A Deep-Dive of Every Boss In Shinobi III - Boss Analysis # 70

  • The seventieth episode of Boss Analysis.
Shinobi III is the awesome sequel to the classic Revenge of Shinobi on the Genesis or Mega Drive. Back in episode 33, I fought each of the bosses of Revenge of Shinobi under the most difficult circumstances, and now it's the sequel turn to get the same treatment and further my ninja training.
Rather than giving into weaknesses and accepting all the help the game gives me, though, I've decided to do the exact opposite to answer the question I had: Is it possible to beat each of the eight bosses with the bare minimum? This means...
    - No kunai/shurikens
    - No special Jitsu
    - No POW upgrade
All Joe Musashi has at his disposal to overcome his deadliest foes is a short-range knife, a kick... and a katana when he dash attacks? I believe that no boss from any game should become unbeatable if you go up against them in the worst possible situation and was curious to see if this game didn't fall into the same trap as my much-hated Buebeam Trap from Mega Man 2.

With many of the bosses resembling ones from Revenge of Shinobi, I was thinking to myself "There's no way Sega's going to bring back one of the dubious license bosses." the whole time, until I saw MechaGodzilla.

I saw an analysis of Mortal Kombat 2's AI and how it works on a programmatic level. After a certain point, the AI becomes literally impossible to beat without cheating, as it begins perfectly reacting to everything you do. Until you get a game over and continue, at which point it gets dialed back a bit before slowly ramping up.
Funny how we look back fondly at these old games when they were abusing cheap difficulty and psychological tricks to keep people putting quarters in the machines.

There are still ways to get around the button reading AI in MK2 by exploiting certain moves or strategies that break the AI. It ends up turning every fight into almost a puzzle boss of sorts.

Also fun fact whois, the 3ds release of this game actually does have a version of the controlls that splits up every button into doing something it binds the melee attack and the shooting attack to 2 different buttons and it labels this mode "EXPERT SHINOBI"... this is also one of the few sega rereleases that offers a harder mode instead of an easier mode !

Awesome breakdown of this badass game! I'm glad I beat this once already so when I go back to it now, I can dip out when it starts getting too tough. Those last few stages aren't messing around!
Also, I like how silly it is to input the code for the 6-button controller. You know shits getting serious when you see someone busting out 2 controllers haha!
Blocking and using the sword on command makes this game a hell of a lot easier on the brain. Blocking is especially useful for the gun guys, I find.
Still, I use the dash attack for a lot of this game. Like the first boss in the cave. You can dash right thru the first part of his wave attack, doing damage in the process. Then you simply jump over it as it returns. Much simpler in my eyes. My favorite use of it is for Mecha Godzilla, jumping from hand to hand as you showed in the video. So satisfying!
Anyways, props for taking all these guys head on the hard way. I'll admit I use ninpo quite often to skip a few of these fights, so it's cool to see someone really go at em! Cheers!

5:04 Shucks, you remind me of me and the back-dash in Castlevania games. I never use it, and instead just attack projectiles or jump away to avoid attacks. The only exception that comes to mind is Julius' mode in Aria of Sorrow, because phasing through enemies harmlessly with Omnia Vanitas is too good. It's like the Alucard Sword teleport-slash in Symphony of the Night, almost. Similar kind of fun for me.

1:03:24, I think I got it, if a shadow is below the other one, it’s the real one, if they are different rows in different collumns and one is not in the top right corner, this is also true, if someone is in the top right corner, without the other being underneath them, then they are the real one, while if they are on the same row, it’s probably random… unless if it’s changes how’s in front when you hit them, my best guess, is probably so you can dodge the Kunai.

I REALLY love this game, despite the fact that 5-1 can make the game automatically reset if there's too much going on. The game also has zips that aren't too hard to perform (some of them are hard, and there's one in 6-2 that either lets you skip to 6-3 or just outright kills you).
Also, I have a quick question: Who requested this? (I might just have a bad memory, but I dunno)
Edit: The dash attack does the same amount of damage to enemies/bosses as a POW upgraded kunai (range) or katana (up-close), so it's three times as powerful as a regular attack. Also, there was originally meant to be a 5th Ninjutsu called Hakuriu (Ice), but it's only seen in the 11/11/1992 (November 11th, 1992) prototype, and was scrapped at the time of the early 1993 prototype (much more similar to the final, but still has plenty of differences).

Ironically, the block makes Mr. Samurai Miniboss a complete joke! All you have to do is guard low when you're close to him (but not TOO close!) to make the shockwave disappear, then go up to him (preferably with a dashing slash), and then just keep slashing him! Because his damage animation is a bit long and his hitbox DOESN'T go away, it's possible to destroy him in only seconds!
    ^-^

hey, you finally got around to doing this game too! your revenge of shinobi knife-only run actually inspired me to do both that game and this shurikenless around two years ago, and most of the strategies i used are similar to yours. some extra thoughts on the video:
    - there's a secret 6-button control scheme you can activate by inputting a series of actions at the options screen which allows you to use the knife attack without needing to deplete all your kunais. it sounds like it'd save you a lot of trouble so it's a shame you didn't know, although i certainly don't blame you for it
    - on that note, it looks like playing the game shurikenless was actually somewhat intended as a special challenge by the devs, since not using shurikens for an entire stage nets you the "shinobi" bonus at the end of the stage. of course, doing that with the default control scheme is probably a supermassive pain in the ass, so the game was probably intended to use the 6-button control scheme, but it's the thought that counts, right?
    - while you can still get hit by projectiles during the first bit of the dash attack while musashi does his little hop, i'm pretty sure the slash part of the attack actually renders you 100% invincible (aside from falling into a pit), but all of the use cases for that for bosses you made use of so it's kinda whatever
    - before i tried doing the game on expert i played on normal so i could familiarize myself with the game. as far as i know, other than the health and lives the only change is that the hydra takes longer to raise his hand on lower difficulties. i also only realized you could block after finishing the game once and seeing one of the demos use it. probably a gargantuan design gaffe rather than a gargantuan gaming gaffe if you ask me
    - i know this is a boss analysis rather than a full game analysis, but there is one specific situation which i'm pretty sure makes this game 100% impossible to finish with your stipulations; one of the sections of stage 5-2 makes use of bombs you can blow up to destroy platforms and open up new paths, and there's one box with an explosive blocking the door to the next section that you can't reach without either throwing a kunai or using a damaging jutsu like kairyu. it's a real shame too, because it makes it impossible to get the secret bonus in this stage as you either need to forgo the no jutsu bonus or the shinobi bonus
    - as for wall jumping, there's a neat trick you can do to extend your wall jump infinitely on one wall: ordinarily you need to wait a bit after jumping off a wall to be able to turn in the other direction, which makes it difficult to gain height, but by timing your double jumps correctly you can gain a little bit of height every time and ascend as high as you want... or at least, that's what i did before i learned that doing an attack bypasses that cooldown entirely and lets you do it much quicker and safer. very useful for that nasty tall room in 6-2 and some sections of 7-2 if you fall down or at the shrinking walls right before the final boss.
    - and finally, goddamn, congratulations on finding that exploit for the final boss. i fought him legit (and even then could only beat him with ikazuchi) and it took me literal WEEKS of grinding against him until i finally gave in and looked up a video of the fight online which made me realize how important blocking actually is during that fight. even then it still took me a couple attempts until i finally managed to bring him down. it's a super fun fight even though it's so hard and i'd recommend you try to beat him legit one day, even if you need to use save states for it.
