She always rearranges the songs she performs; she doesn't copy the original song and the singer. This is my fave performance and I've heard it hundreds of times. It still gives me goosebumps. It may sound awkward at first but you'll be fascinated as you hear it more and more.
We should all listen to more of this music so we appreciate our parents and family who inspires us. She is a musical genius ! The way she arranges song puts more meaning to the original and makes it much more dramatic. I usually don't like covers because many singers put too much thoughtless BS into original ( especially US national anthem ) that it sounds disturbing to hear sometimes. Based solely on vocal ability and technique, she is considered among the very best in the world right now by almost everyone who has seen her performances, especially her upper register which is second to none. While it is a shame that she is not known much, outside enthusiasts and niche music circles, due to her prior focus being solely on gospel music, but her determination to remain true to herself, and her story, has earned her a small but strong following, moreso over here in youtube
