Is Stealth Viable in Far Cry 2?

  • INFAMOUS difficulty gameplay, footage is my own. It's important to note that my analysis is based on this difficulty setting, which I forgot to mention in the video itself. One of the reasons this is important is because dart rifle ammo is far more limited on the harder difficulty levels, and fairly plentiful on the easier ones.

    It's been about 7 months since I posted this video, and in hindsight, there's a few changes/additions that I would've really liked to have made:
    - I did not mention costs. The stealth build is probably the most expensive build to put together? This might be an oversimplification, but it's pretty expensive for what it gives you relative to other builds.
    - It's come to my attention that the Mac 10, despite being a loud gun, essentially functions as a silent weapon. Mind = blown: czcams.com/video/HSvyonzapGs/video.html
    - I failed to mention that my analysis was based on playing at Infamous difficulty. This is important for two reasons. One, dart rifle ammo is particularly scarce at this difficulty (making it hard to rely on vs a sniper rifle), and relatively abundant at lower difficulties (making the difficulty of stealth less of an issue). This in turn raises the value that I was trying to express of the silent makarov. The second reason is because, and not to sound like a snob, but I really believe playing this game on the harder difficulties is the best way to experience this game.
    - I SHOULD HAVE mentioned base fights (ex. Private Property, Mokuba, etc.). Honestly, I think I glossed over this partly due to laziness, but also due to time (wanting to keep this video short, wanting to finish making this in a month). I sort of tried to cover for this by including footage of base fights, as well as pushing the fact that outpost fights make up most of the FC2 experience anyway, but I think this was rather disingenuous. Unlike outpost fights, there's no avoiding base fights. And the dynamic of stealth changes significantly in base fights vs outpost fights, which would've been important to discuss. The dart rifle's limited ammo is not enough to deal with a base compared to an outpost. Regular sniper rifles are much better suited for the task.
    - I knew that FC2's creative director mentioned in Game Informer that they didn't have enough time to polish the stealth systems in this game, and in particular the AI detection system, but I failed to bring this up. Tbf, I don't exactly know how I would have talked about this topic given that I don't know the ins and outs of the AI's detection system, but it might have been worth researching or at least mentioning.
    - I probably could have talked about looking at stealth in terms of the game's "meta" vs just a casual player trying it. EDIT: One thing I said in the video (during the silent makarov analysis) is that I was looking at stealth from a more experienced player's POV. The problem with this perspective is that arguably most/any build is usable in an experienced player's hand. At the end of the day, this is just AI we're fighting. So I think looking at things from the casual/inexperienced player's perspective would have been more useful or interesting.

      Great video nonetheless. I personally think the silent mp5 is unnecessary. Even at infamous. An AK or FAL is very good in its place.
      I was able to complete the entire Mokuba mission stealthily using nothing but a silent Makarov and camo suit. On infamous, in broad daylight.
      As for the developers saying they couldn't polish the stealth mechanics, I feel they're good enough for a 2008 game. You actually need to hide in the tall bushes without moving and kill anyone that gets too close to avoid detection. Just think of the enemy AI as a real person. They should easily detect you even if you're only moving slightly. Best is to wait until they look away and then move ahead

    • @Atestinal
      @Atestinal  Před 3 lety

      @Imperial Enforcer So based on the comments, one thing I either should have been clearer about, or was missed in the video by some viewers is that I do recommend a regular assault rifle for the primary weapon slot. The MP5 has its share of problems like the ones I discussed, but I put it out there for anyone who wants a "pure" stealth build.
      As for the AI mechanics, I've said my piece on it with other commenters here, but I can't speak too deeply on the subject given a few points, such as that they could have patched it since the time the creative director made those remarks.

    1) The stealth in this game is an art, you have to be very aware of your surrondings, the enemies positions and the movemments
    2) The dart gun is OP, the suppressed makarov is trick but useful
    3) Ignore the combat transition music every time you shot a guy, if you dont hear shouts of gunshots you are fine
    4) The night and long range kills are your friends
    5) Move slowly, take it easy (the broken respawn can make things harder), change possitions if you need to.
    6) Kill the enemies very far from the others if the dont see the death or the body the dont get alerted.

      If you try to use melee then the enemies will instantly detect you since melee does not insta kill, rather it puts the enemy in an injured state. Though if you look away from an enemy and then attack and quickly look back at the enemy, it will insta kill the enemy. You will still be detected anyway even if you insta kill the enemy with melee.

      Im coming from the PS3 side of far cry 2, and everything OP said is correct. I will add this : hiding into bushes works exactly as it does in far cry 3 if you have the camo unlocked and if it's during thé night. The other day, I managed to remain in a bush two meters away from a dude who was facing me. He didnt see anything.
      On Legendary difficulty, stealth becomes much more viable than dragunov sniping.

    • @jmlkhan5153
      @jmlkhan5153 Před 3 lety +26

      Rishi V.L. Splinter cell was too linear and scripted for my tastes. The reason i prefer far cry stealth is because its a more emergent style than any other example out there. Metal gear games are great, but up until V, they tended to have only a few small stealth playground levels per entry. Thief, the original two, were excellent, and probably the silver medal for me after far cry 2.
      But primarily, i think of it as the best stealth because Far cry 2 is not a stealth game. Stealth is one of the many tactics available to you, to use or not, and is as reliable as your guns are, which is to say not very. Its just a tool that exists.
      And it feels natural. It is a stealth system that benefits from immersion, from pretending you are there and acting as you would act in that situation. It is a stealth that makes for better and more numerous emergent stories. All far cry 2 fans have personal stories about their first buddy that died, because the game really lends itself to that emergent play. The “broken” stealth is part of that.
      Plus its wilderness stealth, i aint see much of that even these days.
      We all have our own preferences. Nostalgia was not a factor in determining that far cry 2 is my favorite stealth. I been sneaking around since the days of oddworld and mgs1, and i still be sneakin around in rainworld. I dont even like shooters, i am terrible at them. It took me 300 hours to beat far cry 2 on infamous. Im coming at far cry 2 from the perspective of a stealth gamer, and it is in that context that i award it the prize.
      The best thing phantom pain ever did was give you the option to turn off reflex mode, markings, and the detection indicator in the options. I have never been able to enjoy a stealth game that employs these tricks since far cry. It ruined me for “casual” stealth.
      Sorry to go off on you like that. Far cry 2 is easily my favorite game ever made, i think its a masterpiece of artistic expression, i could go on for days.

    This is an excellent overview of stealth builds in Far Cry 2, and I would love to add to it based off of my own experience playing on console.
    The core tenants of stealth in FC2 are:
    • Vegetation (bushes, tall grass, and sometimes cover)
    • Stealth Camo (only works while crouched).
    • Weather (rain, fog, and especially NIGHT)
    • AI Behavior (explained in the following guide)
    Utilizing these three things will make stealth _possible_ but it requires game knowledge and skill to make it _reliable._
    *Transportation:*
    When driving at night, having the headlights off can increase your ability to drive on the African super-highway without feeling like Alejandro at end of Sicario 2 after every checkpoint. Having a few extra precious seconds before the enemy notices you're driving right through their checkpoint can buy you minutes of time to escape without them giving chase like you're driving an -ice cream- food-aid truck on its last delivery. Boats are viable down many rivers and can get you access to locations quicker and safer than by road, but there are some locations where this is inverse where going down river makes the worst of those multi-car/checkpoint pile-ups look like a minor fender-bender. You can't shoot and swim and and you sure as hell can't sprint away either. To the experienced player the dune buggy or hang glider would be a welcome sight to drive or fly over wilderness, but when a stray bullet hits the glider you may find yourself pulling more flips than an olympic gymnast descending to certain death.
    *Weapons:*
    The Machete is NOT a stealth weapon, there are no stealth melee kills in this game. Suppressed weapons like the MP5SD, the Dart Rife, and the Silenced Makarov are going to be your obvious choices, but unless you are a pixel-hunting god the Makarov will require an entire magazine of body shots to kill an enemy. Anything less than a headshot will alert the entire destabilized country. The Dart Rifle is your #1 best friend because it kills in one shot to the anywhere, unlimited range, and the fewer missed shots flying past enemies the less chance they'll be alerted. Be careful when carrying it for long periods of time or going for a swim in the Deadly Africanized Water because it corrodes fast. The MP5SD can be problematic for close-range headshots but great for inevitably mag-dumping your target and the one malnourished guard you didn't see earlier that happened to stumble right behind you. Bursts are useful after missing a perfectly available headshot because the hit-detection combined with the dexterity of a console controller will guarantee that at least a dozen times. Sniper Rifles may be a viable choice because distance is your friend, but the enemy can also counter-snipe or take the hint and hide behind cover. They can even hop in vehicles and close the distance, giving you little time to engage, run, or regret your choices that lead up to the moment before your face becomes aquatinted with the vehicle's grill. For consoles I recommend switching your Primary to an Assault Rifle or Secondary for an IED or M79 for blowing up enemies in a pinch. Great for sabotage, the inevitable vehicle patrol, and pursuing enemies. Nothing says stealth gameplay like screwing it up and having to sanitize an entire village!
    *Infiltration:*
    When you trek several miles to your target like the hiking montage in _Blood Dimond_ take a moment to recon the mess you're getting yourself into. Don't look for all the useless stuff your spotting scope might identlfy, look for anyone carrying a sniper rifle or a rocket launcher (assuming they haven't seen you long before you can see them). Do yourself a favor and shoot them on sight, there is no sneaking past them. The good news is that they are mostly social outcasts and seclude themselves in such places where they _might_ not be spotted by the other enemies. Sometimes you'll grab the enemy(s) attention enough for them to investigate the area. If you are lucky, it'll lead one away to an indeterminate point where they are completely forgotten by their fellow kin, where no one will care if one suddenly dropped dead... from cardiac arrest... from your neurotoxic darts.
    *Investigation:*
    When you kill someone, especially if the enemy notices. ALWAYS move! doesn't matter if you see an enemy running around from 200m away, when they sense a great disturbance in the force they will run right over to the exact spot in the jungle you are standing in by channeling their inner bloodhound. Hold your breath and remember, it is only your Last-Known-Position. Whether you hear "I'll check it out" or see guy(s) suspiciously approaching you. Back away while remaining crouched and watch if they continue towards your LKP. This can be useful when sneaking past enemies because they tend to be locked in a trance like the wildebeest in your headlights (well... right before they always commit suicide running headfirst into your vehicle because this Africa is too bad of a place for even the animals to want to live in it).
    *Evasion:*
    When you attempt to kill someone and the enemy starts shooting at you, run... Run like you are a Kenyan Olympian before you remember you're a mercenary with malaria that passes out whenever the plot demands it. Run off in another direction and try to break line-of-sight through cover, vegetation, or just haul your infected ass far enough for them to loose you; then go right back to hiding. If you do it right enemies will run like the other Kenyan champions in the race way over on the opposite side of the jungle. You lost the element of surprise but stealth can always be recovered when broken down to _not-currently-being-shot-at._
    Congrats, you have achieved Stealth of the African variety. Remember, As long as you don't find yourself fighting an entire warlord's army like its the final battle in _Tears of the Sun_ You're doing good enough!

    What constitutes a "successful stealth attempt"?
    www.reddit.com/r/farcry2/comments/jdnbi4/i_put_my_thoughts_down_on_video_on_why_stealth_in/
    This is a tricky question as there are several degrees of success, but I generally thought of it as "take out everyone before they get a chance to find you (even if they're on alert)." However, if you still manage to take out a fair chunk of the enemy forces before they find you, that's arguably pretty good, or good enough. Assuming you can handle the remaining forces, at least.

    I just ran into your channel, and I gotta say it's so nice seeing someone still caring for FC2 after 12+ years. Far Cry 2 was my first ever PC game -- I remember buying the CD/ROM from Best Buy with my dad when I was maybe 11 or 12. A year or two later I rebought it for PS3 -- and still play it to this day. Currently, I've been learning how to mod it -- been getting a ton of help from other mod creators, and I'm about 95% done with a entire game overhaul mod I've been working on. Regardles, I just wanna say I enjoy the content, and to keep on keeping on. It's nice finding people on this niche side of CZcams.

      @@Atestinal It'll be on NexusMods! It's called 'Far Cry 2: Modernized' -- it's essentially a custom / overhauled version of 'Far Cry 2: Redux' that suites my overall aesthetic and gameplay preferences. It uses an older version of 'FC2: Redux' as an original baseline, and from there I overhauled the graphical settings (primarily focusing on shadows, LOD, terrain, and render distance) to a point where it's now pretty unoptimized at higher resolutions (I'm not a veteran modder -- I tailored it to my own PC setup because I was never sure if I'd release it publicly, so it might not perform well for users with older hardware). It also includes the AI upscaled textures from Boggalog's 'Enhanced Texture Pack' mod, a custom made HDR-based ReShade I made (I'd wager a lot of people will use their own, mine is pretty dark and shark), a 4GB patcher that allows 'FarCry2.exe' to use 4GB of memory instead of only 2GB (because it's a 32bit executable), new gun textures for *some* guns and elements (like water), renamed all weapons and vehicles to be more "realistic" and descriptive, changed default control settings and rearranged the keybind menu, as well as renaming a handful of menu elements to what I think looked more appealing, it includes the user's choice of main menu watermark (4 available), fixes the Jackal audio bug, unlocks the predecessor missions, turns of blinking items for immersion, enables the machete "creeping" functionality from New Dunia, improved directional audio (not super noticeable imo but worth adding), unlocked DLC machetes, lowered game sensitivity so that the that menu slider is actually useful, changed max FPS to 95 (much smoother than 60fps, and at this FPS I have noticed zero issues or bouncing NPCs), changed FOV from 75 to 85, etc.
      I've gotten permission from Hunter (FC2:Redux) and Boggalog (upscaled textures) to use / modify their work, giving them due credit of course. They've been tremendously helpful; answering all my questions and helping me along the way. If you wanna see some screenshots of some of the work, you can check them out here: imgur.com/gallery/4CIfybc Unfortunately, I've tried using ShadowPlay to record gameplay to show it off, but for some reason the gameplay (and all the screenshots on Imgur) are MUCH darker than they actually appear in game. I was hoping to release this a few weeks ago, but I've been so busy with work it just keeps getting pushed back further and further. Luckily, I've been feeling really motivated this last week or two and have actually been doing some last minute tweaks, so hopefully it'll be out very soon -- next day or two at the earliest, end of the week at the latest.
      TLDR;
      It'll be on NexusMods pretty soon; check out screenshots here: imgur.com/gallery/4CIfybc

      Personally I'd recommend downloading it and giving it a shot, then likely trying to find a different ReShade that you like that doesn't effect performance as much. Even if you just try it out and bump it down to High settings, I'd wager it would still be a better experience than Vanilla just because of the bug fixes and quality of life changes. I prefer to play stealth, but to me stealth doesn't necessarily mean silent, and for realism I tend to avoid the DLC Rambo weapons (shotguns and crossbow). My load out is generally Mac10, Dragunov SVD, RPG in Part 1, and Uzi, AS50/AR16, RPG in Part 2. Stealthing to me is sitting out at extreme ranges and picking off as many mercs as you can, but you'll always find a bunch of mercs hiding once you go in to secure your objective, and the Mac10 or Uzi is the fastest way to finish of survivors close up. Stealth suit is a must, as is changing positions often, as the mercs will always home in on your firing position. Silenced Makarov is perfect for clearing safe houses, other sites with a few mercs, and assassination mission targets, but it's terrible for a close up firefight with multiple mercs (when your primary slot is filled with a long range snipe rifle). For a 'go in guns blazing' approach I'll use the M79 Grenade Launcher, AK47, PKM in part 1, and M79, AR16, SAW in part 2.

    I can agree to some degree. While I try to be stealthy and it is definitely a useful tactic in this game, I never go full stealth. IMO it's best to keep your loadout balanced, i.e.
    1) a long range weapon (silenced, if possible)
    2) a close to mid-range weapon (silenced, if possible)
    3) explosive/anti-vehicle weapon.
    I mostly tend to use these 3:
    1) The Dart Rifle - I usually don't bother getting into firefights while passing by the guard posts, so the dart rifle is pretty much essential - just silently take out the snipers/rocketeers (that would see you from far away) without alerting anyone else, and sneak around the guard post. Also the ammo is more than enough for taking out the snipers in an enemy base.
    2) Silent MP5 - After taking out the snipers, I move into the enemy base with a silent MP5. You don't necessarily want to get loud and call more attention to yourself, so having another silenced weapon is always good. Plus unlike the silent Makarov, the MP5 can be somewhat useful if a potential firefight breaks out.
    3) The M-79 grenade launcher - IMHO the best sidearm in the entire game. Much faster than a rocket launcher and doesn't take up your primary/special slot. It's pretty useful when the enemies gang up on you, but I can't stress enough how many times this weapon saved my ass from those surprising car patrols! Plus in many cases, the mission is to blow something up anyway. And this thing actually has a pretty good range - so then it's just hit and run.

    I am a newbie in FC2. I really like the stealth playstyle, I use it as a role play. I totally agree that it's far more risky and less effective than a sniper approach, but it's way funnier, you can feel the adrenaline. Besides, it's so satisfying when enemies are taken down in detail silently. My build for Act 1 is Silent Makarov + Dragunov + PKM. It will be pretty much the same for Act 2, perhaps AS 50 and SAW. The other build would be Uzi, FAL or AK and Dart Rifle. The DR is awesome, but the ammo is crippling. Well done by the developers, it'd have been OP otherwise.
    Concerning the silent shotgun, I'm not sure how silent it really is, since I have been detected using it even though I had landed a perfect headshot on the victim.
    I've not become yet a master using the silent Makarov, which it's the crucial point of the stealth strategy, but I've been able to infiltrate in Fort and get away with my mission killing only the snipers "loudly".

    I also play this game from more of a decade and all I can say is that the quality of gameplay is determined by the type of loadout you use. Using assault rifles and driving vehicles guarantees for that annoying type of gameplay where enemies overtake and stop you with their own trucks in a matter of seconds and where your own assault rifle is basically useless under 50 meters while enemies pour bullets into you from far beyond that while on the move. But should you try using sniper rifles and moving exclusively on foot, it feels like a completely different game. Despite none of them are able to mount silencers (exception is the dart rifle, plagued by extreme unreliability and limited amount of spare ammo), snipers are the best stealth tools in game when utilized properly. When you play the game for as long as I did, you basically know exactly how AI is going to react in certain situations. Snipe one enemy with a headshot and the rest will disperse and seek cover. Displace and locate another one and then wound them (Dragunov leg shot works the best). Watch enemies try to recover their comrade and kill them just before they try and pick 'em up. If you had the right timing you'll cause a loop in which the entire garrison will continue trying to save that one guy, with you just picking them off one by one until the whole location/guardpost is clear. Note that this tactic is not suitable for all the in-game locations though, so you might want to equip the LPO-50 in your last slot. It may sound weird but it also works great as a stealth weapon since enemies will not react to its bolts of flame as shots fired by the player.
    Anyway, I'm glad to see this game still has a dedicated audience. Kudos to you guys.

    • @Atestinal
      @Atestinal  Před 3 lety +4

      Glad to hear you're liking the stealth aspect. I love stealth and I don't have a problem using it, but I think the *real* reason for the complaints was actually due to inherent balancing issues, which is a lengthy topic I unfortunately only briefly touched on. In fact, I probably should have expanded on the topic, given its relevance.
      *TL;DR, stealth is slightly janky and the hardest build to play, and yet arguably the most expensive full build to make (if not, very nearly) and with the least amount of weapon options.*
      The longer answer:
      Clint Hocking, the creative director, mentioned in Game Informer (issue 190) that they didn't have time to polish the stealth aspects of the game, such as the AI detection system, and so he said sneaking is quite difficult. Another example he gave which I didn't touch on was how difficult it is to recover after being detected (re-sneaking isn't often an option, at least in my experience).
      The economy also wasn't balanced in time. Many diamonds were "pushed" onto the camo suit, which is the most expensive thing in the game, which Clint admitted costed way too much for what it gave. Saving up for it can take awhile at the start of the game, relative to just cobbling together a much stronger build for cheap.
      There's also only 3 stealth weapons in the base game (4 if you had the DLC), so you don't get much variety.
      All together, the "meta" is heavily weighted towards other builds. You're paying the most for the (arguably) weakest build. So there's not much /practical/ reason to play stealth. Only if you're really good at it, or really like it, or you're in the mood to try it. To be clear, I don't necessarily have a problem with this personally, it *can* be fun playing wacky stuff too, but I do see how it's an issue, design-wise.
      EDIT: It's also possible that stealth was adjusted during an update, and that the complaints were made towards the release copy.

      @@Atestinal I see where you’re getting at. I tend to use stealth more situationally, and thanks to my ArmA experience, I have no problem watching an outpost for 30 irl minutes in my observation point before moving into the AO. I haven’t even bought the camo suit so I have no idea how much it actually helps or not. I find that playing the stealth in a manner of “if a single pixel is exposed within their sight line your fucked” is actually really enjoyable. I think having to actually think about the sound of the body dropping, and where his buddies are looking and having to use your eyes and ears and not having a dumb camera that highlights them makes it so satisfying. But yea, got the DLC, I find the shotgun to be so much god damn fuck for stealth. It’s like, I’m gonna kill you quietly but still send your body 5 feet into the air. But yea, balancing or not I fell in love with the stealth and I’m glad it is the way it is. It really helps nail the atmosphere of “you’re alone and everyone wants you dead” and it makes the enemy AI seem actually smart unlike later AI. Also about being detected and not being able to go back into stealth? I love it. Makes the stakes higher and adds a bit of flavor to that realism, cuz I know if I saw some shadowy figure pop a bullet in my buddies head, I’d search all night and day for that mofo until I was 100% sure he fucked off and even then I wouldn’t be on the open but in some cover at least. • @wazzpqazzza

    I'd use a different metric for viability: Is it fun?
    I had this moment in an early mission in Shwasana on Infamous where you either have to retrieve an item or kill a certain NPC (can't remember).
    You know that mission, wide open water, lots of snipers on the buildings, about 20-30 goons with boats about and standing guns about. It was night, which I'm also sure you're aware is a plus. I'm like you; first thing to buy is the Silenced Makarov followed by the camo suit. However I put restrictions on myself: No Dart rifle, not allowed to re-fill ammo and health from safe houses or weapons shops.
    So in this mission I spent a good 10 mins scoping the place out with the monocular and found the snipers and some men that I thought gave me an opening and swam underneath the building when they were on the other side. I somehow managed to sneak past individual guards on the decking (the mission's item was inside the largest building on the second floor, the balcony of which contains a couple of snipers), into the building, complete the objective. Kill a guard inside the building on my way out, jump from the balcony into the water and stole a truck on the other side. No alerts.
    Still my favourite gameplay moment in all my time.

      At the end of the day, it's up to you how you will define the term. But as much as I don't like to get semantic, from what I've seen of community discourse I prefer to keep viability and fun as two distinct things.
      To use the yugioh card game community as one example, some people get offended when you call a deck they happen to like "not viable/competitive/good" and defend it by saying "well, I think the deck is fun." Which is a perfectly fine reason to use a deck, I do the same, but that perspective prevents any room for discussions of critical and practical analysis of the deck. Those discussions I think are important for a number of reasons, aside from just being fun to have.
      Boiling things down to whether things are fun or unfun in terms of viability gets kind of weird/sticky because there's a case to be made that every method is fun to somebody, and then there's no real need for videos like these.

    • @wazzpqazzza

      I get your POV but I opine that it's definitonally wrong.
      Where there is no competitive arena (or: no PvP 'ladder' or culture of competition with others) I have the opinion that the *only* measure of viability is fun. Otherwise what are you playing the videogame for? If it doesn't work then it's not fun, really (though it may be funny) and if it is too viable then it isn't that fun, either (though it may be satisfying).
      Where it is fun is right in the optimal zone of being just difficult enough to truly test you yet viable enough to actually create progress.
      So we agree, I just define fun as further upstream from.viability nay, viability is defined in terms fun, they are not seperate things, to me at least.

    I've always found stealth viable, but never as a solution. That's why I love FC2 so much. It's the the most realistic game you've ever played but the groundedness of it is what makes its stealth interesting.
    There's no detection meters, so not only does it feel less videogamey by merit of not having a huge meter magically telling you whether enemies see you or not, but it also makes stealth more of a tool than a playstyle.
    You can stealth most areas of you're skilled enough, sure. However, the average player it's likely going to be a tool to soften up enemy defences before the enemies notice and start searching. I personally love this because I thought stealth was way too strong in the later FC games.
    Stealth was the optimal way to play in 3 and on because as long as you stay undetected - which wasn't hard at all, just had to have patience - you didn't have to participate in hard fights. Sure, you have the option to ignore stealth in those games, but for me, I end up gravitating towards optimal playstyles because... Why wouldn't you?
    If a game puts a double barreled shotgun with a slow reload speed or hands me a bottomless mag minigun, which one would you take?
    Balance and viability are the spice to videogames and I think FC2 offered plenty of that. Stealth isn't the optimal way to play, it's either a tool to help soften up a larger fight that will inevitably break out, or with enough skill, an entire playstyle.

      That was my exact issue with Far Cry 3. If you didn't commit to stealth, the game would punish you by throwing an onslaught of enemies at you, and the stealth system doesn't feel very deep. Stealth is strong and easy and the game encourages you to primarily use stealth. Far Cry 2 is a very flawed game, but I enjoyed its approach to combat. You're not railroaded into a particular playstyle. Instead, the game allows you to experiment. Really wish Ubisoft improved upon Far Cry 2's concept. 2 is a fun game but could have been greatly expanded upon.

  • @Dharien
    @Dharien Před 2 lety

    The weapon system in this game really irked me. I mean the weapon slots. I wanted to do a silent sabotage raid and destroy some equipment which was my objective. Now I obviously wanted to bring silenced makarov, but I also wanted to bring ied so I could plant the explosives in silence, get out and once I have enough distance blow the objective up and leave everyone wondering what just happened. Sucks however that makarov and ied share same slot and mp5 is unreliable when it comes to headshots.
    But overall this game rocks and the stealth is a lot of fun. The weapons have a nice feel to them and the sounds just really help to sell the game. Headshotting a dude and hearing the brass hit wooden floor and roll around never gets old.
    Newer far cry games made stealth more approachable but also too “mechanic” with time to detect and marking enemies. But I still love the newer games as well but far cry 2 is maybe my favorite because it’s so grounded.

    • @Atestinal
      @Atestinal  Před 2 lety

      That's a really interesting point about how you can't use the IED and silent pistol together.
      I personally really like the weapon loadout restrictions in this game, but those two weapons do feel like they would make a cool pairing, at least conceptually. I think there's a mod or two that creates an extra slot just for the IED or flare gun, but perhaps a missed opportunity by the original devs there.

    I think stealth in FC1 and FC2 are somewhat flawed in a way. In Far Cry 1 the stealth was really developed, but when I played it the stealth didn’t matter as the enemies spotted me in the blink of an eye (on normal difficulty by the way). And I’m not new to stealth games, they are my favorite type of game. So anyways, in Far Cry 1 the enemies always find out where I am and stealth isn’t really an option in the first place unless you have a silenced weapon, such as the MP5. The only other way to use stealth with an unsilenced weapon is you must be really far, as they cannot spot where the sound came from at a far distance. Another small issue I have with the game, the game teaches you to throw a rock with the ‘g’ key to distract enemies. But, in gameplay when you do this to throw a grenade, they instantly spot your location and you either have to fight or try to hide again. In Far Cry 2 on the other hand, it seems like the problem is the opposite. In Far Cry 2, the stealth seems to work great except I feel that it’s underdeveloped. In Far Cry 2 you can use the environment more in your favor for stealth. For example, my main strategy of stealth is to create a brush fire and while the enemies are distracted sneak up behind them. If you try the grenade trick in Far Cry 2 it pretty much works most of the time. This is really handy to throw a molotov cocktail and create fires. One thing I wish they did bring back in FC2 is the ability to go prone. This feature brought much more strategy into Far Cry 1, as you had to go prone and change your gun fire mode (forgive me, I do not know much about guns) in order to get the smallest crosshair possible and be as accurate as possible. This isn’t possible in Far Cry 2 as the crosshair is removed, which I thing is good in some ways and bad in others. The removal of the crosshair in FC2 and a few other design changes makes the game more immersive in my opinion.

    • @Atestinal

      In FC2, you can enable crosshairs in the Options menu for difficulties below Infamous mode. Granted, this video was intended to look at stealth while in Infamous mode.
