    A great addition to any DM's collection, and something that will see lots of game play. I still prefer my square pillars but these are nice to have to change things up once in a while.

    I really need to get me one of those hot foam cutter tables. It saves so much time.
    In the past, I've cut circles of foam using 1" brass tubing that I filed down a little on one end to give it more of a cutting edge. Press down, twist, and voila--you got a circle. It works surprisingly well if you're on a budget, or just happen to have some brass tubing lying around. It's also great for consistency.

    I bet some 3/4" PVC pipe would be a good substitute for the round foam if you don't have a hot wire cutter and jig. (3/4" is the inside diameter, so the outer diameter is a bit larger than this). Some washers glued in the bottom could help add weight, and PVC is super easy to cut, so you can make then whatever length you want pretty easily. (You might need to lightly sand the PVC to make sure the glue sticks).
    I kind of wonder how it would turn out with PVC wrapped in thinner, adhesive-backed foam. You could engrave the brick pattern on before you wrap it, and hit it quickly with a heat gun after to open it up. that could be a quick solution, although it might not look as detailed.

    The diameter isn't the important number is it? I mean, it's the radius you set the Proxxon to isn't it (5/8")? I know I'm a bit late with this but I just got around to start building these pillars. Also, for the top and bottom it looks like they are slightly larger. Is that true?

    • @phalanx1234
      @phalanx1234 Před 5 lety

      You got two options, really: airbrushing matte varnish, or hand-brushing the matte varnish on. The former is better as you get even coats all over, but not everyone has space for an airbrush so doing it by hand is usually fine.
      If you're the gambling sort, you can use a rattlecan outside and quickly bring it inside so that it doesn't ruin the clear coat. I'd recommend that if you do this, bring it into your bathroom and turn the fan on so that it'll have somewhere for the smell to ventilate.

      You probably don't need this anymore - it's been a year - but for anyone else with this same question, like me, I'd honestly try what he suggested in the beginning of the video and just do the thing he did in his square pillars video, but with circular layers instead. It seems like it'd work out really well! Me and my trusty x-acto are gonna try that sometime in the next few days, probably. We'll see how it goes!

      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  Před 5 lety +1

      Nah, the more videos there are on the same projects the better. This way people can try what they find most appealing.
      If I had planned this better (it was an impromptu build) I probably would have used some wood dowels for the substrate.

    • @LandvaettrsLair
      @LandvaettrsLair Před 5 lety

      @@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Same line of thoughts here. Wood dowels are also good to make small sized pillars by themselves, the grooves make them look a lot like greek columns! Only need to glue in small Caps of sorts as base and capital and you got yourself a nice small collumn!

  • @sgt-slag
    @sgt-slag Před 5 lety +1

    Two things to consider: 1) You over-thought it -- just pick a cylinder diameter, and apply bricks until you reach the end, inserting custom sized bricks, as needed, to fill in the end gaps; 2) Use empty pill bottles, by cutting off the threaded tops, then Hot Glue them together, end-to-end, using your beveled foam circles as toppers, and bases, skipping the calculations, and just apply bricks until you get close, then insert cut-off bricks as needed to fill in the small remaining gaps. The calculations are too much work, too fiddly, and they require too much precision -- you likely won't make them work, anyway, due to brick length variations... Just glue the bricks on, and cut to size needed, at the end. Otherwise, great video, and inspiration. Cheers!

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial

      Because I have more foam than I know what to do with....it’s very cheap and often free. This just used scraps.
      Another item like wood dowel or plastic pipe would be a good alternative. I’d never use a toilet paper roll it would get crushed so easily.

    I got to say I don't like the background music one bit. With such streamers and content creators, having background music takes away some of the 'instructional' aspect of your craft, and makes it hard to focus on what you are saying. That's the whole point, is to see and hear how you get it done. Not everything needs music. I would much rather just hear you walk and talk us through it. It's more relatable that way.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  Před 5 lety +2

      I understand that some people have a problem with music in things (there are always a few). Overall music is proven to be beneficial to any form of media, there is a reason it’s often there. At the end of the day I enjoy the inclusion of music and find it improves the editing and pacing so it is here to stay. Thanks for watching anyway.
