    To be fair, aren't the Fantastic Four in the comics more like "super explorers" more than Superheroes? They help whenever they can and stop some villains, but they are among the most "passive" heroes there are. Compare them to the likes of Spider-Man who constantly patrols the city in search of crime, the F4 most of them just chill.

    • @twofacetoo75
      @twofacetoo75 Před 2 lety +202

      Exactly. Speaking as a genuine fan of the comics... yeah, that's pretty accurate. I'll admit they do still bum around their apartment a bit too much for me to call the 2005 film ACCURATE, but yeah saying 'why don't they fight crime' is really the wrong attitude
      They're more suited for cosmic-level threats, like Annihilus or the Inhumans or just a strange science thing like a black hole appearing above New York. They're way more explorers and rescuers than actual superheroes, which is kind of why I like them so much.

    • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
      @MoostachedSaiyanPrince Před 2 lety +78

      Yeah, a lot of the times they get involved in fights, It's because the threat is big enough that they have to step in and help, or the person behind the attack is attacking them specifically.

      The fantastic 4 share more dna with dr who and lost in space than heroes like superman. A good FF story asks the question "where or when are we going next and what new thing are we gonna find out there". Its scifi with heavy familial themes and slice of life. The A story is finding a hidden futuristic city in Africa, Atlantis, sentient planet, extradimensional bug dictators, litteral gods and the B plot is Johnny Storm getting over a cold (not a real story but you get the idea)

  • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
    @MoostachedSaiyanPrince Před 2 lety +483

    Yeah, the fact that the Fantastic Four don't go around fighting crime is actually pretty accurate to the comics, as far as I can remember. A lot of their stories come from encounters they have while they're exploring space, other Universes, parallel dimensions, and alternate realities. Most of the time they get into fights on Earth it's due to either people directly coming after them, usually villains like Doctor Doom, or from world ending threats they can't ignore, like Galactus. They're probably the most reactionary super heroes in comic history. At least out of the ones I can think of.

    The first two F4 films are guilty pleasures of mine. They were lighthearted flicks that looked at a different aspect of superheroes. I like that it addresses more mundane issues that we never see in other films, like dealing with celebrity or merchandising toy figures, etc. It actually sets it apart from most comic book films. Fantastic Four 2015 was not Josh Trank's fault,he was under a lot of pressure by Fox, and the studio was making rough cuts to the film as well. He went to Twitter by typing in that he made a "140 minute cut of the movie but Fox removed 33 minutes of footage, and knew this version will never see the light of day. Oh, well. That's reality for you." He vowed that he will never direct another superhero movie ever again.
    Kate Mara stated how disgusted she was on how Trank was treating her on set and threatened to have her fired. Trank was yelling at the cast and crew for not doing a good job in any of the scenes.

      Even if FOX had done a loyal interpretation of the Fantastic Four, it would have ended up looking like a low-rent version of the Avengers.
      The fact of the matter is that the Fantastic Four are so foundational to the Marvel Universe that any continuity where they are divorced from the main Marvel Universe is just a crime. X-Men avoided writing itself into a corner for years because they had hundreds of characters and the concept of mutanthood to deal with. Fantastic Four doesn’t have this luxury.

He even skipped his wedding because he knew that if he married, his wife would be hunted. A brave sacrifice for him at the cost of his heart. What's sadder is that Reed is one of the smartest men on earth (alongside Xavier, Stark, and Hank Pym), yet in the comics he always focuses on his inventions, and even when he does find a cure for Ben, he guilt trips him back into the Thing. What I'm saying is. Thing aka Ben Grimm, is a tragic hero who may never find love, but is ok with that even if he knows that he will never be able to have his own family

    The most memorable moments of the FF literally have nothing to do with action, fighting, or doing some crazy feat of strength. They usually involve Mr. Fantastic and Dr. Doom monologuing about how the world is shit and whoever is speaking at that moment is the one who has the best idea as to how to save it. I'm actually very serious about that.
    - Dr. Doom has insane plan
    - Reed Richards finds out about it
    - Both of them have a conversation while Sue Storm sits in the background (usually invisible) waiting for her moment
    - Ben is somewhere fighting the Hulk or some other meme worthy thing while yelling his singular catch phrase
    - Johnny Storm is having a bromance with Peter Parker as they make jokes about uncles getting robbed by muggers. (Real thing that happened)
    - Monologue finally ends, Sue Storm does "something" and Dr. Doom is defeated while Reed looks "victorious" and says something that "outsmarts" Dr. Doom
    - Then Disney gets pissed Fox has the rights and sends them all into a portal never to be seen again until they got the rights back.
    Now rinse and repeat this and you have the essence of what Fanfourstic are. Don't get me wrong, I love the FF, but it does get pretty formulaic at times. Oh and insert some multiversal thing with another Reed Richards who's a total dick, oh and Dr. Doom "bum bum buh!" is god or something.

    Remember when Fant4stic announced they'd be changing Doom's name to "Victor Domashev", and had to change it back because of the backlash? I'm kind of of two minds about it. On the one hand I guess it's good that they at least kept the names intact, even if his is pretty silly. But on the other hand, tonally a character with a name like "Von Doom" seems really out of place in such a painfully serious movie. So more than anything else, this just highlights how they were aiming for the completely wrong tone with that movie.

    Without even having to compare it to Josh Trank's 2015 reboot of the Fantastic Four, I thought this movie was quite well made, especially in terms of the CGI, special effects, music and faithfulness to the source material made by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Silver Surfer's character development really saves the movie. When he first shows up, he causes a lot of trouble for the Earth by creating craters and knocking out electrical infrastructures. I'm thinking he did all this either to get Galactus's attention sending the message he found another planet with ORGANIC energy for him to eat and/or is creating holes upon the earth so that Galactus can sink his teeth in without problems. It also turns out that Silver Surfer is doing all these things out of fatalism and the belief or ideology that he's been enslaved to Galactus rather than fanaticism or hatred towards humanity. Then the Fantastic Four (or at least Sue) convince Surfer to save the day not with her super powers, but with her super compassion and kindness. And so, being touched by what he learned from Sue, Silver Surfer decides he does have the choice to mutiny and wipes out Galactus and saves the Earth, even at the cost of his own life believing he'll die if he tries to wipe out Galactus with his own surfboard power. But then we see that he did survive his own blast to kill Galactus and now he can go home free. But because of how the writers chose to make Silver Surfer the only dynamic character willing to become a much different person as a result of the plot, The Thing, Mr. Fantastic and Human Torch all really have no important role in this movie other than to provide dialogue.

  • @Cephalopod51
    @Cephalopod51 Před 2 lety +5

    The best adaptation of the Fantastic Four for me is perhaps the 1994 cartoon. Even when it's unintentionally hilarious and melodramatic, it got me interested in the F4. That show introduced me to the Puppet Master, Doctor Doom, the Inhumans, the Hulk, and lots more characters. It even had a cool episode involving the Black Panther, voiced by none other than Keith David. When I saw the trailers and promo material for the films, I just didn't find them interesting or good. Not even when i finally saw scenes from the actual films.
    The sad thing about the first two films is that Mr. Fantastic was played by Ioan Gruffudd, who played Horatio Hornblower in the made for TV film series Hornblower, which was a really good series. When I saw him in the F4 films, it felt like his talent was wasted. (Though to be fair, he was also in 102 Dalmatians, which was even worse than his F4 films). The other actors also felt wasted in what could've been better.
    The 2000s, particularly the period between 2004-2007, was a weird time for films. On one hand, there were still really good films that came out which took audiences by surprise, and helped define that era of filmmaking. At the other hand, there were also big budget action films that, despite some good scenes, were so badly written and so badly executed, you wonder what the studio heads were thinking (or what they were not thinking).
    Superhero films around that time also suffered from unfocused development and weird creative choices. The Spiderman and X-Men films had mostly good qualities, and even they went off into strange tangents which still don't make sense to me. I had not seen the Blade films, but they also seem to be unfocused based of NG's reviews. Superman Returns and Constantine also made their own share of odd choices, despite some parts I liked. I love Batman Begins, even though I agree with criticisms that it could've been better.
    It wasn't until Iron Man and The Dark Knight that filmmakers tried to up the ante on superhero films. Both films managed to get audiences to view superhero films in a new light in different ways: Iron Man with its sardonic wisecracking humor, and Dark Knight with it's operatic crime thriller feel. It wasn't until The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy that Marvel films upped the ante even further in terms of combining action, drama, and comedy, The current Marvel films (though not all) proved that you can make a film serious, hilarious, and compelling all at once with the right writing, actors, directors, and execution.
    It's only a matter of time till F4 gets adapted into the MCU. The F4 comics already have elements needed for a good film: it just needs the right writers, director, and cast to make it work... Though it would also be interesting if they somehow referenced Mr. Fantastic defeating Magneto with a wooden gun from the 70s F4 cartoons.

    My biggest problem with these movies isn't so much to Fantastic 4 as it is Doctor Doom. I'm not the biggest expert on the Fantastic Four since I don't read Comics that often but from what I do know Doctor Doom is a man who combines magic with science and believes that the only way to save the world from impending doom (Yes that pun was intended.) is if he ruled it. That makes him an interesting character because it puts him in a morally gray area. And then most of his more evil actions is mostly Center on the Fantastic Four because he has a deep-seated hatred for Reed. Here he's just evil. And while I do think the critic does nag on his name being Doom way too much because that is the name of the character in the comics, the films does go over the board in trying to make him evil and want to conquer and or destroy the world.

      Yeah, these movies are by no means fantastic beyond their names, but they at least are accurate in the sense that the Fantastic Four don't just go around stopping random street crimes. Most of their adventures come from them exploring other planes of existence. A lot of the time they help people it's pretty similar to what happened to the ferris wheel in Sliver Surfer, and most of their fights come from either people attacking them specifically, or world ending threats like Galactus showing up to put humanity on the endangered species list. You will never see Human Torch stopping a purse snatcher unless said purse snatching occurs while he's hanging out with Spider-Man or something like that. Outside of that, they spend most of their time hanging out with each other in the Baxter Building. Same thing goes for Iron Man too, except without the family. I don't see HIM stopping armed thugs from hitting a bank, unless they got a hold of old Stark weapons or something like that. Come to think of it, you can also say the same for most of the X-Men, The Hulk, and a couple of others. Like, they'll still stop crimes in progress if they're right there, but there's plenty of Marvel heroes that don't actually patrol the city to stop crime.
