  • In this first video on “practicing the masters”, I will use the Elgar concerto to give you tips on how to make gestures that bring out the music you have in mind. I call them “sound gestures”.
I will introduce the terms “square” (holding back) and “round” (fluent / connecting) gestures.
If you want tips on different passages or need a full explanation, please leave a comment below or Subscribe to my website. I'll be happy to hear from you!!

This is one piece I am determined to learn. I love your approach, it resonates with me using the full body to express the emotion in the music. Now, if I can just master the intonation!

It's a holistic approach, rather than perfect technical ability only

As a professional dancer now learning cello, this lesson about expression through motion is very enlightening ❤

I’m thinking of taking up the ‘cello! Later in life - I’m 52! But I spent my early years playing the tenor viol with a Renaissance music group, so I have an immediate in. There are a few differences - the viol has frets and a flat back. Different scroll, too! But you are an amazing cellist! I thought Jacqueline Dupré had Elgar in the bag, to be honest! But I find I’m preferring your version of it! Happy laying and wish me luck! At least I won’t have to read the tenor clef any more! 😅

Decades ago, this was one of the works that marked my entrance into the world of Classical Music, when the documentary Remembrando Jacqueline had recently come out. Congratulations on the excellent video Adrian, a beautiful contribution to studies that transcend the instrument. Follow my Like in the video. Fraternal hug here from Brazil, Minas Gerais.👋👋👋🌞

... First of all, my apologies, once I couldn't see your name so as to I start my comment as it should be started.
Really, the big problem on teaching this kind of matters isn't the technical aspect but the way how making people to understand the PRINCIPLES -technical improvement comes with the practice.
So, I must to thank you for your way of teaching, when it also is useful for beginners.
