boxes in my shaded area. I will use them as house plants in the fall.

In my country we call Coleus, Joseph's Coat because of the colour variety. It's a gorgeous plant

My father (born in UK in 1920) always called it that, too. They were one of his favourite plants and remind me of him.
I love the way you have your pots arranged. One thing I notice is you really don’t have any “spillers” in your pots and I love that idea
I find such pleasure in listening to the way the gentleman speaks English, especially the charming way he enuncitates every syllable even when it's not quite right. It's almost melodic. I wish I spoke so fluently in my other languages. Thank you for your videos, sir!

Coleus have come a long way in the last few years, there are so many new colors. I love the flower colors and the patina on your pots, everything looks absolutely beautiful especially surrounding those glorious Japanese maples.

Envious of those Japanese maples!
Just beautiful. Coleous coloration combinations just get better and better every year. I've got Proven Winners "Sky Fire" coleous in a pot and it's colors start on a ruffled leaf with yellow going to oranges then red with a lime green stripe. Simply stunning and a show stopper. I planted it with 2 "Conga Red" calibrachoa plants. The 3 plants are a simple planting in a blue & cream colored striped ceramic pot but the results are eye catching and showy in a grouping of pots.

I am growing 2 varieties of coleus from seed this year - just sprouted. Looking forward to planting each one alone in a pot for the versatility after watching this! It makes sense, don't know why I never thought to do it this way. BTW, I love the color combo with the tulips and those maples!
