Painting Feathers in LAYERS (Best Way to Paint Feathers)

- Painting feathers in layers, using watercolor, is something that I ALWAYS DO, no matter the subject I am painting.
In this video, I share the early layers involved in painting the chest and tummy of a bird, and the reasons why I work with dark colours for light feathers! It seems completely bonkers, but it certainly works, and at the same time it creates the three-dimensional shape and form of the bird too. Without spending time on the layers underneath, the bird tends to look flat and lifeless, indeed they are equally important as the last details that you add.

Thank you! Iâm so glad Iâve found this channel! Your paintings are so detailed and beautiful, thatâs a lot to learn from. Iâve painted a bird recently, a dove, but not with so many details. The real challenge there was to show the pink and green shine on itâs neck
Thank you so much Natalie. Yes, trying to achieve those iridescent colours within some birds such as Dove, Pigeons, Pheasants and many more, can be tricky to get right. Use your bright colours first for those areas. Paul đš
beautiful great video Paul
Many thanks Alan. đ
Your featherwork is a labor of love! I like your brush hacks, too!
Thank you Amybeth, I do like painting feather and fur of course. đ
Itâs beautiful and a great tutorial, Thankyou.
Glad you like it Christina, thank you. đ
I have just come across your channel and I have found that your way of painting to be exactly how I want to paint, mostly birds as I am a bird photographer so i have lots of inspiration and subjects that I want to cover. I particularly like your approach to feathers that seems very achievable. Have just subscribed, so now have lots of tutorials to watch, of which i look forward to. Many thanks for sharing your passion.
Hi Vic, thank you so much, that's very kind of you to say. It's good to be able to paint from your own photographs, which I also try to do some time. I only use a Canon M50, but it does take some lovely pics. Paul đš
Sooo amazing....beautiful as usual.....but also daunting
Thank you Lori, but daunting, not so much when you take the process in small steps and at a leisurely pace. đ
Thank you so much. Love this đ
Thanks for watching Cheryl đ

Awesome painting dear
Thank you so much Punjab đ
Thank you for the teaching
You are very welcome Annie đ
Great lesson. I'm trying to paint all the fine curved lines on a Great Horned Owl's belly. Too much too soon for me. Maybe a larger paper, or give my #1 brush a trim? I tried to put him on a greeting card, ridiculous idea, I know.
You can do it Bonnie. Anything like that, try to plan it all first, think about the layers and colours you may need. Plus, I always like to test my colour out before I start the main project. But yes, a greeting card may be a bit small for such a majestic bird. Paul đš
How many layers do you have to do on feathers and fur,he most grateful
Hi, this tends to vary depending on the type of fur/ feathers, colours and the depth I feel is need for that painting. I would say usually 3-4 layers on average though. Paul đš
At 5:26, you use a yellowish paint. It sounds like youâre calling it Gambo Hue. Can you clarify the name and manufacturer? Iâd love to get some. Thanks. I love your bird, by the way.
Correct! LOL. Yes, this is the Gamboge Hue with a touch of Burnt Umber mixed into it. Thank you for watching. Paul đš
@@TheDevonArtist Great. I just ordered some. Thanks!
