Why does this watch have two seconds hands?
Today we have something very unusual on the bench; a split-seconds or rattrapante chronograph! This is a type of chronograph in where you have two seconds hands, which can either move in sync or be split to time different events.
Join Stian for a full service and repair of this lovely Alain Silberstein limited edition as we discuss how a rattrapante works and the pros and cons of modular movements like this one!

    okay so I wanna start of by saying that I recently found your channel and am loving all of the past videos, but... the water resistance part I have to disagree with. When going on to most watchmakers websites (longines, omega, breitling...) they rate their watches for, for example, 3 atm or 30 meters of water approximately. Since the inside of any watch also has the same atm of pressure as the air around you, you do not need to make the calculation that you made of subtracting one. So then they go on to claim this is in still water blah blah blah don't submerge it because we don't want trouble if we made a mistake. But doing some actual calculations it turns out moving in water can only create a max extra pressure of about 1.3 meters. This means that with a watch that is actually protected up to 3 atm of static pressure swimming in water up to 28 meters is fine. I'm pretty sure the disclaimer is there just in case some QC issue concerning water resistance managed to slip past and they don't feel like dealing with it... or even worse if it isn't actually resistant up to 3 atm. I will admit that chemicals, hot water (vapour) or salt water might have a different impact... This all of course only works for new watches since gaskets and materials deteriorate over time, so think you are correct in saying that vintage watches should never be considered waterproof unless tested. anyway sorry for the rant, just wanted to let you know. Keep making great videos!!

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices Před 8 dny

      Thanks for your rant/comment! 😁 Yep, water resistance is a confusing and frequently misunderstood topic, which is why it's always better to be on the safe side. And I think your point about disclaimers is absolutely spot on, with manufacturers definitely covering their butts by telling customers to not actually trust what their watches say with regards to water resistance. That said, a 3 ATM watch really isn't intended to be taken down into the water, it's generally not even considered safe for wearing in the shower. To take a watch into the water you should have at least a 5 ATM rating or preferably 10ATM. But hey, I'd be very happy if you volunteer for a live experiment to take one of your 3ATM watches diving and tell me what happens! Getting some real data would be awesome :) 😊

    I agree with others that is a chunky watch and a great conversation piece but probably not for me. Great video though. I am more into the vintage style watches and about 10 years ago I got a 1970's watch on evil bay for £30GBP. It has recently begun periodically stopping and I guess it needs a service, I don't think anything is broken. I have been quoted between £150 and £180GBP for a service which is way more than it is worth. Are there any other options for me. I don't have the skills or tools to do the work myself. This must condemn a load of perfectly good watches to the trash.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices Před 15 dny

      £150 and £180 for a service is actually very low and if you get a good service for that price you should probably go for it, if the watch means anything to you. If it's all the same, then yeah... it's unfortunately how our society works these days 😔
