  • The denial is REAL with Virgie Tovar and company as they flaunt obesity, deny the consequences, and hide behind a veil of compassion to "defend people" unnecessarily against the oppression of modern civilization...and health...

My mother in law weighed a good 400#, she had at least 7 knee replacements, diabetes, ankles messed up, you name it, she had it. When her docs would say she needed to lose weight, she’d find a new one. She ended up having a heart attack (the widow maker) & was told she shouldn’t have lived. She started exercising & eating right, lost a shit ton of weight, her knees are fine, are ankles are fine, and she no longer takes insulin shots. She takes one pill a day for her diabetes. I actually never thought about how men don’t jump on the “body positivity” movement, that’s actually very telling of it all. I believe it’s mainly because us women care so much about how we look and appear to other people that when we’re overweight, we get highly insecure. I think that with women shouting “healthy at every size” they are just internally trying to hide their insecurities by finding acceptance.
I’ve struggled with my weight for such a long time, but I am finally getting my life on track. No matter what size I’ve been, I’ve never been a fan of the fat acceptance movement, it truly is so unhealthy to have that mentality. What I do believe in is feeling SEXY at every size, but that couldn’t be further from being healthy. I don’t know, it’s sad truthfully.

Jessica Kennedy I agree, I had to learn to love/respect myself in the skin I was in to build up the determination to care for myself enough to start losing the weight. Self respect is different than self acceptance. When you respect yourself you look to improve in all aspects of life, acceptance makes you stagnant.

I HATED how I look for the first 44 years of my life...so much so that I couldn’t even look at my reflection in the mirror when disrobing to shower. Only in the past few years have I learnt to love myself. 😁 Thanks for the post ‘cause it’s so true.

I think body positivity was great way back when it was a movement pointing out that photoshopping models' bodies into literally impossible proportions and supporting people with disfigurements that were out of their control to be accepted. Now its been hijacked by obese people who are so deep in denial that they want to separate their terrible eating habits and sedentary lifestyle from the consequences.
For me - no thank you. Nutritious food is satiating and delicious if you know how to cook or meal prep. Exercise feels great if you find the exercise you enjoy. Losing weight is possible with commitment and discipline.

Being a fat person myself, who is working on it because my health is at risk and I have three kids who need a healthy mom, like I am okay with the part where they're encouraging good self esteem and caring about/for yourself at whatever size you are, but when you get into the territory of a woman in my situation being told she should not share her before and after pictures as it's fat shaming to others (has not happened to me, but I have seen it in multiple places) then that's too far in the wrong direction.

We are now required to help patients that have a BMI over 30 to start a healthy lifestyle , exercising, eating better, etc. The doctor has to chart that we discussed this with them. Story time...
I am a 36 year old man who eats healthy and exercises regularly. I am not overweight. One year ago at age 35 I suffered a massive heart attack that I almost didn't survive. I went into cardiac arrest in the emergency room and had to be resuscitated after my heart and breathing stopped. Obviously I lived or I wouldn't be typing this but the type of heart attack I suffered is what they call a widow maker. Most people don't survive. One thing that stuck with me was when the cardiologist was talking to me weeks later and she very bluntly told me "If you hadn't been as healthy as you were when you had your heart attack you wouldn't have lived." If a healthy 35 year old man can suffer a massive heart attack and barely survive then I can't even imagine what would happen to someone who is obese. I've since been working with my cardiologist and a dietician to closely monitor my diet and incorporating exercise specifically for heart health.
When I say healthy what I mean is not overweight, exercise regularly, and eating a fairly healthy diet. I didn't learn until afterward from my brother that high blood pressure and cardiac issues are common in my family. If I had known I would have taken more precautions to prevent this from happening. Yes, my doctor does know these things now and monitors my health a lot more closely. I lost my parents fairly young and I am estranged from most of my family so that's how I didn't know these things.
Sorry about the length but I thought it important to tell people that even if you can't completely prevent health issues from arising you're overall health can play a big factor in your ability to survive or recover from something life threatening. I was also lucky in the fact that I had just arrived to the ER in an ambulance when I went into cardiac arrest. That helped too.
Bottom line: YOUR WEIGHT AND HEALTH CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Just thought about throwing my story out there.
I‘m 18 years old, male and have been overweight in my early teens. When I was about 15 years old, I felt bad, I was drousy all the time, I had high blood-pressure and didn‘t look good. That was when I decided for myself that I wanted to change, I wanted to get a grip.
I started with daily pushups, starting with one on the first day, two on the second, so on and so forth. I stopped taking the bus and rode to school on bike instead. I stopped eating junkfood altogether and drank only water, no juice, no softdrinks, nothing. Coke Zero was a fine substitute. After a while, I started developing muscles and became slightly bulky.
One year ago, I started taking building muscle very seriously, I spent my pocket money on multicomponent whey protein powder instead of video games, a hobby that I have sunk many hours in and wanted a new set of dumbbells instead of a new console for Christmas. But in my mind I was still insecure, but on the outside, I was lean and muscular, very attractive to say the least (or so I‘ve been told). Girls started flirting with me, clubbing became more enjoyable by the day and cooking is one of my favorite hobbies to this day.
I work out regularly, I eat healthy and spend most of my time with friends and family. I am today more happy than I‘ve ever been.
The most important lesson I‘ve learned in life is „be yourself your best friend, because good friends tell each other the truth“.
    Stay happy

I think fat acceptance is mostly supported by women because of the way that our bodies are viewed by a lot of people. There is undoubtedly a lot of pressure for women to look a certain way, and I think a movement that says that all bodies are beautiful appeals to a lot of people for that reason. It's sort of a way to say "screw you, men. I'll be fat if I want to". I mean, as an avid lifter with a healthy bf%, I STILL feel self conscious about my body at times. I think members of the body positivity movement need to understand that they can get healthy for themselves, not for others. Losing weight probably feels like "giving in" to a lot of people.

Good point and I agree with you. But you are only "giving it" to yourself when you are obese, then get hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, are out of breath and eventual premature death. Most overweight people are angry at the world because of a trauma in their childhood that makes them overeat, and they don't have the energy and mobility to enjoy life to the fullest. What I am saying is they are only hurting themselves even if they want to 'stick it' to society.

It makes me cringe when I see stuff from Tess or Vergie because I used to be like that a bit when I was at my highest, a lot of this movement comes from a high self insecurity while not wanting to admit that they have the problem. It’s hard to get help when you don’t want it or aren’t ready for it yet. It’s easier to just fake the problem away when you fill that space with feel good acceptance. It’s not healthy but like me I just didn’t want to accept that something was wrong with me. A lot of the time it takes getting to reality inducing rock bottom to actually make a change for the better.

(Many people in the fat acceptance movement are well above 250 and size 18, I used to be part of that and they considered me to have "thin privilege" lollll.) I started losing weight, noticed how it was easier to move at 240. It's significantly easier to do everything now that I'm down to 200. I can't wait to see how much better I'll feel once I hit 190, 180, 170, maybe lower. I have health conditions (non-weight related) that cause chronic pain, along with fatigue and other symptoms, so I can't afford to have any extra weight or not take care of my health. At least I get it now. The point of my rambling is that I want people to know that even 10 lbs lost along with a healthy lifestyle will make you feel better mentally and physically, especially if you have any type of health issues/ disabilities.

It’s left me with good habits now that I’m off to collage.

Your stance on motivation has helped me get back on the fitness bandwagon. I haven't felt motivated all week, but I have still worked out.
I felt if I continued waiting for motivation I would continue to put back on the weight I lost, and lose the muscle I built up.

I went from obese to athlete in 18 months and I've decided to now help people. I met a woman at the gym that I am now helping her to lose the last 15 pounds shes struggling with. Getting better and helping people is just part of being human.

Firstly, I am obese but, I'm not and never have been part of the healthy at every size ideology. However in my opinion and based on my experience I think women are more in this "movement" because, women traditionally been valued by society based on our looks. My own family has told me that my value is based on the kind of man I attract. If I attract a good looking man with a good career then I have more value than a woman who attracts an average guy with a blue collar job. This was pounded into me from birth pretty much. I remember my sister was put in a pageant and when I was eligible 2 years later my grandma said "Oh, honey you have to be pretty in one of those." I was like 4 or 5. So, I was already being told I was ugly and valueless at that age. And having little self worth I emotionally ate and ended up obese. And unfortunately that idea was reinforced all through my life by peers. It has taken me until my 20s for me to actually value myself, my life, and my body enough to try to lose the weight and get healthy. I still get what the fat acceptance would call "fat shaming" and yeah it hurts especially when I am working hard to lose weight and have actually been successful lately. And my self-esteem takes a blow but, I repeat my mantra and move on. But, I never remember fat guys in school getting bullied. Primarily because, they were athletes actually. Think football players who work out but, can sit and eat an extra large pizza to themselves. I think in some ways it has always been more acceptable for men to be fat than women. So I think that's where the gender divide comes in. Just a thought.

While I agree with that statement, I believe society overlooks the fact men feel exactly the same way. Difference is they don't address the issue publically like women do and just either accept their bodies or lose the weight. I would like more light to be shined on this subject. However this doesn't take away that women have this issue in society. Just a thought.

According to the FA movement, your being skinny and fit is problematic, a trigger to others, depriving yourself to satisfy The Patriarchy and Diet Culture, so clearly it's better to gorge yourself until you're sick and immobile

I appreciate that you mentioned that there are some people that have had a medical issue that was not caused by something we did but has had a negative impact on our weight. I have always been healthy and never had a problem with weight until 2012 when I had my first of 3 abdominal surgeries. The first to remove my uterus that was being engulfed by a fibroid (no cause of my own) the second surgery that was 368 days later to remove both ovaries due to cysts (no cause of my own). At which time they discovered I had developed severe abdominal adhesions to the extent that the surgery was stopped and a specialist was called in and they had to cut through the adhesions (also discovering I had JUST developed a bowel obstruction. Which can cause death if it were to rupture). Two years after that in 2015 I had my third abdominal surgery (lysis of adhesions) to remove the adhesions once again. The result of having been cut hip to hip 3 times and the aftermath of it (abdominal adhesions for life that also cause sever pain constantly as well as issues with digestion since my upper and lower colon is frozen in a mass of scar tissue). Three abdominal surgeries that caused major trauma has left me dealing with weight issues and constant pain (there is no cure for adhesions). BUT I am finally to a point where the pain is manageable and I’m trying really hard to drop the weight gained after all of the above. I do not think you can “judge a book by its cover” because anyone who looks at me today would probably think I’m lazy and my weight is all my own fault when in fact my body doesn’t digest food properly (leafy greens are the worst on a frozen colon), I was unable to exercise for a very long time due to healing from surgery after surgery, and even now exercise at times causes a lot of pain and discomfort because the adhesions pull on my organs and inner wall of my abdomen.
All that said, it makes me so mad when people do this whole fat acceptance crap. My weight gain has changed my life and not for the better! I’m exhausted all the time. My back & knees hurt from the weight. I get out of breath just climbing stairs. Do I think we need to have compassion for those whose weight was caused by a medical issue, yes. Do I think those who are overweight because of a medical issue need support and guidance to help them lose weight, yes. Do I think we should judge someone for being overweight without knowing their story, no.
I think obesity is a mental health issue for most people.
I am slowly losing the weight. It is a daily struggle just to push through the constant pain and workout. But I know if I don’t push myself I’ll succumb to a life of health issues caused by my weight. I think we have become a nation of acceptance when we need to be a nation of common sense and knowledge instead.
Remember the next time you see a fat person in a gym, you don’t know their story so have compassion for them, they are trying to get their life back through hard work and sometimes at the cost of being in actual physical pain at the gym. At least they are trying.

The more I lose weight (I’ve lost 50 pounds so far) the more I get angry about these fat acceptance folks, especially because I was one of them. I sure had the right to be 250 fucking pounds at 5’2” at the age of 17 and that also gave me the right to struggle getting off a fucking couch! I’m not even slim I’m still 190 but I’m genuinely amazed by the HUGE difference in just how easy it is for me to do the simplest shit that I shouldn’t have had a problem doing as a TEENAGER. No one is trying to say we should treat them differently because they’re fat. If I went to my doctor and he was like “You’re at risk for diabetes, you should lose some weight” I’m going to go lose some fucking weight (which I did) because they’re a fucking doctor and know what they’re talking about.
TL;DR This movement is cancer. Because there’s not enough movement!

My knee pain started when I was 13!! It's painful. My doctor said what I need more than medicine is daily exercise and maintaining a normal weight, and proper nutrition with calcium, vitamins etc. I was not even obese, just needed a healthy diet and to move more.I've changed my diet, I don't need calcium sup now. Heathy food and active live is really important, for every people.
