The name plate is From Denmark. It says "Byggeår" It means Build Year in Norwegian/Danish. The stickers are also in Danish. It would have been Baujahr in German. Gas cap says "Use Castrol 2-stroke oil" in Danish. The engine was made in Sweden, judging by the stamp on the flywheel. These where known as "Pedal Assisted" Mopeds, you would pedal it up to speed, and use the speed/momentum to start the engine. It was normal that these where so weak that you had to pedal going up-hill. the most common one was known as the Tempo.
It does say Castrol oil. I wonder if they mean the name brand oil Castrol. Or if they castor bean 2 stroke oil.
@@michaelbrinks8089 It's not Castor bean oil, It's the brand Castrol, an old and well known maker of high quality lubricants of all sorts.
@@SantaClaw Ya, it says Castrol like the brand name ....Castor type 2 stroke oil is commonly used in 2 stroke engines. Which is made from castor beans. At first I thought cap said castor.
You are right, it’s not a German Moped, yet there have been some very similar Mopeds/Bikes in the 50/60th around, from Zündapp, Herkules or Kreidler, some famous old, German Brands
This engine is actually made in Denmark - by estlander engines from roskilde - but is a licesend halleiner motorenwerke engine... These moped with the SCO engine produced 0.8 hp - so not fast.. Dont know about this engine thoug
This is an Estlander moped, made in Roskilde, Denmark. No kickstart, you just pedal it like a bicycle, drop it in gear and hope the engine starts. If not, you've got one damned heavy bicycle... Nice find, Joe. 🇬🇧👍
It's a Grand HF Sachs sport From H.F Christiansen in Aarhus.
This is from a period when principles were more important than money. A work of art.
The sticker on the tank is Danish and translates to “Specialty store bicycles and sewing machines” Harold Petersen. Most probably the original seller of the bike, like a dealer sticker.
Exactly what I was about to say.
It is sold in Sarpsborg in Norway. Most of the parts used is from Germany and very common in Skandinavia att the time. The tires is from Askim manufactured there. Magura is very popular brand fo most 50cc mopeds.
@@rask-drosje Magura is still around. They make breaks, for bikes, till today
We need a part 2 to this asap
4:34 says special shop for bikes and sewingmaschins in danish from Aalborg Denmark.. The writing on the gascap is also in Danish - saying Use Castrol 2 stroke in the gas.
Hi Joe, the shiftmechanism is called , zweigang Handschaltung, look at the fuelcap it says 1: 25 for the mix, you have to free up the clutch, its a little bit sticky. Also clean the exitport of the cylinder, a littte adjustment of the shiftlever and the ' red rocket' starts flying. I realy enjoy your content keep up and thank you. Greetings from germany😊
Greetings from Portland OR. U.S.A.
thats Rodger DeCoster talking lol
The exhaust pipe may be blocked due to carbon accumulation. It used to be very common due to the abundance of oil.
You should send the seat out to a leather seat specialist. That bike is sick. Your best find yet
A seat from Denfeld, made in Germany may fit. The Motor is build under Lizenz from Express Motors Germany. Express build Mopeds in the 50th.
BRO THATS DANISH! its so rare it would go for like 5 - 10 grand (in running condition), here in Denmark. Love your vids ; )
Whats is written on the fuel tank is that its build in a special (bike and seewmachine) workshop of some sort and its build in Aalborg, (where i live)
and on the gas-cap it means you need to use 1 - 25 mix (2 stroke oil)
Hello in Denmark! My wonderful Foster parents are Danish, USA.
Built in Rockslide! Doesn't sound promising Loll!!
Very cool bike!
That Danish bike is amazing Joe! You scored big time on this one! I'd keep this baby for the rest of my life if I were you. You'll probably never see another one. Awesome awesome machine!
Denmark is country of origin. My family is from Copenhagen, Denmark. 2 cycle 25:1 fuel mixture. FYI benzin is gasoline in German. This is a pedal assist moped. Start pedaling with decompression valve open and once your moving good in 1st gear close valve to start engine.
The horseshoe lock on the bike is a Basta lock and I have one on my regular bike from Denmark. The combination comes from 6 little pins that are pulled or pushed or left in neutral. Every bike is outfittet with a look like that. Don't lock it unless you have the combo! Great find!
The small compartment was ment for some tools or a little 2 stroke oil can
Till the last 70th years it was normal at nearly every german gas station, you had little pumps with 2Stroke premix in 1:25 and 1:50
And the 3 Gears on the left side of the handle was a pretty modern thing in the 50th. Some German Mopeds/bikes and a lot of old Vespa used to have „3 - Gang Drehgriff Handschaltung“ what means 3 gears by a turning Handlebargrip
Also I’m fairly sure that this is a re-branded Danish scooter/moped from a brand called SCO. You might find more information searching for that 👍
I had several bikes from that Co as a child. Seems like it was a solid quality bicycle back then.
Joe you might have just gotten one of the rarest mopeds ever made 😮
But it is no scooter 😂 moped or mofa we call it here. Greets from germany 🙂🤙😜
@@Rocky-zr1918 true. But still an eye catcher
@@E-BIKE_Madness Exactly. Scooters are step-through with small wheels.
Now that is a treasure Joe , I was born in Germany 🇩🇪 this belongs in your living room
It does belong in a special place with a spot to keep it very secure and have climate control 🎛️ maybe even have a plexiglass case or train the fluids laid on its side make a plexiglass table in front of your couch with it laying sideways in it would be cool
Joe I'd send some pics to Mike Wolf in IOWA , American Pickers he has a vast knowledge of bicycles and motorcycles, I'm sure some from his store could give you the info you seek, great find for that special spot on the display floor of that Magnificent Shop your going to build sometime in the near future, AWSOME FIND.
I had a similar bike in 1968. It was a Garelli but the engine looks the same. Mine had a manual clutch and I seem to remember starting it on the stand. I think this could be worth a stack of cash to a collecter. You should keep it. This type of bike was popular all over Europe especially France where they can ride them aged 14!
I bet there was like 50 of us saying please don't pull the seat apart anymore then it is. This moped more for a restoration not a CZcams run through the yard. Great find so hope keep it is good shape and sell to a collector for sure. Glad you didn't get cut by the loose chrome because its one of the sharpest materials you'll find
Yeah, sad ... but this has to be replaced anyway. You cannot rescue leather that sat maybe 30 years in a barn and dried out, is full of fungi or who knows what.
A saddler can do a restoration, meaning a rebuild of those parts. Anyways, this is THE essential part of the Mofa, as you sit with your backside on it, hehehe:)
This has to be functional. And what do you mean with "collector"? There are thousands of this kind in use in Europe and maybe 10k of them still in barns and garages. They are not rare. Yeah, they are oldtimers, but it would be a shame to not make them running again and drive with them on the street.
I absolutely love old machines like this one. Thanks for showing us your find. So very cool.
Hi Joe, Except for the pedals, it looks remarkably like the Sachs engine on my old 70s Arctic Cat Mini bike. Granted, that was a two speed automatic, but very close! Great job on getting it running!! Always enjoy your videos. Thanks for bringing us along. P.S.....I took an old wood dust collector, removed the top and bottom bags. covered the openings with plywood round cut outs. Cut a 4" hole in the top one for the flex pipe. (Used 4" flex drain pipe from Home Depot) for exhaust vac intake and to vent it out my shop. Works great!
Great Find! Variety is what I like about your channel and old Vinney. Does give off a 1940s-50s BMW motorcycle vibe
I did see spark on the original plug. When checking for spark, turn your lights off. Its easier to see spark then.
To be honest I would offer it to a museum so everyone can enjoy the rarity of the bike. Great find
Great video Joe as always! Always looking forward to your next video… Have you seen how much those Bing carburetors go for? Wow! Good find
It looks like a Danish SCO "grand super" moped from the 50s - but it should say SCO on the engine..
That inspection hole that you filled the primary drive with oil is for adjusting the clutch not an oil level . If you take the inspection cover off again you will see a slotted screw with a lock nut , this pushes on a rod that goes right through to the clutch.
3:15 - yes - that's a Danish bike shop - i am sure this is a SCO grand super moped..
That thing is really cool!! You should definitely put that in your collection of the ones you won’t ever sell. As always, another great video!
Hahahahaha. Last bike was a scooter and you called it a moped , this is a moped and you called it a scooter . If it has pedals , it's a moped . Looking forward to you working your magic .
Motor-pedal. You are correct! Just learned the difference a year or two ago
He’s not the sharpest
39:47...a little 40:1 going in. Check out the petrol cap. Pretty sure it says 25:1. These early mopeds weren't meant to power you from standstill. Initially you'd pedal and then the engine would gently assist you.
Good fix, and good luck setting up the float height. Haha.
Not strictly true, even this one could power you from a standstill without pedaling unless its up a hill or you are, by the standards of the time, very heavily loaded. 1 hp isnt much, but its enough for 20 mph or so.
Thats from Denmark didn't expect to see that on your Channel😱😱
Look up the moped called the nsu quikly they share the same engine. I have worked on both in the past. Hope this helps.
It's a moped, bro. To replace the seat, you only need the rubber cover portion. The seat is probably Denfeld, or Pagusa. Don't buy the metal parts, if yours are clean, and rust-free. Both companies seats are a bit expensive. I used to have a Puch moped with one. Is the engine possibly a Sachs? Looks like some of them. You can modify many kinds of moped chamber pipes, to give this engine more power. You can get them in a range of performance levels, and riding styles. Circuit, mid-range, high-range...
Ya know, those old fingernail files that are made of sandpaper work really well on points. They are also really easy to get into the points to clean them rather than regular sand paper ...just a suggestion. keep it up I have learned a lot from your vids!!
Emory board
Well, this is an obvious statement of where we’re all at: 1) it IS cool. 2) you are sick. With exercise, proper diet & counseling you might get over things like this. Or take a nap (less expensive therapy but much cheaper). I’m no better, but I can vicariously go through without spending a dime. My wife, who can be mean as a snake on stuff like this, would kill me if I brought a bike home. Your wife must be a model of understanding. Thanks for a ‘Grand’ video. Cannot wait for next episode!
❤ I didn’t think you had chance of getting it to run. Congratulations to you you can keep it on your truck like a hood ornament
Dude he's gotten a lot to run this is 1st grade stuff lol
@@ptsdgopedsnbikes8156run, but definitely not very good. My daughter can get a 2 stroke running, but it takes attention to detail to get things running correctly. This guy has never exactly checked that box.
That carb float should have a wire soldered on the edge of the hole and the needle goes past it, so you can set the float height. The wire acts as a kind of a spring, keeping the float set to the needle. That's propably the reason why the engine doesn't rev as high as it should.
That is correct. It is a: NOS Bing Brass Float with Needle. That hole should not have been soldered.
Well hopefully he reads comments before he takes it apart for no reason. Great find love it and please flip it for something more ur style
44:48 The laugh of joy
it looks so cool..i know you can get it running pristine eventually joe..ive learned so much from you keep it up..my bikes are probably a cakewalk for you..i have alot of vintage bikes
The nice gold sticker is in Danish and it says "special shop bicycles and sewing machines". The gas cap says "use castrol 2 stroke xxl in the gasoline 1: 25 Danish also.
Magura is a common and respected manufacturer of brake levers. Cool bike, fun that some of your viewers knew what is was.
I love your videos, your dedication always. Usually watch in morning with coffee, but couldn't wait this time. U the man:)
Great find. A good place for moped parts like tires, universal cables, etc., is Treatland Mopeds.
Essential to have correct grade & type of oil in gearbox for clutch to stop slipping...
You will wear the friction plates out very quickly !
Look up DKW Hummel for oil type
Love this channel! Makes me wanna go tinker on my 450 or RSV4RR. Actually the Aprilia is mint but the 450 needs a carb cleaning.
As a frequent visitor of Vintage moped meets in Scandinavia, the engine fitted to this looks very familiar. Cant say exactly what model it is from a glance in the first minutes of the video, but its common on older scandinavian mopeds for sure. Top speed, at least where I am at, was legally required to be below 19mph-ish.
In fact, I borrowed something very similar looking from a friend a few years ago to attend such a meet as a participant.
Austrian hmw engine license build by estlander was also used by other Danish makes dutch as in the Wooler sporty made by the tyre factory Jyden in thentown of Aalestrup .... Denmark
Estlander Motors is a Danish company. Which is Denmark. Which is in Scandinavia. That pin on the pedal crank is a cotter pin. Most people call split pins cotter pins but they are not.
@8:05 that rear wheel lock is almost identical to the lock I have on my bicycle here in Japan. Almost every bicycle here has a lock like that. Very cool bike, I would love to have something like that here to cruise around on.
Awesome Joe, what we used to call in the UK 🇬🇧 was a peddle and pop 😂 aka (thomas50) , keep up the great work 👍
Is a rebranded SCO European bike, when you do a search for SCO you will find it, they still made these in the 70’s.definitely a head turner in the US
Thanks for the surprise. and the Different Twist!!!!
We called them a Help-My-Trap which translates to Help-Me-Pedal. A hybrid between a bicycle and motorcycle. There is a disengage mechanism between the engine and pedals. Like a ratchet so the motor does not speed up the pedals but the pedals help the engine only. Don't ask me to explain. I rode one in the 70s.
Is that like Joe dirt is that like the Mopar rear end scene with his family or his dad says who knows how a Mopar posi traction works nobody does it just does😂😂
I get it, a freewheel
@@michaelbrinks8089 Yep, thats exactly it. Same as any other bicycle, effectively.
The engine looks like a Sachs to me, which is a german brand as well as the Bing carburator. If I recall correct I repaired one of those like 30 years ago by replacing a gasket ring around the shaft as it dropped oil onto the clutch dryplate, which had a similar effect as what you were facing. It might be the case that kick starting it that you have to use the thumb lever on the right hand side to get out of bicycle mode. Some mopeds had that as the design idea was that you should be able to pedal on it as well with those early mopeds. An other important thing with handshift engines like this is to adjust the gears wire to optimal positions too. Ratio 2 stroke oil: gasoline is 1:25 for those old machines.
Cool moped,I've had something similar, when you peddle them in neutral a gear similar to a starter motor is supposed to engage the clutch, when it starts you stop peddling,so that gear must not be working properly, also before you peddle it,u pull in the decompresser and release it when the engine spins over,to stop the engine, just pull in the decompresser lever..Ian..UK.👍
Hi, gr8 video, gr8 bike 1. to start: get on bike on the centre stand, lean forward with feet on pedals to keep back wheel off ground - pull in decompression lever at the same time apply choke (if cold} and a little throttle and pedal quickly till engine turns over quickly then release decompression lever to start!! 2. the inspection plate on right side is to adjust clutch (not sure adding oil was good idea ? aren't they dry clutch? maybe I am wrong not sure!) I used to own and ride a very similar bike to work! hope this helps..... good luck and another gr8 find!....
Wow, great find. A real beauty, great job
S.C.O. Minor Grand. if you google that, you'll find some photos. I also found a pamplete calling it model name "the flash" as well.
It Danish, Estlander Motors A/S, Roskilde.
Hi Joe, great content love your videos 😊👍
Just a thought but that needle that fits in carb do you think it might have been soldered to the bridge, that way when float rises the needle cant get stuck
Just a thought bud 👍
Right. That hole should not have been soldered.
Vice grip and large washer to open that large side cover screw instead of buggering it up by hitting it with a screw driver. Try it. :)
Good idea!
It looks like my first motorise vehicle, an NSU Quickly. They were motorised pedal cycles, just like many of the electric cycles nowadays. You had to pedal to get them going and especially uphill so they were more popular in 'flat' countries in Northern Europe. I can't wait to see it on 'The Land'. I'm only up to 10 mins in your film and maybe you've taken it moto-crossing already. 🙂
I own the quick 50 not the quickly. Cool machine.
Nuttal in Cadishead used to race NSU Sportsmax, his brother used to restore NSU Quicklys, he had a 90mph promotion quickly.
I bought a NSU Prima D of him.
Awesome score on the bike i didn't think it would start as easy as it did that would be cool if you could get the peddles working right its a definite keeper
What a great show piece for your showroom .
When you have to build a shop on your property.
And you will.
Wow, rare find, unique. It takes knowledge and patience. Keep up the hard work, subs up views up
The bicycle lock is a combination lock. The rear wheel brake is the same function as a "normal" bike brake, i.e. reverse pedaling will actuate the rear wheel brake, only. The front wheel brake is the the lever in front of the throttle grip on the right handlebar.
Nice moped. Comments say you have to pedal it while moving to get it to start. Good luck!
I recognise some danish writing on the tank
both on the tank emblem and tank lid
from what I can see of the engine, this is a Sundap 49 cc Austrian/South German moped. I have had a match in Norway when I was 14 years old (1974)
Do you mean Zundapp
Only the engine.
I think even the old Sears speedometer is worth a few bucks. Can't wait for the next video.
You need emery boards to easily clean your points. They are cheap and better than sandpaper.
Herm... lol. Those old Euro bikes are very collectable. Spent 05 to 08 in Germany, seen some pretty sick old vintage bikes.
C'mon Vintage thought we went through this already. Peddles = Moped, no peddles= scooter😑
I got the title correct lol
Yep the Ducati ! These two are right up my street .
@@2vintage The clutches on these mopeds were not designed to take off from stationary . Be careful you don't wear it out . The M.A.C. club in Britain may be able to access your parts eg. speedo . etc.
No, scooter are the ones with body cladding. You can have a similar bike with no pedals and no cladding. They can be called mopeds or just simply a light motorcycle, depending on the cc of the engine and local regulations, etc.
As A Swede I have to inform that the Moped is actually originated from Sweden, then it was adopted in the later 50s into English, german, and other countries. A moped is a motordriven 2 wheel vehicle with an engine with a maximum of 49cc. Originally it was with pedals (motor+pedal shortened to Moped, but then it later became the name for all 49cc motorbikes, even without the pedals
Great find good job getting it running.
1:25 seems to be oil-gas mix. Cool find.
I haven’t got time to watch the whole video joe but this is looking good so far! Don’t let this thing go unless it’s a deal
You cant find the dial in the sears catalog because we used to take them off the old exercise bikes and put the on our motorrods or regular bicycles. It works!
Good job my dude if you need any help with anything I know a shit ton about those engines/bikes I built a newer one 80cc G2 reed valve window piston fmf expansion chamber. And high compression billet head on a 1999 specialized hardrock classic mountain bike. Same bottom ends though clutch system on mine is the same as yours when u start it up get on it and pedal till you get to about 5 to 10mph if you can get a lil hill with some run way it should pop off pretty easy when it starts pull in the clutch and warm it up. You might wanna give it a little pedal assistance here and there when you take off just intil you get the rpm's up. Then it should max out at 40-45. Cuz it's all stock no mods but that's why its sutch a awesome find that's what you want all original if you can track down a Speedo for it...
You need to learn some PDR skills you can knock that dent out of the fender and that last bike you bought with the dented tank you could knock bot those dents out
She lives! Great video!
Neighbors thought somebody was just running a leaf blower lol
Amazing! You should start your own museum!
Joe I enjoyed reading comments as much as I did watching the video. Hay next time you may be in Walmart or a drugstore pick up a package of Emery files you know the thingies the wife uses on her finger nails thay work pretty good for cleaning on those points?
The bike was trying to tell you not to rev it rigjt away but thats your thing. Old engines dont like to rev before there warmed up and have oil everywhere they need oil. Especially after sitting for god knows how long.
Hes pretty good, but not the most mechanically sympathizing typ of guy, to say the least. Also, not the most knowledge of true vintage machinery despite the channel name, perhaps.
I have a Batavus moped and I had the same experience, got it running, then did a resto. Split the case and put new rings, etc. I live on a slope street and it never had enough power to climb anything. It's been sitting for years now. I tried everything and even put a new carb on it. Nothing worked. Mine has a small lever on the left to engage the clutch to start the motor using the pedals. It's more of a brick than a usable moped. Hope you get your sorted.
Depends , really. unless its pretty steep, it should be able to go up hill, though quite slowly, 10 mph or so. Top speed on flat ground should be about 20-25mph.
@@GoldenCroc exactly, it should. I just could never get it running right.
Hmm. I’m gonna say post it to a classic or vintage euro/danish bycicle/motorcycle forum. See what they can find with their resources.
The clutch is very oil sensative. It needs cleaning good. And the clutch lever should engage the engine around half its pull . Very rare moped. Good luck . From the uk .
Great find. Very cool bike. Definitely a keeper
Wow they don't build em like that anymore. Good luck with the tear down can't wait to see what's inside 😉
Hmmmmmm...... this should get interesting!!! 👍🏼
in italy we also have a lot of these small motorised bicycles, they usually sell for nothing tho, like 100-200 euros. I can tell you, they're extremely cool to work on but they are painfully slow. the hole on the headlight is probably just the place for a emblem of some sort, my Garelli Mosquito has a plastic cap on there with the logo of the manufacturer. and it also has no speedo of sorts.
I really enjoy your content. What happens to all of your repaired treasures?
on the fuel cap:
Burg
Castrol
2 Takt XXL
- I Benzinen
1:25
so ...
Burg -> Castle
Castrol -> Apparently a oil manufacturer
2 Takt XXL - > 2 Stroke XXL ... but i have no idea what they might mean by that
- i Benzinen -> Also dosent make a lot of sense Benzin = petrol / Fuel; Benzinen would be like "fuelen" or Petrolen ?!
1:25 Thats like the only thing that makes sense...
others have figured it out its dainish thats why in german its sort of understandable but not quiete ...
Excellent find and great video
That clutch slip was bad. Silly question but are you sure it’s a wet clutch? The hole you filled it through looked more like an inspection/adjustment hole to me. Great little thing though. Reminds me of a Mobylette I had in the 60s. A hoot to ride.
paper nail sanding sticks work great for cleaning points
Joe the premix on that is on the gas tank it says 25 to 1. Really cool!
Just googled Grand moped and it came up straight away. Danish company that made a few moped models. Yours is the senior I believe. Ceased production in the late 50’s
Check exhaust for carbon build up also.
