They were talented, smart, confident, and funny, they photographed well from every direction, and they both had great smiles. And when they smiled at each other, the audience knew it was sincere. As they became more famous ---all the fame, money and celebrity went to Sonny's head... and he became even more of a womanizer, constantly cheating on her with just about anything in a skirt. On top of that, he became even more controlling in every aspect of both her personal and business life ,too. When Bob Geffin finally pointed out to Cher that her then current contract Sonny had her signed to pretty much made her HIS performing monkey & cash cow...with *him* getting 80% of their joint earnings AND her total solo earnings (from ad modeling and other things she was doing at the time)......and that he had her locked into a contract where she couldn't do anything else with anybody else except him in charge of the project . .. it just finally got to a boiling point. She went straight to Sonny and asked him if all this was true, he admitted it was...and even though she was willing to overlook and live with all his cheating like she'd been doing for years (because they were making really GOOD money together),...... when Sonny refused to tear up that current contract and void it to where they would be splitting all the money 50/50....she decided she'd finally had enough of his shit and wanted out to go on her own. **Sonny's reasoning for getting the lion's share of the money they were making was that since HE was the one that took care of everything and masterminded everything they/she did and was the one that scripted, choreographed, & wrote everything they did....that he deserved to be paid more than she did, for her only having to show up to get photographed or sing and dance. Within months after filing for divorce...she had already hooked up with Gregg Allman as her new arm candy and media generating photo-op toy.

When making the 1969 movie "Chastity" that Sonny wrote & produced, people on the movie set talked about Cher seeing her male lead. Also, when she left Sonny at the Las Vegas hotel in 1972, she was with lead guitarist Bill Hamm. Neither were perfect..none of us are....but after watching many YT interviews by both Sonny & Cher, the love for each other before & after the divorce was real. There's a 1975 interview with Cher on Dinah Shore's show & Cher talks about how descent they treat each other as the divorce is proceeding & neither wanted Chastity to be in the middle of a bitter fight. She said that she & Sonny see each other all the time because they live 30 seconds from each other & have their lawyers take care of it while their conversations were more of a personal level. In a 1996 interview on TV show Straight Forward, Sonny talked about how he got caught up in the show business world & he apologized to his first 2 kids for not being the father that he should have been & how he allowed show business to get in the way some times. But he did love them & let them know it throughout their lives because his dad never told him or his 2 sisters that he loved them. Sonny wasn't going to be like that. I have seen interviews with both Chastity & Christie & they both loved their dad. Cher has said she likes what money buys too & I wouldn't be surprised if it went to her head too.. Bottom line. Cher said after she & Sonny had a huge blow up in Vegas ( he was cheating yet again) she told Sonny she was going to spend the night with Hamm. She said it to hurt Sonny. Cher said she & Hamm did nothing but sit & talk. Sonny wasn't just a terrible adulterer (he even moved his girlfriend Connie Foreman into the home where Cher & Chaz lived) but he was extremely controlling. He met Cher when she was 16 and he never wanted her to be an adult woman. Cher said it didn't bother her until she was a mother. Then she felt like a woman and wanted to be treated as such. Sonny on the other hand made all the decisions. She wasn't even given a menu at a restaurant. He ordered for her. She wasn't allowed to take tennis lessons even though he played. She wasn't allowed to listen to music at home. Cher said the first date she went on after leaving Sonny David Geffen asked her where she'd like to go to dinner and she cried. Sonny never asked her what she wanted.
