3:00. Wow. That's how you hit that note. Heather Headley doesn't hold back. I love how she sings with all her might, but with delicacy and control. An iron fist in a velvet glove.
The thing I love about her is not only the amount of emotions she puts into her performance, but the many layers in her voice. She has so many textures and tones throughout the performance, and has beautiful dynamic delivery. She’s just absolutely exquisite
I Understand I Exist obviously a performer. Musical performers are always singers, but singers are not always performers. In everything Heather Headley sings, she lives the role. She has great love toward the art form, and it is articulated brilliantly in all her performances.
I love this entire version. But her climax "it's so eeeeeasy to leave me all aloooooone with the memory" HOLY SHIT. Blows everyone else's out the water that I've ever heard. So much soul and vulnerability put into this emotional song.
Impressive voice, technique and interpretation....I love how she switches from chest to head voice and then just belts it out!! And back to head voice again. And so effortlessly. Great job.
Her interpretation of this song is just impeccable. Her delivery takes your breath and brings tears to your eyes. Its gonna be hard to find someone who can top Heathers performance.
Enlightened Femme what a bunch of racists are still in this world I just dont understand why skin colour has anything to do with it. She is a human being like you and I. The only difference is she has talent and a gift for singing and you and I do not
Who the heck said anything about skin colour? What a ridiculous thing to even mention. You seem to have comprehension issues and are not as "Enlightened" as you'd like to think......meh.
John Hill , I am trying (really hard) to figure out how you could have possibly seen Enlightened Femme's comment as racist when it was clearly a condemnation of racism. Also, don't assume someone else is untalented. Enlightened Femme may also be a singer. Heather Headley graduated the same year as I did from a neighboring school. Everybody raved about her voice to the point where I was just kind of sick of hearing about her. I was never that curious about her/it, TBH, but I am doing a little research of my own for a performance I will be giving soon, and I am comparing different styles. This is my first time listening to her. I think her voice is very powerful and it is one of the better performances I have heard. She does a great job of sounding ethereal on the "Like a flower" verse. I would say she nailed that verse more than anyone else I have heard sing it. If I had any negative remarks, it would be that she seems to get kind of a "strangled" or "choked" sound in parts. I also see her as more of a straight-up singer than a singer-actress. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more Grizabella and a bit less Heather Headley here. But yeah, undeniable talent at work here. It's kind of sickening.
I love this performance because when she says “all aloooone with the memory” you get Heather’s amazing open and straight tone vowel. So different than others and so emotional too.
this is IMPOSSIBLE to listen to...and NOT listen to over and over and over again! She's utterly amazing and THAT voice when she restrains then lets go is a national treasure!
My wife and I saw this young lady at the Civic Theater in Fort Wayne,Indiana we were so impressed we looked at each other and both proclaimed this young lady will be a star Bless Her
I quite agree with the last comment. When she sings this song it gives me goose bumps, she puts so much feeling into a really beautiful song. The best version I have heard.
To compare this performance to Elaine Paige is adolescent musical theatre criticism. Vocally this was spot on. If you have seen Heather live you will understand how she engulfs the moment with emotion and returns musical excellence. This was magic I must say. Why do we compare other musicians/ artists to others? As a kid seeing Betty Buckley sing this song was beyond moving, but this performance is just as spellbinding! HATERS WILL HATE! So keep doing your job! You betta belt that D!
+Bryan-Keyth Wilson Lets not forget about Laurie Beechman who sang it very passionately within a more melancholic state . See her performing the song when she was on the Donahue show.
You spelled Brian Keith incorrectly.😏 But to answer your question 6yrs late you must have a standard by which to go by. How do you know this is good if there is nothing to compare it to? That said, Heather crushes Buckley everyday & twice on Sunday'
@@franklinacosta3743 Agree! That's what makes art so great right! Eye beholder! Niether of us is saying that the remakes were horrible. So we at least have common ground there.🤝🏾
There are occasions where that top note is Eb. A young lady named Jodie Langel was in the first touring company produced by Cameron McIntosh. She belts out an Eb because she asked that it be in that key!
I've always loved how full, dramatic and resonant Heather's voice is. I absolutely love Elaine's version of this song and just stumbled unto this version. I am in awe... I almost forgot how amazing of a singer Heather is. The way she can control the different tones of her voice is amazing. That was probably one of the best, if not the best rendition of this song I've ever heard.
This is practically a case study on how emotion makes a performance. Memory is a song that a lot of musicians sing because it’s easy for them to make a great performance out of,at least that’s what they think. But singing the climax of this song with a smile on your face is basically devaluing the performance and showing how you clearly don’t respect the song in it’s context. It’s supposed to be a desperate plea for repentance. It’s not in any way joyful. Heather didn’t do that though. She poured her heart and soul into this song and it showed. At 3:19 you can hear her about to cry without actually crying while still making it work. Think about that. You can hear her feelings through sheer vocal dedication.
Ooooohhhh mmyyyyy goooooddddd!!!!!!!! She just slayed my entire life... Past, Present AND Future. This is the BEST version I've heard since Barbara Streisand. Wowwwww!!!!!
Oh. my. f****. God. What did I just see? She goes to another dimension when she sings, and she takes us with her in that trip. What a wonderful interpretation, with so much passion and different nuances of her (perfect!) voice. Flawless and yet so raw. So personal and yet in your face. What a woman! ♥️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Heather Headley honestly beasts every other rendition of memory for me. Her climax is just so powerful, it gives me goosebumps everytime i listen to it. Honestly amazing.
This is quite a different interpretation in terms of the vocal dynamics and ornamentation, as well as her voice type, which has a thick mezzo middle range, all of which I love. For example the “of my days in the sun” line is often sung softly and with a regular lyric soprano, so it’s quite refreshing to hear a stronger lower range. However, she also manages to make her voice delicate, such as at the beginning and end. Great performance.
Indeed! You said it! I might not have known it was Heather Headley if I were just listening. This was a different experience...still honorably delivered with her usual vocal integrity. Namesake, lift Him high always! T&T is proud of you.
It's been said Elton John wrote Aida just for her...maybe ALWeber should get cracking and write another one for her, because the world NEEDS that voice!
+John Hill Nicole Scherzinger is not the best singer of memory she didn't act it well enough and her cat movements were choppy, Kerry Ellis is better than she is and Heather is up there with her. Although everyone has their favorites and mine is Elaine Page
How hauntingly beautiful. Elaine's rendition has stood for ages, however, after listening to Heather, I believe she has absolutely set the standard for this classic.
I found this performance completely by accident when flicking channels...all I did for 4 minutes was sit opened mouthed at the talent of an artist to that point I had never heard of previously. Just outstanding and of course a Heather Headley convert instantly. 😶❤️❤️❤️
Ugly when singing, I don't think so. For me that's just soooo beautiful that you can live the song like that. She really lives her music, lives her songs and that makes it for me the best version of Memories that I ever heared. I love it and can hear and see it again and again and again!
Any criticism would be from people who don’t realize she’s performing the song not singing it. Look at how Betty Buckley sings it. She sings it as she would on stage as the character, that’s what heather is doing.
What a beautiful performance! I've heard this sung by many performers, Elaine Paige, Betty Buckley, Barbara Streisand, and this woman is just as brilliant in her rendition!!

Couldn't have said it better myself. She's a force to be reckoned with. Her voice is powerfully, enchantingly, incredibly beautiful.
BEAST. She’s seriously so amazing.
Perfect: "An iron fist in a velvet glove."
.
I decided to piggy back off of this and you, philcordova -
What about "An iron glove in a VELVET fist."
.
Honestly one of the best versions of this song. Her vocal power, control and storytelling ability is stunning.
The thing I love about her is not only the amount of emotions she puts into her performance, but the many layers in her voice. She has so many textures and tones throughout the performance, and has beautiful dynamic delivery. She’s just absolutely exquisite
Absolutely, the opening sounds like a classic musical style, while the end has gospel tones to it, especially the final “has begun”
Excellent Critique! I couldn't agree more!
This is the difference between a singer and a performer
+Calvin Cosmos you're so right. this performance is simply incredible....

Heather Headley is the most underrated vocals ever!!!
My ears are not worthy 😍

@Myles :D alpha male narcissism - nothing to be shocked at lol
So true
Heather Headley is easily one of the best female voices of our generation.
I agree. Sadly, very underrated!
Best version of the song period. The control, beauty, raw emotion. This solidified her as truly one of the best.
Agreed
Very underrated comment
Check out Zhou Shen’s version my favorite version : czcams.com/video/cmc1aP90zGc/video.html

Agreed...
I cannot understand why people have such a big issue with Heather, she just sang absolutely amazingly. What's not to like?
Her skin color, unfortunately. :( It's very sad because she's beautiful and talented.
What the hell does her skin have to do with anything??
Enlightened Femme what a bunch of racists are still in this world I just dont understand why skin colour has anything to do with it. She is a human being like you and I. The only difference is she has talent and a gift for singing and you and I do not

Her rendition of this classic can not be matched by any living human being. Absolute perfection.
I agree
I Agree..... and the version of th awesome singer Suzan Erens
GOOSEBUMPS THROUGH TO MY KIDNEYS... Oh my word. I am so obsessed with this woman. Her rendition of 'True Colours' is my favorite ever XXX
That’s just ridiculous. That’s not even human. She is goddess level.

More like international treasure

Excuse me while I collect myself from the puddle of tears I just became
Come on !! I replayed 3:02 like 20 times , wtf ! Did ya'll fucking hear this shit !?? AMAZING .
Whenever I want to let my emotions run free I binge watch Heather Headley videos. Goosebumps and tears falling out of my eyes. She is perfection.
The low notes were as fabulous as the high ones. Watching this calmed my soul the same time it stirred it. Thank you.
Hands down the best rendition I have ever heard of this song. Breathtaking
Daniel Harper agree!
This is PERFECTION from the first to the last note!
The moment she sings "I was beautiful then" I just start crying "you're always beautiful Heather!!! Waaaaahhhh!!!"

This may be my favorite performance of the song. I love the the way she held out alone and emphasized days at the climax. This woman is a queen.
YES!
Can't believe I've never seen this version. I'm floored...and genuinely tearing up.
I HAVE WATCHED THIS LIKE TEN TIMES!!!
Magical I don't compare just take her performance for who she is, beautiful.
What can she not do? Like she's actually flawless
No doubt. I've been a fan of this woman since my mom bought first CD This Is Who I Am. In fact, I was thinking Heather should do a Disney album
I cried when I first saw this, At a coffee shop. On a Saturday. People we’re looking. Didn’t care.
Beautiful!!
Im so extremely fascinated by the control she has, the emotion and the power she carries in her voice. She truly is a legend.

Her ALOOOOOONEEEE gave me perpetual chills!!!!!
3:00 You literally can't hit that note better than that, wtf, queen
I grew up listening to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Heather's rendition of this song is by far the most passionate version I've ever herd.
