    Just grabbed an old Hall Class on eBay & as I sub to your channel I was really pleased to find you had made this guide as I will need to give it a service . 90% of the layout & stock is old stuff from eBay as it has been made for my 5 year old grandson. I wanted something he could play with & survive being attacked by dinosaurs etc, not just look at. It is important that the layout is fun for both of us, not something to be precious about. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      I think that’s what manufacturers are missing out on, models to be used and enjoyed by all ages, i often get second hand locomotives and rolling stock, as both me and my 11 yr old boy play trains, i dont want to spend 200+ on a single loco that I’m to frightened to take out the box. Most of my locomotives are from the 70s to early 2000s and easy and cheap to repair, and parts are usually pretty cheap to replace on peters spares,

    Great video Sam. Love the matter of fact way you disassemble and reassemble these models.What I learned is it really makes sense to have a good suite of tools around just makes it so much easier. Your very good with the soldering iron. I have one but hate using it in case I damage something!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 8 lety +1

      +Russell Benton Thanks mate - I've always enjoyed disassembling locos... just as long as I can get them back together again! Thanks for the compliment on the soldering hehe, though I'm sure there's plenty who are much more impressive than me! But yeah, there is always the worry of damaging things with it - I keep the temperature high, which means that you can break contact quickly without causing unnecessary damage!
      Cheers,
      Sam :)

  • @AaronOxfordExmouth1989

    Incredibly useful. I have a triang hymek to restore, one of the old spider assembly motors, and a lot of what you have done on this particular video, can transfer over. Really enjoy these kind of videos, because everyone services things differently, I've been servicing locomotives for many years, yet I still learn from them. I try N gauge, now that is a whole different ballgame! Keep up the good work.

I had a great time taking the loco apart as per your video ...I learned a great deal...never had the nerve to remove/take apart a motor before ... great fun, and good to see it spinning around like a new one (it was dead to begin with) after cleaning it all up ... was great until I put it back in the chassis ... then it stops dead ... reckon that must be wierd ... runs fine but it only has to be held against the chassis and it stops dead ... hey ho

      +Sam'sTrains Hi Sam , wonder if you could help me with a query I have . New DMU I have derails on a couple of my points and thought it was a point problem until I saw a video on same being caused by the wheels too far apart . I do not have a wheel guide so just moved the wheels closer on the offending bogie just a little and problem solved . Would you or John at Chambs 123 know the correct distance between wheels or if there is such an item as a wheel gauge guide . .......Peter .

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 8 lety

      +Peter Shaw Hi Peter, thanks for the message! You're right, a lot of de-railments do happen as a result of poor gauging - especially on Hornby locos! Me and John tend to gauge locos by eye, although I'm sure there are devices for gauging! If you're able to remove the wheels, you want to put each set on a point, and you want the wheels far enough apart so that they don't drop down between the rails on the point (Hornby points have a tiny section where the track is cut away slightly) You also want them close enough together to have a reasonable amount of left/right movement on the track too.
      It sounds like you've got the right idea though, I tend just to use trial and error! :)
      Cheers mate,
      Sam :)

    I believe you made a mistake in that assumption about the motor, the proper way to tell what type of motor it is is by the felt lubricating pads, if it has none, it's an X.03, if it has one, it's an X.03.5 and if it has two, it's an X.04, still a great video!

There is power now but when I try to run it it dosent sound great and I see sparks coming from where the brushes are. Would you, Sam , or anyone know what the problem is? I am knew to the hobby and this is my first restoration project

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey! Good choice converting back to DC - these aren't good on DCC at all! The sparks could be a number of things - is the suppression capacitor missing? Does the magnet feel weak? Can you measure the resistance of each coil to see whether they're in good shape? The sparks can indicate high current draw, which suggests some kind of motor fault. Is the wheelset free to turn without the motor?
      Good luck!! :D

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  Před 3 lety

      Hey Rory - the motor shouldn't be burned out unless it's the motor windings themselves that are shorted - the motor should be safe if it was the pickups doing the shorting - you just need to correct the issue before it'll work again. Have you tried a full stripdown and service? Make sure the pickups/wires aren't contacting the metal chassis!
