I guess it doesn't matter to most, but it should be mentioned here that the M1060's are a Chinese copy of the USA made LCD-2 (Made in California) The difference in manufacturing quality and R&D is why the Audeze cost so much more. I'm not sure why this is never discussed?

    • @JoshuaValour
      @JoshuaValour  Pƙed 5 lety +3

Actually, from my personal teardowns, the driver appears to be a clone of the Audeze LCD-3F, likely a 1:1 replica, which is confirmed upon comparison to the sound signature of the real LCD-3F (for a modded 1060). I own the LCD-3F and can confirm that a modded 1060 sounds eerily similar to the real deal. I also own the LCD-2, albeit pre-Fazor, and it's much smoother/laidback sounding, lacking the aggressive edge/PRAT/energy of the 1060 and LCD-3F.

because I saw the following video on your channel M1060C OPEN REVIEW | vs. LCD2C, M1060, SUNDARA & VERUM 1
I'm trying to get started in the world of audiophilia.
I ask for your advice to be able to choose the best possible headset to start with,
since at this moment the music I listen to is very varied as
reggae, electronica (techno, minimal), disco, salsa, jazz, lofi
and my needs are the following: I want clarity, definition, a broad setting
different levels of depth in the audio, because I want to discover sounds and enjoy them
at all high, mid and low frequencies.
and precisely because of the budget that I have I was thinking about the hearing aid models that you present in your review
as well as the following: audio technica mrs 7b, akg k712 pro, meze 99 classics.
but I am open to listen to other proposals in audio.
I appreciate your opinion, since there are not many reviews in Spanish

First off great job JV. I love that you deliver with some of the most requested comparisons. That said I'm gonna disagree a bit here. I don't feel the mids are up to snuff here. Granted I was comparing this with He500, HD580, DT1990 and the Argons so perhaps I am being unfair. They didn't come across as natural for me and had quite a bit of shout. The bass however on the 1060c open is glorious. I'd go as far to say in that aspect alone they are one of the best under $500. Christ though that headband is bad. The knit headband wrap didn't do jack for me. I do however really appreciate the comparisons as I have not heard any of the headphones you compared them too but judging on what I heard on the m1060c open none of the other headphones are going to be for me or best the HE500. Was very intrigued with the lcd2c and the verums but I think you just saved me some time and cash. Thanks again for being awesome.

Interesting. I have HE-4XX and Verum 1. The Verum 1 extends so much lower than 4XX (I love how it growls), but the 4XX has more impact, or leading edge, or something. A headphone with best of both sounds good.

WTF, now even the 4XX has more slam than the V1?? That was supposed to be one of its main selling points other than the neutral-ish HD600-like response: dynamic performance vs. usual planars.

      @FriedEgg101 Pƙed 5 lety

@@d0nj03 V1 extends much lower and has plenty of slam, the 4XX almost has too much impact. The main selling point of the V1 is the Audeze-like signature for cheapo price, which it delivers. It's noticeably less 'V' shaped than the 4XX, with a smaller stage but better separation and imaging. The 2 headphones scratch different itches but the V1 is defo more capable.

I totally agree with you Josh. I am comparing the M1060 with the 1060C (Diana Krall - All for you via Tidal master). Diana's voice with the 1060C is smaller and less screamed than the M1060 which on the other hand has a larger and more liquid (more real) image but the high resonances with the M1060C are more controlled. The rendering of the M1060C is more relaxed and more intimate, the bass is always there, firmer (precise) and more controlled. The 1060C was tested open as suggested. It is not a big difference, in the sense between night and day, perhaps the M1060M with the metal arches is more robust. The headset is probably still to be run in, after running in the suspensions will soften. People should be less snobbish toward monoprice products.
    Great review, good.

Josh, first of all, congratulations on you work. I have a 4xx and a 6xx, for mids and highs i simply like the 6xx better in all senses. The reason for having the 4xx is for bass when EQ: Rap, pop, edm, etc. The 4xx non EQed doesn't have the bass quantity that i need at all. Would you think it makes sense for exchanging the HF for the m1060c modded? Soundwise.

This is a very convincing review, certainly makes the case that these are worthy of consideration even well beyond the original M1060s (which are my current planar of choice. I have the Rev2 modded with 3D printed fazors and rear grille, etc.) and it's served me well. However, I recently picked up a pair of Elears that I'm really enjoying, and I find I'm not loving the graininess that the M1060 has compared to them. So while I enjoy the idea of the M1060C open being that Planar bass slam and cleanness up top that I'm interested in, the real comparison that I'd want to see would be between these, the modded M1060C coming in between $250-$400, and the Mk3 Argon, coming in between $250-$350. The argon is frequently touted as punching well above it's price point, but I want to know how far. I realize there's some inconsistencies between the Argon being mostly closed and the open M1060C being open, but the usual open headphone property of wide soundstage doesn't seem to factor in for that headphone.
So, purely sound quality vs. sound quality, Mk3 Argon vs. M1060C open. Thoughts?

    • @JoshuaValour
      @JoshuaValour  Pƙed 5 lety +4

Hard, but I must gove the victory to the 1060c. The argons do have very impressive bass and better soundstage than the 1060c does. Even open.
But the Argons bass is bloated compared to the 1060C and while it has a large amount, it doesn’t have the raw slam of the C. C also has more even performance throughout the rest of the frequencies.
I would however suggest the argon for other things, like sound-staging or “closed” back listening. I like the argon more than the closed version of the C.
Argon also has more active treble. More uneven, but a little more present and fun than the C.
The Elear most likely kicks both of their asses in treble and timbre (if it’s consistent with the other focals I’ve tried).

Actually that gr07 bass is really realistic and fast, one of the best I have ever heard. M1060 would be perfect if It had that good quality of bass with a bit more clear mids. Opening them mmm makes mids a bit recessed and having them closed mids are really good, I kinda prefer mids a bit forward as they make heaphone more engaging. So I might switch to closed again as I didn't have problems with mids being too boring. Also having no foam I think increased basss amount which is very welcome.

Hi, I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250Ohm Open Back headphones and will be returning them due to the fact that they completely lack any bass... The sound, while very clear and detailed is completely weightless. I don't understand how people can think this is a good sound?? Like maybe if you listen to classical music exclusively they are good but I mean, come on you want something with a bit of weight to it. So anyway, I'm returning them and was seriously looking at the open back version of these Monolith's. Can I ask would I end up with the same weightless thin sound of the DT 990 Pro's if I went with the Open Back version of the Monolith 1060's? Or will they have considerably more bass? Or am I better off going for the closed back versions you talk about here? Keep in mind, I wouldn't even consider myself a bass head but I do like my sound to have a bit of weight to it. Also, I'm pretty sure Sundara's price drop is bond to manufacturing process change. The new "cheap" Sundaras don't rattle AT ALL (unlike the ones in Joshua's review), looking rock-solid and having much softer pads. I once wandered into a local big heaphone shop and they had Sundaras on display, played with them a little and they really rattled horribly and pads were sturdier and of cheaper leather(maybe store changed them to usual hifiman's focus pads on the pair I tested there with).
Listening to "cheap" sundaras 3 months already, even dropped couple of times by trapping cable in armrest and turning the chair(the worst way to drop headphones) - still working perfectly.

Hi Josh you rock ,when it comes to Direct headphone comparisons..
I really like your style down to earth to the point but still detailed and valuable.
Zeos is great for fun and reference and amps/Dacs, Crinacle for objectivity and graphs but none of them do it as similiar to my preference and style as you (I help people with audio products in my country just in written form.
Anyways when I get money (just came from vacation so not right now) I am looking to buy Open Back Planar cuz I don't have one in my collection. I have Dt 880 Editions 32,
    Fostex tr-80, Audio Technica Msr7B, Isk Hf2010,Audio Technica M30x ,
Sony Wh 1000 Xm3 and from Iems I have Kz zex,Moondrop Chu , Ibasso It00, Cca Csn, And Sony Ex110apb.
So quite a bit of flavours but generally I like Resolving headphones, energetic but we'll behaved ones .
I don't like too dark headphones, I don't like too smoothened out headphones. I like my treble to bring me air, to shimmer but don't hurt (for example dt880 is perfect ,msr7b and fostex tr 80 too) I hated Dt990. I hated M50X loved m30x, I disliked Sennheiser Hd 650.
I love upper midrange to be on the edge of shouty and just playful female vocals and stuff. I love when guitars have edge to them.
I like fast defined bass but I also Like Sony Xm3 which can really dig down to lowest notes In impactfull way.
My source is Zen Dac V2 and I when I get funds I will get some portable dac/amp like Ikko zerda itm01 and some Heavy dac amp like Xduuo TA 01b. On Phones
I use Xiaomi mi 9 Lite and Realme Gt 5g with my own wavelet Eq target.
Based on this long ass post, Can you answer me what Planar Headphones would I like That would be a bit different approach in fonaliy and presentation compared to Beyerdynamic Dt880/Ath Msr7B which I love, but still to be at least comparable in therms of Technical performance...
And still to be available in Europe via ship from China and to not be much expensive lets say below 300 dollars range ? Would I like Monolith m1060

  • @tumetal

Here i was hopping to see the modded 1060c's compared to modded 1060's, as nobody really listens to the 1060's stock - nor should they - as they really are demonstrably flawed out-of-the-box. Mine followed the popular mods with basic foam removal, fuzor vents and more more open grilles. In all honesty, they sound eerily similar to my LCD-3F's (more aggressive/detailed/higher PRAT), rather than my LCD-2's (laid-back/smooth), which is the 1060's typical standard for comparison, although mine are pre-Fazor.
The fact that I can even position these next to the LCD-3F leaves me utterly perplexed how they didn't get more traction in the audiophile community. I'm almost positive, having taken both headphones apart, that the driver's in the 1060's are 1:1 LCD-3 clones. Sure - everything else about the headphones fall short but the main ingredient is there and with some basic DIY you can get pretty darn close to the real thing, a little less refined, at a 10x discount. There just isn't a better value proposition out there- not even in the same ballpark.
However, there might be! I just pulled the trigger on a decent pair of used 1060c's which, ironically, have already been opened up with the same carbon fiber grille mod featured in this video. Have to say - whoever designed those grilles knows what they're doing. Looks better than stock.
However, I'm still skeptical the open-back 1060c's can outperform my modded 1060's. If so, I will probably end up buying every 1060c that comes up for sale. Harvesting the drivers alone is worth it to me and should make for some very interesting fully ground-up builds down the line...
Quick question - I heard that the 1060's have wider soundstage than the open-back 1060c's, did you find this to be true of the stock 1060's?... Assuming this even gets read 4 years later lol?

Even if it is because of reinforcement issues, they could use better materials, charge an extra 25%, and market it as 2 in 1.

Would the M1060C with the open back mod be an “upgrade” to the M1060? I guess a wide soundstage would mean games are more immersive and that’s a big plus. However, I like a lot of bass in my games so that renders most options from Sennheiser out of the picture (598, Game One’s, PC37X, etc).

@@matheusmazzei4077 well i have ath 1000x. i dont recommend the verum. this was a year ago. my verums lasted 3 months. they had mad channel imbalance and the earcup went out on me. dude sent me some fixes that didnt work. offered to fix them but i had to pay like 40$ in international shipping which is understandable but its just not worth the hassle, money, ect. the quality control and build quality are just not there and the warranty isnt worth fucking with since its one dude. just get a pair of sundaras or something lol. the m1060s were great but they were just heavy. the verum ones did sound just a bit more clear as far as resolution but again, not worth the hassle or money.

@@affinity601 oh, thats sad, it was the first version of the Verum or the MKII? I was looking into the M1060c open mod too but beside the bass doesnt look the best in category, and the Sundaras are too dry for me. Verum1 looked perfect, good bass and smooth but with details, resolution, and easy to drive but yeah

 QC problems are a problem.
