  • Today we're working on a lovely Certina DS2 from 1976 that hasn't seen much love for a long time. Certina is one of those brands that kind of fly under the radar; making high quality watches at a good price but with little visibility to the broader public.

    I'm a big Certina guy, as you know. So after your 'when did you last hear about...' question I was shouting my answer at the television. My dog was frightened, and she thinks it's your fault. ☺︎︎
    I own 2 modern DS Certina's and will soon buy a 3rd.
    Unfortunately the brand no longer uses its own superb mov'ts, but fortunately the brand lives on. This is the twin edged blade of Swatch Grp ownership.
    Over the next year I need to thin out & re-structure my core collection. But one day I'll pick up a Certina Argonaut. That's my pick of the 3 handed vintage Certina 3 hand sports watches.
    Another great video. This is the 2nd time I've watched it, I was distracted the 1st time.
    Thanks again. 𓆉

      @VintageWatchServices  Před 2 lety +2

      Give my regards to your dog! 😂 It's indeed a different matter nowadays, since pretty much all manufacturers use standardized movements. Certina made some very high grade movements that were quite popular also with other brands, and they're a joy to work on. The Argonaut is a cool watch indeed, and available in a lot of varieties!

    • @anthonysmith2982
      @anthonysmith2982 Před 2 lety

      @@VintageWatchServices Indeed they did. I should've been clearer: the TV case Argonaut chrono's are not for me.
      I can picture the specific variant I prefer, typical 70's cushion case, typical late 60's / 70's Certina with a cross on the dial and Certina at 9, Argonaut at 3...
      I know that it's an Argonaut... something. Can't remember what?There's a number of them around though. Such a beautiful example of a practical 70's daily sports watch!
      Cheers and thanks again.

      I am a fan and respect Certina and as well Mido. I would rather have those 2 brands than Tissot or Hamilton.
      Is it true that with the powermatic 80 movements, swatch group at time of service just replaces the entire movement over servicing them?
      I don't get too hung up on in house. My 1861, 1863, 3861s and 3132s I don't truly consider in house. The only watch I own that I consider in house would be my jlc 822. Call me weird I guess. Sometimes I hate this hobby with all the shitting on other brands etc. I love everything from Seikos and Grand Seikos to Breitlings and Zeniths. I guess it's the archieluxury affect with everyone shitting on everything.

    Very interesting video. I bought my Certina DS2 when I was I8. This watch was suggested by a watch maker, as it would suit my job as a fitter & turner apprentice. The watch would suit my work, because it is very shockproof, and my work would be heavy industrial.
    I am now 68 & although it was repaired once for a broken clamp, it is still going strong & keeps good time. Roy

    Certina are fantastic wristwatches that I think were very successful locally. In Sweden as an example, Certina was a very popular brand back in the fifties and sixties. All older men in Sweden know Certina as high-class watches.

    I love Certina and thoroughly enjoyed this video. My Certina DS Action Diver 38mm is about 1 year old and is my most worn watch. It keeps better time and has better fit and finish than a much more famous and talked about brand that I own (that will remain anonymous), which is currently in the shop for a warranty claim. At 1/5 the price of that other well known brand, I'm seriously considering selling the other watch once it gets back from service. I guess we'll see how I like it after it gets back...

    I hear about certina almost every day because it is my favorit brand. They are often understated, underrated and underappreciated. My mother got a gold certina watch from my dead when I was about 10. That is 50 years ago. The watch had some kind of jewels inside on the edge between the case and the dial. It was a sweet thing. I got several certina, Among them a gold watch, a beautiful dress watch plated with black dial and a 200m diver i have not used yet. It is 7 years since i bought it. So when I am going to buy an other watch that need to have class it must be a certina. It show much more of a caracter than whering a rolex I cant afford to service.

    Thanks for sharing! I own a Certina DS-2 that belonged to my father, he was sold on Certinas. Worked as a mechanic, servicing mostly paper mills. Tough environment but the Certinas kept ticking! Remember a more recent Certina DS he had that was all scratched up but the (sapphire?) crystal was crystal clear (pun intended!). Unfortunately the DS-2 has stopped working after me tinkering with it when I was younger, now I wish it worked and I could use it and remember my father. Not sure what the cost during the 70's but I guess it wasn't the cheapest watches around but still not too expensive that he wouldn't dare to wear it daily?

      Hello Troy, thanks for being such a loyal viewer! It always depends on what needs to be done. A simple time only movement that only needs a service could be done in a couple of hours while a complicated chronograph I haven't worked on before in which the case needs a lot of work also could take a day. The best part of working on vintage watches is however that I get to see such a massive variation of movements and watches, not only 2824, 2892 and 7750's... 😁

    Very good videos, that you can enjoy irrespectively if you're an experienced repairer or just a novice. Very well done!
    Here in Sweden Certina was rather large as a brand, so I have a relationship to them. I heard they were also big in Spain, whic I cannot verify, though.
    The reason for having a split stem on the DS's is, that since the movement is flexibly suspended and the Crown is screwed down and fixed, a normal stem would or could break when the watch isexposed to a shock. The split stem is the answer to that problem

Certina as a brand would certainly deserve to be well recognized. Another user also commented on the reason for the split stem and it makes perfect sense.

    Great video! I have a few Certina’s and the calibers 25-6X are probably one of my favorites. I have some experience on tinkering with them. Some of those calibers even have a jeweled barrel bridges something I don’t see often on budget movements. In my opinion, the “not-so-good” side, is the date mechanism… typical problems are connected to broken spring on the planetary changing date wheel and those are difficult to find at a reasonable price.
    Just a simple question: when you apply Fixodrop to the anchor, why it is not only applied to the pallet stones? I read some opinions and check some pictures where is claimed that fixodrop treatment can damage the roller stone. Is this only a urban myth or can be a fact?

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  Před 3 lety +2

      Hello Henrique, thanks for watching and for your comment! Yes, Certina is underrated for sure and made very high quality watches back then. The date wheel is a weak point as it is pretty much the only over-engineered part of the movement. If it's broken you are indeed a bit screwed...
      You can apply Fixodrop only to the pallet stones indeed, which is playing it very safe. I know there has been some discussion on whether epilaming the pallet fork leads to contamination of the impulse pin, but that seems a bit far fetched to me and I haven't seen anything conclusive in terms of epilame being detrimental to the pallet fork. I am considering testing epilaming the escape wheel also to see if that makes a difference. Might as well just put it into the little basket with the pallet fork :)

    I am always a little surprised when people ask "Have you heard about Certina?" etc. I have always known Certina as quality watches from I was a child, 50 years ago. Maybe Certina sold better in Norway than other places?
    Today I am wearing a DS-2 Precidrive chronograph with an ETA 251.264 movement. 5 stepper motors, 27 jewels, less than +/- 10s/year, and capable of measuring 1/100 s (even if my finger struggle with the 1/10.....).
    OK, it's battery driven, but at that level of precision, even a quarz movement is fascinating.

    Interesting.. Mostly because I rember buying a Certina DS-2 about 15 years ago.

Basically he was doing a great job but just warned that without more extensive job he couldn't be sure if there wasn't something left there that could possibly interfere with the watch. He also said that looked like it should be worth the effort to service the movement if any problems came up.
    After that it has been running for some 6-7 years without service and sans problems as far as I know since I actually gifted it to my father and then to my younger brother which both have appreciated it, I'm sure..
