I like how they made her appearance almost "villain-like" which makes you feel like she'll be an antagonist. But they didn't go with that direction at all, and she shows that she actually cares much for Ming and her family.
The Grandma remain me to Vlad from Hotel Transylvania 2😅
shes just really strict like Ming Lee
She’s just the average Chinese grandma, they always have this menacing strict aura to them
ikr
pretty strict
"4 is the worst number" True, in Chinese 4 sounds like the word for death so they avoid it as much as possible. Most buildings in China don't have a "fourth floor" on elevators. I'm pretty sure it's the same for Japanese as well.
and korea
Ohh I didn’t know that!
yeah in Japan there are 2 pronunciations of 4, one being Shi. Shi is also the kanji for death. But I mean I’m not sure about the floor things because there’s more than one way to say 4
So does that mean children who are 4 years old are pretty unlucky?
@@thewanderer6196 I can confirm my apartment doesn’t have a fourth floor or any floor that has four in it
I love the grandmother is composed and kinda strict but doesn’t put her family down. I really like Wu and her design, it’s really good. 💕
Unlike Abuela.....
@@Secretly.Ris.Drawing I worry for you
She does put her daughters and others down I believe? Even in this collection she pecks at the aunts, and she actively disaproved of Ming and Jin's relationship to the point of triggering Ming's first panda transformation. It's heavily implied Ming's treatment of Mei is a reproduction of her own childhood with her mother.
That's not to say she's awful or doesn't love her daughter. We see at the end she cares and even seems to realise the impact of her own parenting on her daughter, even if she's not as open at acknowledging it.
She emotionally manipulates
Why does the tallest aunt look like the babysitter from the cat in the hat? 💀
Can we talk about how Ming and Mei's Grandma are so damn fine? They both look gorgeous for their ages. But Ming has a more fiery personality while the Grandma is all serious and classy.
Exactlyyy!!
Wait what is this a live action
Its normal asian trait
@JENNITA B.O i guess i will never escape these bots
@Beanie Demon its true tho, modt Asian adults still look young even tho they're old
0:18 she was under the assumption that Meilin couldn't control her emotions (specifically anger just like Ming) and had to transform to the panda to feel good but little did she know at that point in time Meilin had already mastered the art of turning to and from the panda at her own will.
Wow..thank you
thank you, this helped me understand that a bit more because I was kinda confused on that part (0:18 - 0:21)
@@JoeLoquacious shut up bot
I interpreted the scene as Wu being like Mei when she was younger, but was successfully pressured/shamed into giving it up.
Many women grow up being told that they’re too emotional, and are often told to keep that part of themselves hidden. You can see this external shame reflected in how women who have lost their composure in the public eye were treated (ex. Britney Spears). Its also something touched upon in Bojack Horseman, when Honey Sugarman is lobotomized for acting out from her trauma.
It’s important to keep Wu’s age in mind. Across any culture, strictness about tradition truly gets tighter and tighter as you go up the generational ladder. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was shamed terribly for expressing herself and enjoying the panda.
And who knows, maybe she tried to be better for Ming, but ultimately didn’t have the emotional resources to do so.
@@kingskeltal5228 I agree with you, because maybe there was a long line of trauma passed down from each mother, expecting their child to be perfect and to seal their panda inside of the keepsake. And when it was Meilin's generation she finally broke the cycle because she remembered all the good memories with her friends being in her panda form and she decided to keep it. Her mother was like Meilin but a bit more shy. She wanted to keep her mother proud and wanting to impress her, and when her grandmother asked her how this happened she couldn't hold in her anger anymore. She got mad at Meilin because she wasn't able to be like her. So I feel bad for Ming. I'm so glad that they had a happy ending :)
mei mei's grandma is literally the definition of material girl
yeah she's the Queen ✨💅
Cringe asf seriously-

You should see the edits when the aunties and grandma enter the house with that song. It fits fucking perfectly lol
When I first saw her I immediately thought she was going to be that mean evil grandmother character, but she turned out to be the exact opposite. Strict but very caring.
I think that’s a common trait of Chinese grandmothers. My brother married into a Chinese-American family, FYI.
Sometimes that's how Asian parents caring a child especially grandma..but you know not all strict people is eveil, right?
@🍜supermie🍜 Lol I'm Asian so I totally understand the feeling! Sorry if there's a misunderstanding, but I didn't mean to say that strict automatically means they're evil. I just meant that I thought she might be like Cinderella's evil stepmother or something.
@@quackson3018 yeah i know its okay, sorry if i sound rude too..i just say it cause why not i guess.. sorry about that
Yeah seems like a long line of concealing emotions was passed down thus why Wu is very strict and passive aggressive but well meaning lol
You know a Chinese person directed it when mei's grandma wrapped the panda fur she found in her handkerchief. It's exactly what the queen or the concubine usually do in Chinese dramas (the one that meilin and her mother watch while making dumpling) when they found something sus and use it to accuse other ladies. It add "drama" and it's so funny 🤣
I love how Disney gets stuff like this that most of us wouldn't even notice right. They got people from the cultures in the story for Moana and some other movies to get the culture right and the people from those cultures appriciate it and they get to tell a richer story.
I dont understand
lily got her iconicness from her mother
and ming got her strictness also from her mother💅💅
That last line is Cantonese. It means “Oh shit” or directly means “Shit we dead”. Really didn’t expect that lol, freaking choked when I heard it at first.😂
it's not exactly the meaning of oh shit, more like "oh no" or like "oh god no-' I'd say :) (coming from someone who uses Catonese on a daily basis)
in 0:52 , grandma says a line in cantonese "哎呀 死啦" which translates to become "oh no we're doomed" when mei's mom transforms into a red panda

i love that she was strict BUT i dont consider her evillious. She user her trauma to ACTUALLY try to protect every woman in her family and not act like "move away kid, you are shaming the last name"
Even the shaming the family name angle might come from trying to protect the family. If one person is bad it reflects on everyone, but yeah glad they had them work on that generational trauma and come to an understanding. A more compassionate take for sure.

@@0rXata_then why would meimei call her aunty and not cousin?

For those curious. Four is read as si in Chinese which sounds very similar to death (shi) so we get so superstitious that we won't even have 4th floors in buildings.

So Luke if yoy had 4 kids would they Is immediately get a 5th child?

Did anyone else think she was a villain at first
She had the appearance and introduction similar to one

SHE LOOKS SO GOOD OMFG
You know it’s interesting that people call Mei’s grandma a Material Girl considering the possibility that she probably got her panda during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. You know, that time when anything Capitalist, Imperialist or just Non-Mao was to be eliminated. Just saying there's a lot of implications if we look deep enough.
This is actually an interesting theory!
Judging from the family’s mother language - Cantonese, we can know that they’re either from Guangdong (which is a province of China) or Hong Kong, and there’s a high chance of being from Guangdong according to the cultural features depicted in the movie.
Since Mei’s mom is probably in her 30s in this movie set in 2003, which means she were born around the 70s, which is when the Cultural Revolution was starting to end.
As there used to be these feudal and patriarchal traditions in the Chinese society where woman must marry and give bzirth in a very young age (can be as young as 15,16), it’s actually possible that Grandma Wu gave birth to Ming not long after having her teenage years. (Maybe her panda transformation happened around the mid 60s?)
Unfortunately, that was exactly the time when the Chinese Cultural Revolution happened, it was infamous and was called a “Ten year purge”. China was like a hell in these years : the Great Chinese Famine, the homicide of Intellectuals and Rich people,
millions of students and child shaming and taking the lives of their own teachers, sometimes even parents. All of these cruel, gruesome and disgusting behaviours were all initiated, even normalised in the name of preserving the new idealism by purging the China traditions.
So yeah, Mei’s grandma had to endure in a living hell when adapting to her new-found panda power, which is really impressive.
No wonder why she moved to Canada.
Thank you for giving everyone a new look into this movie, it’s insightful :)
Sorry if this comment seemed too long, I’ve been learning materials related to the Chinese Cultural Revolution and I wanted to share what I know here!
Someone who actually knows about China’s history under the Communist Party? I’m impressed, Juan. ✨🤩
That’s a pretty amazing concept, the idea that Mei’s grandmother got her panda during some of the worst years of Communist rule - but couldn’t use that power to protect her family. Given that the Chinese Communist Party was also determined to eradicate Chinese culture, Sunyi and her story would be enough to get you and your family killed in the worst way.
The CCP was bent on destroying every element of traditional Chinese culture, too, right down to the family itself. That’s why Mao turned children against their parents. Preteens Mei’s age reported their parents for any “evil” opinions or even owning something “Western” like an old bottle of perfume in the attic, and often participated in the humiliation, torture, and execution of their own mothers and fathers. Whole families were sent to camps to do slave labor on starvation rations, and many never returned.
And that was a few years _after_ Communists created the “Great Leap Forward” famine and caused the deaths of more than 40 million people. Which was also after the Communists murdered “capitalists” when they took power.
(To say nothing of their own imperialist conquests and colonization of Tibetans, Uyghurs… You get the idea.)
In other words, there’s a lot of real generational trauma, healing, and family themes to explore if Disney wants to represent Chinese and Diaspora families. Even for a PG audience, the way “Encanto” represented Colombia’s civil war.
Unfortunately, as long as Disney remains desperate for a Chinese market, there won’t be so much as a whisper of those truths from them.
