Great to hear Bobby talk about these songs. I was in high school when Layla album came out and always thought it was an EC and Duane project. Listening to it now I realize that Bobby’s singing and playing is the heart and soul of the music.
Bobby’s singing blew me away the first time I heard the album... 1972 I think. Great voice, great emotion, and like he said in one of these videos, he made everyone in D&D better because if they didn’t keep up he’a run them over!!!
Claptons work on Keep On Growing is most appreciated by guitar players who have worked these parts up. You know he heard it in his head before he played one note. Genius at work.

As a then 16 year old student guitarist, learning about recording technology, songwriting, arranging, a friend brought the Layla album to my parents house for us to listen hear on my little home stereo system...it was early December 1970. I was stunned to see it was recorded at Criteria in North Miami Beach, just 10 minutes from my parents home, near the Thunderbird Hotel, a mile down Collins Ave from the 461 Ocean Blvd. house... Needless to say, the entire Layla album, song after song, just BLEW MY MIND. I'd been a fan of Eric Clapton during his time in Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney & Bonnie, but I had NEVER heard such intense, emotional guitar playing. Not understanding about open tunings yet, I could not understand how those slide guitar lines on many of those songs were played. Reading the liner notes, I was familiar with all of the 4 Dominoes, but, noted the name... Duane Allman, for the first time....That album, EC's unrequited love for his best friend's woman....its lyrical & vocal intensity from EC and Bobby Whitlock, their split of singing a verse each, then a verse together reminded me at times of Sam & Dave. the arrangements, the drum sounds, especially the toms, solid bass, and those guitars ! OMG, the album as a whole , was like an audio movie, it just spun my head around in such a major way, and has influenced my love of southern influenced blues, roots music ever since....now 50 years later !

Bobby, its always been a point of pride for me as a Floridian that you guys recorded at Criteria for such a monumental work of art. I live about an hour north of the studio and made a quick detour when i was down there once just to take a look at the area (i consider it a pilgrimage lol) and just reflected on how many outstanding recordings were done there, how Miami and Florida more broadly must have influenced them, how hot it must have been in August when you guys were there lol. And I remember jai-alai still being popular here when i was a kid in the late 90's, but sadly its all but disappeared now. There were massive frontons (jai-alai courts) all over and it was a big part of our tourism and sporting industries, but the venerable Basque game is now but another memory of Old Florida which we now miss dearly. I saw you had an exhibit at Art Basel on another more recent video and kicked myself that I didn't know about it til after the fact. It would have been an experience of a lifetime to view your art in person and maybe even get to shake your hand and say thank you for everything you've accomplished. I've been binging these videos at work for the past week and can't get enough. Love you guys! God bless.
It’s great to hear you tell how this song originated. When I was a young bass player, I fell in love with the bass line (the “groove”, right?) and it’s never let me go after all these years. I still think this is my favorite song on the Layla album.

Keep on Growing is as brilliant today as it was the first time I heard it as a teenager. Man what a tight band. Vocals, perfect. Drums, amazing. Guitars, out of this world. I love this song and for some strange reason I'm always waiting for the little organ outro!
Bobby you are the greatest. Your writing and voice on the Layla album makes it so rich and soulful. And of course during Eric’s first solo album. Couldn’t imagine Let it Rain or Layla without your soulful voice echoing those choruses. Wouldn’t possibly sound as full without yours and EC’s call and response. Love you, always did.

Question: I understand that a hole was cut into the top of a Leslie speaker cabinet and that EC’s Champ was laid face down on the cabinet and recorded that way. Ok Bob, So the live d&d album is a pivotal point in my life. I remember feeling that I was part of a special group of people who knew who all the players were And their history
I took great enjoyment in turning people on to the album and sit back and watch as they had their mind blown by the sheer power of this band. In fact I remember that I had to special order the album, and got a call one day that my album was in and I had till the end of day to pick it up or loose it. So I made a few moves to get the money and walked down to the record store to pick it up. The store owner told me that he got a lot of orders for record’s and this one was a pleasure to order. It was really a big deal. A lot of people became aware of the album but I owned it. Love it to this day...

I always thought it was Eric who sang the Whoa....but according to one of the comments, it was you who sang the Whoa! Can you remember?? Apparently, the Whoa was left off the Original release and only included on the 20th anniversary, which is where I first heard the full album. At this point, I’m not sure if these stories are repeated many times or CZcams doesn’t show my “like.” I like each of BW’s videos to make sure I don’t watch it again. But…I think I keep seeing the same videos over and over because YT does not keep the likes. Or, CoCo keeps asking the same questions over and over. Who knows?
We don't do the same thing over and over. Sometimes a subject will be repeated in a different way of someone asks. People don't want to go through the entirety of the videos to find the answer to one question.

The band opened with Layla at the Syracuse concert with Duane. It would have been hard to play Layla with only one guitarist...
Eric never had a problem playing it without, after all it was written on one guitar. At the time no one knew who Duane was and didn't care.
Does Bobby still have the piano from those sessions?
I saw a Tom Dowd tour of Criteria studio and the piano was there in 2000 i think..the Layla piano..Bobbys B3 organ is another good question👍✌️
