- In this video you can join me for a wild camp on Kinder Scout. After a bit of difficulty finding water, I ended up pitched near Kinder Downfall. I was using my DD Superlight Tarp as part of my compact one or two night wild camping setup in my Osprey Stratos 36 backpack.

Believe me Des, the older you get the harder it gets and if you leave it for to long in between trips, you lose the fitness that you gained from the last one, So therefore you have to keep at it, that is if you want to stay on top of it. I have done 44 tramps (hikes) so far this year and I'm 74 have been in the mountains for over 50 years and still enjoy it. An old trick that we use over here if there is a lack of water is to wrap a T- shirt around your ankle and walk through the long grass in the early morning dew. When wet wring it out into your billy and boil .Have done this many a time when up on the tops, it's a life saver. all the best for your future walks. Cheers from NZ
That's great going at 74! You're absolutely right, it gets harder and harder to regain lost fitness. I have a recurring back problem, and sometimes I can do very little to remain fit. Hopefully a couple more backpacking trips should see me right again!
I love the T-shirt trick👍 I'll remember that one! In the area I camped, water is usually available a little lower down, as the streams reappear from the very porous rock. So it wouldn't have been a real problem.

Hi Dan. I do enjoy the van camping and day hikes, but it was really great to be able to get out for an overnighter with the pack again! I just need to work on upping those fitness levels now!👍😁

Even if I didn't look at the title seeing that train shot you just know you were locked and loaded for a camp somewhere. This put a smile on my face for sure You seemed really chilled and when that sun was setting there was a moment of peace and lovely colours..Well worth the 11 miles. A little worrying when you couldn't find water ..but you certainly found it the day after in that rain lol. I bet your glad you packed the waterproofs. It was a very chilled out and peaceful evening, once I'd got set up👍 I'm amazed Kinder ever runs out of water...always seems to be plenty coming out of the sky when I'm there! 😂 Anyway, it was a treat to be out wild camping again whatever the weather. Just need to get my fitness level up again!

Enjoyed that Des it brought back lovely memories of cycling the Sett Valley Trail & visiting Hayfield (Bri was a big Dad's Army fan and we visited Arthur Lowe's house/birthplace). What an asbolute get away from it all camp location you found, there was no way that cloud was lifting the following morning was there! 😆. Thanks for sharing, Sue.

Funnily enough, I was back at Hayfield C&CC with a mate for a few days this week. Probably mine and Maria's favourite site, as it's so easy as a quick getaway for us. Loads of great walks from there... and have paid homage to Mr. Lowe ourselves there previously 👍🙂

It's a great place to camp....feels like another world! There's usually a lot more water going over Kinder Downfall, but it's been so dry here recently! We need a lot more of that rain I woke up to 😁

Nice spot for a camp there Des. A typical Kinder Scout camp with a nice walk up and a wet morning! It’s definitely very dry in the Peaks at the moment. Finding running water will be even more of a challenge at the moment due to this heatwave!

Hard to believe it was still light after 9:00p… would have been lovely to have a clear sunset. Too bad about the forecast and the wind and rain. Hi Stu. I bet you're right....another dry week since then, so I reckon the last bit of flow on the River Kinder will be gone by now. I was walking a bit lower down last week and noticed a reasonable flow on one of the streams off Kinder Low End. Was great to be back out wild camping, even with a rather wet morning!👍😁
Another wonderful trip Des ! The area is otherworldly up there. Juts a unique place to camp ! I feel for you on the cardio ! That was a good climb right out of the gate. Nice tarp tent set up also - super compact. Still looked beautiful in the rain day 2 - best to you !

I hope your back is better ! I haven’t been on trail in quite a while and I know my conditioning is nowhere where it should be. Glad to see you out there camping again. We are over inundated w forest hikes here in the states and particularly on the east coast - so when I see the landscapes you are in it really looks different ! Great footage. I don’t know if I could take that wind blowing in though ! Best to you .

We like hiking but I don't relish the uphill stuff. Good on ya for getting out tent camping in the rain,,, I'm afraid I've gotten soft and just don't do that any longer LOL!!

Great to see you back out wild camping Des and the industrial heritage at the start of your walk looked interesting, Ive never been around there. The drizzly night was unexpected as I thought it was never going to rain ever again 🤣
Pleased to hear your back is better, alas my poor leg and knee is not brilliant but I did manage 14 miles with a full pack on the flat yesterday. Tempted to camp local Tommorow so I can enjoy the fullish moon.

Des you said this wasn't the best wild video but I loved it , one of my favourites of yours . I loved the walk up past the Waterfall and seeing the beautiful church and was curious as I think you said your walking poles held up the tent ? So is this a thing that people do or just you ? That's genius to save space and weight . We have never wild camped before because I like to cap more luxuriously ! It's horrible packing up in the rain though, it happened to us last week out of the blue. Loved seeing your camp set up . Great video Des . Loved this one :) ~ Anna

Yes, there are quite a number of small walking pole tents you can get these days. Really light weight for backpacking! Mine uses two poles, but you can get some tents that only need a single pole. That rain always seems to show up when you're packing away, doesn't it? 😂 Oh well, all part of the fun!

Hi Simon. This one is a bit more of a fiddle than some of the single pole ones, but you don't have an internal pole getting in the way. It's a nice 2 to 3 ish season tent👍 River Kinder was only just flowing, so not ideal really. I noticed this week (after no more rain) that the stream flowing down into Oaken Clough (near Edale Cross) still had a decent flow, so will bear that in mind for future👍

Well done i'm of a similar age to you but i have a few mobility issues ..I have bought myself an E-bike and a trailer so i can travel easy and take more equipment with me i.e. a power bank and the ability to charge it with a solar panel for the E bike battery's..... I will be heading out into the vail of Clwyd this autumn for a few days test camping.....So wish me well as i wish you all the best in your adventures....
