I competed in UniSlam 2020 as a part of the University of Birmingham Team and it was the Best weekend of my life. So much love to the organisers, the other universities and my beautiful team and coach.

in my first ever forensics lecture,
someone asked our professor
what’s the worst crime scene you’ve ever attended?
and she changed.
from fresher ready smiles.
something dark settled in her eyes
and she was miles away.
[incredulous laugh]
never ask me that.
the stories i can tell you will be all you can see when you try to sleep.
i still dream about the worst scenes.
it reminded me of how it feels when
someone asks why i dont drink.
[laugh]
You probably don’t want to know
I say at pres,
more awkward than angry,
arms sticky from the bar in front of me
the scenes ive seen, though without
blood spatter aren’t something
to natter about over a pint.
they laugh too, not
knowing why the sound is escaping
their drink stained lips, thinking
they can handle a childhood’s worth
of gin.
as i order another pint of water.
i am my fathers first daughter
but i come second to whatever
you’re sipping -
but
never ask an alcoholic’s daughter
why she doesn’t drink.
Because, you don’t want to know
How glass bottles land in bins
With all the grace of a brick
Thrown through a church window.
how dinner made by a drunk
doesn’t taste different but the
conversation over the table
leaves an unholy taste in your mouth.
How this addiction plays tricks on
your mind.
i could’ve sworn the bottle in the
fridge was full this morning.
and you’ve worn that shirt
three days in a row.
but how would i know
when they all roll into one
we’ve already had this conversation
twice over coffee you cant keep
in the mug because your
shakes are so bad. temptation
quivering
like a preachers hand held over you
this will make you feel better
this Will make you feel better
this will make you feel better
if only.
the bottom of the glass probably
doesnt feel so lonely when
you’ve been there long enough
I am my father’s first daughter
But i came second to whatever he was sipping.
But i wont tell you this.
I’ll order my pint of water. Laugh.
And tonight
Dancing with friends,
Music blasting,
i will remember everything.
No one will need regretful instagram
stories the next morning,
you’ll thank me later
when you’re forgetful of keys
and which buttons to press on
the mcdonalds screens.
I wont need my forensics degree
To pick the scenes apart later.
As someone with that same reasons for not drinking; I am quietly sobbing into my glass of water.
