  • Tuesday 9th July 2024 saw The Railway Touring Company chartering their annual 'End of Southern Steam' tour to Weymouth, marking 57 years since the final steam workings over the Southern Region of British Railways on Sunday 9th July 1967. Appropriately, the honours of working the tour went to Merchant Navy Class No.35028 'Clan Line', a key player in those final days of steam. Starting out from London Victoria, the run saw the Bulleid Pacific heading down the South West Main Line and, later, West of England Main Line to Yeovil Junction. Here, Clan Line would detach from the train, which continued under diesel power, running up to Yeovil Pen Mill before reversing for the run down to Weymouth via the Heart of Wessex Line. After the usual turning and servicing in Yeovil Railway Centre, Clan Line would make its way down to Weymouth with its support coach to re-join the train for the return run to London back up the South West Main Line.
We begin at Three Arch Bridge, between Whitchurch and Andover, where the morning mizzle has well and truly arrived as Clan Line barrels along up the short 1 in 275 gradient ahead of the drop down into Andover. A little under 2 hours later and the mizzle has now turned to full on rain, bringing out all manner of slimy critters as we find ourselves on Wood Road overbridge near Stowell, just west of Templecombe Station. Recovering from a speed restriction further up the line, we see Clan Line forging up the 1 in 100 gradient from Templecombe, slipping slightly but recovering well, before diving under the bridge.
Mercifully, the rain had ceased when it came time to film the return run. Set up atop the first of the two tunnels at Bincombe, we capture Clan Line lifting the train away from Weymouth in fine style, as it lays down the power up the 1 in 52 gradient of Upwey Bank, as another resident mollusc watches on. Despite having a diesel on the rear, no assistance was given, making for an equivalent load of around 13 coaches or so. A fine showing from the mighty Merchant and its crew!
Not wishing to add any further mileage or time to the day, it was then time to head home. Despite frustrations with the weather and - in the case of the walk down to the bridge at Stowell - a very muddy farm track, it was still a decent day overall, capturing one of the main line steam scene's very best in action.
Filmed on a Panasonic HC-X1500 with an Audio-Technica BP4025 microphone.

Another excellent quality video. Thank you for being out in the wet.
Not just great railway videography, but a lovely shot of what we in distant Oz regard as pests - a snail.
Like the others I never receive notifications, and only remember to visit your site on occasion. This may partly explain the fewer views you are sadly experiencing.

Thanks very much, Edmund 👍 I believe snails also have a similar reputation here. They make for some nice b-roll, at least 😅 Interesting about the notifications. Video performance has always been a series of peaks and valley, but this recent drop off is certainly much bigger than I've had before.

Seems like every time Clan Line isn't on the Pullmans, it's the best performing loco on the mainline right now. And I honestly don't think I'm exaggerating. I'm sure the four different channels filming it at that spot at Bincombe Tunnel wouldn't have argued!

It's first run this year was with the Pullmans and it was the best run of the year.

Right but whenever it's not on the Pullmans, it always puts on a great show. I guess because its normal Pullman route isn't particularly challenging, and times like this and its Bath Pullman run are.

And its first tour back this year was Pullmans to Bath, it was a very good run though.

English weather and English critters :))
I wonder why I haven't got notifications of your videos (I'm subscribed).

Thanks for watching 😄 Curious you should say that, as I have noticed an unfortunate drop off in views and engagement over the last few months. Not sure what's changed, as I certainly haven't 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@SpeedToTheWest No notification of your latest video with Royal Scot as well. Your channel is saved in my browser, so I just visit it from time to time.

@@ncs8730 oh, damn, that's unfortunate. Personally, though, I've never turned on notifications for any channel, myself. For as long as I've been using CZcams I've always just checked the subscriptions page and, so far, haven't missed anything. Maybe I should stop telling people to turn on notifications and just do that instead 😅
