Portable Nintendo Wii U

  • Hi, this video shows you how to make your Nintendo Wii U portable. It is NOT as portable as the Nintendo Switch because you still have to carry the Wii U console but you can take it and use it anywhere in the world without access to AC power.
This video will only be relevant to current Wii U users who might want to use the Wii U on the go.
If you are looking to buy a new portable console then obviously you would buy the 2DS XL, 3DS XL, PS Vita or Nintendo Switch but I spent £35 (less than the price of a Switch 1st party game) to make my existing Wii U portable which in my opinion is money well spent for the added flexibility to play Wii U as well as Wii, N64, SNES etc. on the go.
    WARNING!!!!
You would need to make sure that the backpack had enough airflow around the Wii U console to stop overheating so the rear fan and top and side vents needs to get airflow. Ideally you want the Wii U console out to keep cool.
If you do use a setup similar to the one used in the video then you will need to glue the voltage selector on the laptop charger to 15V because if it was bouncing around in a backpack then it could get knocked and jump to 20V etc and damage the Wii U. It would be best to find a power supply that only outputs 15V to reduce the risk of damage.
    Many thanks Vince.

Some issues I'd worry about that aren't addresses in the video.
1.) The Wii U could possibly overheat In a bag without proper airflow.
2.) The Power converter could easily be switched to an a different voltage because the switch on the box is exposed, possibly harming the hardware.
Cool concept though. I'm going to look into doing similar concepts.

Yeah, I thought about the power selector switch while editing so I added that to the bottom of the description, it would need to be glued/taped/stuck in place on 15V. It would be interesting to test the overheating in a backpack to see how long it takes or whether it even does as it is quite cool running.
      Thanks for the comments :-)

Hi again, just tested it now with rear fan completely covered and playing Xenoblade Chronicles X via Disc in the backpack with the zip closed. It only lasted 20 minutes before it cut out due to overheating. The Wii U is still working when it cooled down but if using it in a bag then it will definitely need modification of the bag to allow airflow around the rear fans and side vents :-)

I really love the idea of a backpack portable gaming system like this wirelessly tied to a tablet controller and I really do think it has its uses. It fills a nice medium area between a super powerful console that needs to be tied to your home and a handheld which has to make sacrifices for being all in one and light enough to easily hold in your hands. So I am surprised no company officially sells any hardware to convert consoles into a system like this.

I guess a good way to still use your physical discs is to use homebrew to rip them to your Wii U's flash or hard drive. This video is quite inventive and makes me appreciate just how lightweight and power-efficient the Wii U is compared to most other consoles. Of course, this is pretty much only meant for people who don't want to rebuy their entire Wii U library for the Switch, lol.

This is pretty neat, to solve overheating issues you could get a messenger bag and cut a hole in the back where the fan would be and make a slot that the wii u would fit into with the fan facing the part where you cut the hole and secure it with velcro strips or something.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  Před 6 lety +3

I wish I mentioned the overheating in the video!!! Personally I can't play and walk at the same time so the backpack closed wouldn't be needed for me :-) I just use it for different locations in the house (and hopefully garden when it warms up) and for my kids in the car so I do not need a backpack so overheating wouldn't happen but without a modified backpack/bag this would be a big problem.

For example, the Indian Pacific which goes all the way from Sydney to Perth and vice-versa.
The compartments have 240/120v power outlets and all you need is your Wii U console, its controller/power packs, a power board and games which have off-TV play.

While its seems strange at first, it actually made me think about the options we have for access to portable options of gaming or other means besides using phones, Wii U like you presented, Vita with mobile hotspotting, PS TV similarly, older consoles (more so on the main console side than portables since obviously battery packs compatible with technology or their time or just batteries, depends on the portable console). maybe in a similar way but obviously less network use compared to the other two. I'm really surprised, this was very interesting, I do mean that seriously. :)

I'd believe that, I had seen your switch/ps4 video a while ago, so I don't think such an idea would be far fetched with many of the similar connections, power (not sure really on that front) and other methods someone could come up with being reasonable to connect and maintain in such a way to work nowadays. :)
