It's time for the kids to report on their ancestors. In a glut of an episode, Lisa's slave ancestor potentially being sold by Jessie's ancestor takes a backseat to Zack learning about his Native American roots.

The fact that Jessie wanted to pay reparations to Lisa, who is the daughter of a wealthy doctor, is hilarious.
The daughter of two doctors. The show really just focused on the principle without discussing the reality.
It's an incredibly accurate portrayal of the liberal white woman, and could be dropped in to any show or movie today and not be the least bit out of place. Reality is stranger than fiction here
@@hectorg5809 The apology seems quite warranted but, yes, reparations kind of need more context when it involves the future generations. It's something that should have been done for those who were actually slaves but for future generations it creates issue since it brings up many implications and confusion about who deserves what and who deserves to pay that. It was generally only the rich who owned slaves while most people did not plus what about people who only recently immigrated to the US, what about the current financial situation of people, also taking into account women used to essentially be property without rights as well so it would bring up even more discussion of what people should be owed. It becomes a much more complicated situation.

As an actual Native American, who grew up watching this show on an actual Rez, I _loathed_ this episode. I absolutely adored the show but this is the one rerun I refused to watch. I still have such an aversion to it that I almost didn’t watch this video. I appreciate how much research went into this one, though. You did a great job with it (although this is one video on this channel I will not be rewatching).
I get it. And I commend you for being open-minded enough to give my video a shot despite your misgivings about the subject matter. I think that speaks volumes about your character.

I'm currently working on another Deep Screech Dive and I just can't help but lament the talent that got wasted because Dustin was type cast after SBTB. The dude had some real talent.

She gets a couple shoutouts in the show and I try to highlight them when they pop up.
I'm going to make a minor leap and assume you don't know much about track and field, which is ok and understandable. The Boys and Girls teams compete separately, so "beating Valley" could mean just the Boys win, or the Girls win, or both.
A person can usually score points in a maximum of four events per meet, so you're not way far off in thinking that Zack alone could defeat Valley. However, if he's the star athlete that the show pretends he is, getting first place in four events certainly gives Bayside an advantage when it comes to scoring points overall. There are probably 18-20 events at a local meet like that against Valley.
Bayside can't win because of Zack alone, but it seems like they don't stand a chance without him.
You are correct. I did track in 9th grade, but only as a way to check out girls. The coach very quickly saw my disinterest in the 400 and excused me to regular P.E. (our practices were in the last hour of school).
@@savedbythebelldeepdives The rules could have also been looser back in the 90s, especially for a meet against only one school. Let's say Super Athlete Zack was allowed to score points in maybe eight events then. It's not too far-fetched for one kid to be that much better than everyone else at a single school.
Anyway, there are much better things to enjoy in this episode and analysis than Track and Field. Always enjoy the career synopsis of the bit parts at the end.

I mean, that is certainly one argument. I just wanted to present how both sides can feel like they have a valid stance and we can't get anywhere until we acknowledge that fact instead of just fighting with our default beliefs. But maybe I'm just more diplomatic at heart and hate confrontation.
Eh... to be honest Chief Henry appearing as a ghost at the end didn't bother me. I can see how it can fall into the mystical native American cliche but I can also 100% see the show pulling the exact same thing with some other elderly then dead adult authority figure Zack might have befriended regardless of ethnicity. This is a show that does love it's imagination spots and dream sequences.
I really like your point about the show being rooted in dream sequences, and I think that helps the "mystical Indian dream trope" go down easier. Excellent work, my friend.

I could've swore Domino herself was ethnically black even prior to Deadpool 2. Just that her mutation altered her melanin levels.
Now I'm going to go down a rabbit hole all because of a 30 odd year old episode of Saved By The Bell (oh if I had a nickel for every time I said that).
Domino is one of my favorite characters, and she is definitely white. The patch is a brand that labelled her as a failed mutant experiment. Now, her white mother was artificially inseminated, and - to my knowledge - we never learn the identity of the father, so maybe there is something there. But canonically, Domino is pretty friggin' white.
This was a fun rabbit hole to go down, as I went and double-checked some things from books I haven't read yet.
(If you look at her Greg Land covers, she does kinda resemble Rosario Dawson. NO. COMPLAINTS. THERE. Except for the fact that it's Greg Land. No thank you.)
@@savedbythebelldeepdives Okay. That clarifies that pretty conclusively. Admittedly I don't have many issues of X-Force related titles in my collection, so beyond her being a capable second in command for Cable with luck powers, I don't know THAT much about the character. I'm not even sure where I picked that.
I wasn't sure if it was a Blink situation where it wasn't entirely spelled out at first and more was added in later in the backstory as the character progressed.
I went down the rabbit hole last night and couldn't really find anything backing Domino being black up aside from her Deadpool 2 appearance. I could've sworn I heard that many years before Deadpool 2 even came out. I guess I got Mandela Effected.
....Or I'm from the Good Morning Miss Bliss continuity.
I went through a similar rabbit hole because I couldn't be certain - like you said - that some later back story hadn't been filled in.
That said, Zazie Beetz was a fantastic looking Domino.

I'm glad you mentioned Dehl Berti on Paradise. That show was awesome! The premise was like proto-Dr. Quinn. But instead of a doctor lady friend of the family taking in a bunch of kids, it was an outlaw gunslinger uncle. Sweet!

The writer for the episode was Jewish, so I'm 1000% sure he was aware that Dustin Diamond was also Jewish. They made him Italian to avoid anti-sematic opinions of the character. Many people in Hollywood worked under stage names for that reason. I mean after all, if the public found out exactly how many Jews were in show business, they may begin to notice and question why.

I would’ve like to see Lisa get in touch with being Black by the show adding more Black characters and how she may have interacted with them. Being Black wasnt an issue in the show which didn’t make much sense to me, especially since there were many examples on NBC at the time (Cosby Show, 227, Amen, A Different World, Fresh Prince)
They should’ve addressed it like what they did with Slater in the college years. But to your point this didn’t want to make white America uncomfortable at the time and it’s easier to be color blind. I think the producers thought that having a Black character in a majority white cast and her being “accepted” by them was enough.
Sometimes baby steps are still far too short when hoping for change. I've mentioned in other videos that we often have to resort to extremes just to move the needle a little, but SBTB absolutely took the safe route. Now, I don't think we can necessarily blame them for avoiding hot button issues in a fun show for kids with a wacky premise, but the flaw in this becomes apparent when SBTB tries to frame deeper plot points to seem more relevant.
Hopefully one day we'll have the recipe for adequate representation in the media, and not just in the niche stuff.
I agreed wasn't enough blackness but look at the overall color of the show. But we had a good black show. But I did like Lisa's character the main reason why I watched the show.
I can't relate to people that don't look like me. I need more representation so i can feel comfortable. Stfu dude.

Funny Lisa even said it in an episode Belding sitting on the floor eating Pizza in Screech or Zacks room and Lisa saying too weird LOL! This wouldn't be done on tv today!🍕🏫📚🔔
There is obviously a lot to unpack in this episode but I can never get past the opening premise wherein a significant portion of Bayside gives any amount of crap about a single race in a track meet.

I guess we give the show points for attempting to address sensitive subjects, but this is so heavy-handed and on-the-nose that it almost comes off as parody. I don't know that Saved By the Bell is the vehicle for this kind of commentary.
Agreed. I know the kids were all about the issues with meat on them, but it's a fine line in representing those issues properly. This is one rare instance where I think Zack Morris is Trash had the right, cynical approach to the episode.
Soul Train was a dance show and the Underground Railroad I feel deserved much respect than that. From the writers on the show. Smh.
Some of us whites sure do love speaking for black people in the media...
I'd argue that SOUL TRAIN is an important part of black American culture that also deserves respect. History didn't end with emancipation.

Instead of inserting in this track meet stuff for why Zack shouldn't be all sad and stuff and instead of making Zack having some native american in him, I agree with the narrator, why not make Zack's character Indonesian or a race not commonly focused on in america that should be, pacific islander, hawaiian.
Have the research for the project be unexpected by his friends and the person he befriended to learn more about that history dies and he shuts down and is all mopey, but his friends aren't worried because track meet, but because Zack has never been that sad before. They see how it's affecting him because for him he's never known someone of that race because his parents never showed him that side of their families.
Oh who am I kidding, this was the 90s and a show like this wasn't the best at having 'cool dude' main character dropping his facade without it being melodrama times 10.
Right? It's a fun show for kids with a wacky premise! This was just such an odd subject to try and tackle with their time and subject restraints.
