    There goes the heat treatment on the bearing. Your better off putting the pinion gear in the freezer. Would you let this guy work on your car with a hammer...?

    You skipped a very important step the shimming of the pinion how did you do that how did you come up with the proper shim

    The blue and brown color of the bearing at 13:34 in the video indicate that the bearing was overheated and will damage the bearings. I didn't notice an oil slinger when installing the front pinion bearing and seal. How did you measure pinion bearing preload? The pattern wasn't too readable.

    For the love of god, step away from the rear end. Just a few things I saw while I fast forwarded. It's a crush sleeve not bearing. You torched the shit out of that bearing and then ran water over it, hahaha, it's gone. How many dam shims did you put under the pinion bearing, the whole pack. Then you beat the crap out of the seal and put the side bearing caps in 180 degrees out.

      I swear,some of these people making videos on how to fix things on your vehicle are either ignorant or are purposely doing it the wrong way. There's no way I'd use this axle and expect it to last for a long time. The wear pattern on the ring gear didn't look quite right. I wait for the paint to at least dry so it will give you a definitive pattern. And the bearing was heated way too hot.

  • @erichrock2563
    @erichrock2563 Před 6 lety +15

    You should of left the pinion bearing cool on it's own. When you cool rapidly with cold or hot water you create stress. Stress will eventually wear out the bearing. I worked in heat treating once upon a time.
    But it is your project not mine.

    • @lskiller1903
      @lskiller1903 Před 5 lety +1

      And he should never heat the bearing with a torch 200° to 250° max.!!

    • @Thundarr995
      @Thundarr995 Před 4 lety

      Last one I did,I went to the Goodwill and bought a smaller old cooking pot. Then I put some gear oil in it and heated it up on the pot burner on my gas grill. I heated it up till it was bubbling but not burning. I used a meat thermometer it said it was about 219F. I put the bearing in there for about 5 min. It dropped right on the pinion. I let it cool on its own. I didn't want to do it inside because of the oil smoke. That shit really stinks. It worked on the carrier also. 1 bearing on the carrier didn't go all the way,but it was close so I hammered it the rest of the way with a ball joint press adapter.

    The pinion preload was too tight. I think it's sposta only be about 12-20 in/lbs.

    Fyi...you put the carrier bearing caps on wrong ..ear goes toward the axel tube...just for starters ..then there's the other 4711 other ..well , we will call em little things that make this build a guaranteed failure,,,..but we learn from our mistakes,..God knows I've made mine over 35 + years of turning wrenches...& slinging a couple too...
    But you're going to be learning alot in the near future !......Alot!

    it does hurt the bearing meathead you are playing with the tempering of the bearing , which will weaken the hardness

    • @shawnshannon3107
      @shawnshannon3107 Před 4 lety

      Mr.6 you can absolutely use an impact, you just need an inch pound dial torque wrench to measure the preload on the pinion beatings and make sure you dont over tighten it.

    I am a retired GM Master tech, Don't use this video to rebuild a rear end. Really, hammer in the pinion seal and hammer pinion bearing is always a NO-NO. Pinion bearing preload is not set by feel but with special tools. Did not cover pinion depth set-up. Video should be banned from You tube!

    So you didn't explain much in detail. how to shim correctly and what to look for. What about how to set the back lash on the ring and pinion?? Sorry but not that informitive. Pretty lame

    • @GranadaBashlav
      @GranadaBashlav Před 6 lety +1

      He must have measured the shims that where already on there since he is using the same carrier and the same pinion size. Pretty common to reuse the same size shims. then paint and test from there.

    • @GranadaBashlav
      @GranadaBashlav Před 6 lety +1

      but then again, he did not assemble the pinion without the crush bearing first. He must be winging it lol.
