As a 15 year old high school track sprinter watching the '78 Commonwealth games on the CBC, Alan Wells quickly became my hero. I stopped using blocks because of him (eventually, i went back to them for the 100, because the start is so important in that race, but never used them again for longer races). It worked, too! =)
True, it seemed that the presence of his wife around him was like a comfort blanket for him, if that's the right expression, it certainly worked for him. Cheers.
Even in his peak he couldn't do 100m in close to 10 seconds.i would think that he would struggle to do it in 20 seconds. there was never a blistering time whenever Allan wells won.the record compilers were never needed.
@@paulswords3705 What are you talking about? He ran very close to 10sec on many occasions. If he was running today, he would run under 10sec on many occasions!
George Hunter dont be silly..Wells never won anything when we were sround...Clancy Edwatds would have beaten him..we didnt even have real olympic trials..WTF are you talkimg about?
Lionel Witherspoon I'm talking of the 79 golden sprints, where only Sanford was ahead of him, wells beat the other Americans in the field, finishing 2 overall, also the KP meet in Australia of 80 before Moscow, wells beat Clancey. It's on the web if you have the inclination in looking.
Allan wells absolute legend. No doubt if you were sprinting today as a young man you would have smashed it!

Absolute legend 🙌 👏
My boyhood hero. Thanks Alan.
He was a one off, but for a real insight of Allan Wells check out ...No Easy Way - One Man's Olympics...
Brilliance :)

Great, Mr. Wells
The thing that strikes me about "No Easy Way" is that his wife is there training so hard along side him.
I want to hear about how he trained after finishing full time work in Scottish weather and his garage on his own.
You should read a fantastic book called The Fastest Men on Earth by Neil Duncanson. There is a whole chapter devoted to Alan Wells and how he trained.
@@sarahtullamore1574 Thank you.
Thanks. It is online.
How old is this guy, 60 something? He looks great!!!
can you still do 100 meters in 10 seconds?

Great effort Allan Wells..but be glad ISA sprinters were not there in 1980
Lionel Witherspoon Why should he be glad? They weren't even born.
Scott's Ronnie Carl Lewis..James Sanford..and other couldnt go to the Olympics in 1980
Lionel Witherspoon Lewis was slower than Wells in 80, Sanford was injured.
