Plantar plate tears can be one of the most difficult running injuries to heal quickly. X-rays show bone well, but don't show ligaments very well. If you suspect you have a plantar plate sprain and go to the doctor, you may wonder whether or not plantar plate injury show up on x-ray at all. This video explains what is visible on an x-ray of your foot that may tell you if you are at risk of a plantar plate tear, or what changes on x-ray are visible when you have a completely torn plantar plate ligament. Once you understand that, you can make a decision about whether or not you need x-rays of your foot for a suspected plantar plate sprain in the ball of the foot.

Very interesting! I slipped and jammed my toes open on a 1” metal beam between 3rd and 4th toe. Got a pretty bad plantar plate tear, in a boot now but most likely will need surgery. Glad I could watch this and continue to learn about this injury

Have flat feet and think I've always had a big gap between 2nd and 3rd toes and lesser gap between 1st and 2nd toes; do I have bilateral plantar plate injuries or is it just me ? Having and pains after recent 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture

Interesting. I can't say whether or not you have bilateral plantar plate injuries without talking to you and discussing in detail. We could get on webcam call or phone call today or tomorrow to help you figure out. But you also might get a lot out of the Plantar Plate Masterclass (its about half an hour) so you can get a much better understanding of plantar plate injuries. You can get it here: www.docontherun.com/plantarplatemasterclass/
