Palestinians in Israel fear oppression in the wake of October 7 | DW News

- Since the Hamas terror attacks on October 7, Israeli police say they have arrested dozens of Arab citizens on suspicion of incitement and support for terror on social media. Authorities say they have adopted a "zero tolerance" policy against posts deemed to express support for Hamas. Many of those arrested, though, claim they were just expressing their identity, or solidarity with civilians in Gaza.
About a fifth of Israel’s population is made up of ethnic Arabs. They have Israeli citizenship and many identify as Palestinians. Our Special Correspondent Aya Ibrahim met with members of the community in Nazareth.

can you raise Israel flag in West bank or Gaza ?
Lol most part of the west bank is occupied
A critical thinker, you won't be liked by the pro-palestinian community I believe.
Israel did that quite a few times already. And of course this is not an even comparison. If you know about what is happening there for years and years. Israel is occupying land illegally and building illegal settlements on a land that doesnt belong to them in the West Bank and treating the palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza like second class human beings.
You shouldn’t raise an occupying force flag any where in the world especially in Palestine
@@tahagalal9276 He says, as he presents the quran proudly in north africa.
Nice case of people taking a political stance but refusing to deal with the consequences.
I have to say that posting a picture of your victory with a Palestinian flag the day after the massacre of 1200 people is at least insensitive if not offensive.
You later say it's a win for your shakshuka, well I can understand why others didn't see it that way....
Ethics aside, being 'insensitive' is not a justifiable cause for arrest, suspension from school and the dismantlement of your entire life.
We can debate whether or not her wording was 'sensitive' or not, but the truth is that this poor girl has had her life ruined because of a single social media post that she believe was made in private to her friends, a group of about 20 people - not for the entire world to see and misinterpret.

Free speech.
yeah it does unfortunately seem like she was celebrating the attack, but should still not cost her her education. A democracy has to be able to accomodate even those with animosity towards it's own existence and only restrict them when they incite or plan crimes.
Stop playing possum, girl. You knew what you were doing with that celebratory post the day after the attack.

Every Arab Palestinian in Israel is aware of the signifigance of showing support for Hamas. Have you ever called any dish "victorious" and placed a flag next to it? Do you really think many people call their cookiing "victorious" ever? And what coincidence to do that on Oct. 8th, the day Hamas supporters were giving out sweets in celebration all over the world.
This is no translation problem.

Amazing to see that the interviewer does not ask this student what is her opinion on the events of October 7th. If she denies this post as representing joy of what has happened, it is only justified to ask. The general atmosphere at october 8 in Israel was already a climate of war
It's sad 😢. War is bad
I agree with the student that she has a right to education, but there are parts of her story that don't add up IMO. She posted "SOON we will be eating the victory" for a meal that was already prepared. Unless that post was an invitation to join her for the meal just before they were to start eating on Oct 8, then the context of the post doesn't match her story. The special correspondent could have asked if it was an invitation and when the post was sent in relation to the meal.
And if she posted that on social media with the intention of it being private, than "we" in the context of her story implies the people invited to eat it. But if she posted that on social media beyond the circle of those invited to eat it, than "we" in the broader context means the Palestinian people, which would explain why she attached a flag emoji. You normally don't have to advertise what nationality you identify with when inviting your friends to dinner. I'm assuming they know she is Palestinian.
And she may be a bad cook in her own opinion, but the food pictured in the post looks like a person with cooking skill prepared it.
But this is the underlying problem with the conflict that was started for the wrong reasons more than 7 decades ago. It has complicated, and in many cases destroyed the lives of generations of beautiful young people like the student interviewed. The whole thing is just complete madness and unjustifiable. All this conflict accomplished is taught us how to hate!
No one "has a right to education". Education is a service provided by the labor of other people. When someone has a right to other people's labor, that's called slavery.
Thats a lot of mind games to justify a police state and thought crimes

Most of the Arab people I know who have (or whose parents had) Israeli citizenship don't refer to themselves as "Palestinian". My impression is that only a minority of young people from Arab-Israeli families choose to self-identify as "Palestinian", mainly as an edgy political statement. But as a general rule, "Palestinian" and "Israeli" are seen as mutually exclusive, at least among those over the age of 30, because dual Palestian & Israeli citizenship is not really possible.
