Triggering with Zularic Repetitor & transposing with Pamela’s New Workout | Modular patch breakdown

- This patch breakdown looks at how to combine rhythmic triggers and voltage offsets to create a complex four-part harmonic groove from a single note (as demonstrated in my previous jam video: • Deep techno with Zular... )
The key ingredients here are Noise Engineering’s Zularic Repetitor, which generates four channels of rhythmic triggers, and ALM Busy Circuits’ Pamela’s New Workout, which creates voltage offsets to periodically transpose some of the note pitches (as well as clocking Zularic Repetitor and triggering drums).
The four voices are Mutable Instruments’ Plaits and Rings, a Behringer Model D and a Dannysound EN129 (running through the MRG LPF and VCA). Modulation comes from SSF DivKid RND Step, AI Synthesis Looping ADSR and Intellijel VCO 1U (in LFO mode). Joranalogue Contour 1 slews the notes going to Rings, and Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 is used as a switch (triggered by PNW) to periodically swap the pitches being fed to Plaits and Rings.

Yeah, it's partly out of necessity (i.e. I could only afford cheaper and DIY modules when I was starting out) and partly because it's just nice to show what's possible with some more 'basic' stuff. I always think it forces you to be a bit more creative if you don't have loads and loads of the latest shiny gear but focus on digging deep into what you have.

I'm new to synths all together, so excuse my ignorant question. What is the rack that you are using? I'm really curious to get a small collection like this for a small desk setup. I don't have thousands of dollars for the make noise black and gold or the red means recording perfect circuit thing. I wanna make my own with used synths. But I'm so overwhelmed. I definitely want to make beats, crazy noise, and beauties like you made here. I currently have a MiniFreak and SP404 mk2. But I'm really gravitating to euro rack and non eurorack device synths. Any advice on setups and synth to look at and to point me the right direction would be cool. Keep up the great beautiful noise my friend.
I'm using an Intellijel Palette case here. It's quite a good way to get started as it has a decent power supply and a few built-in utilities (mults and summers).

Great video and use of modules. Never thought about the Zularic Repetitor but now I'll have to consider it. Love the rhythms and seem so much more fun than trying to dial the rhythms all in on my bsp.
Thanks, glad you like the video! Yeah, the ZR is very handy and quick for generating rhythm patterns, and with the offset controls it’s easy to get loads of variations. There’s also the Numeric Repetitor which is similar but I think is a bit more ‘mathematical’, rather than based on real-world music theory - all depends which set of rhythms float your boat I guess!

@@TomChurchill I’ve just watched this again and realised I need a ZR in my rack. I jam quite a lot with a djembe player so this would be perfect. Using the Euclidean function on Pam’s a lot at the moment, controlling the rotation of the rhythms and step length with external CV from Maths, which makes for some evolving interest. Cheers for the vids man, they’ve certainly helped demystify a lot of modular witchcraft over the last few months since I embarked on the journey.
I love the disting's Quant 2, which gives you two quantized notes, one a harmonised to the other and cv control. Great for similar patches.
Great shout - need to explore that a bit more! I've also now acquired an Ornament and Crime which opens up a load more multi-quantising/harmonising options...
Some nice ideas here with the way you’re creating moving arps. A quantiser would work as would a Clep Diaz but I think you’ve already got it complex enough. Nice video.
Thanks! Yeah, I now have an Ornament and Crime in the case so I've got four potential channels of quantising to play with, which should open up a lot more ideas in this vein :) And Clep Diaz definitely looks like it could be useful - will investigate further - cheers!
An interesting exercise, and one I think I can get close to replicating in my system. However, your explanation of how you got offset voltages out of Pam’s was rather sketchy- were you suggesting setting ‘level’ and ‘offset’ to the same percentage value on each channel by trial and error? I’ve always thought that it was impossible to extract exact note relationships from Pam’s as an octave is represented by values 10 apart (yes?) while there are twelve semitones in an octave. How would you precisely dial in three semitones (minor third) or ten semitones (minor seventh) on a scale of 1 to 10? Or is it not done with level/offset at all?
Great question! You're right, at first I thought it would be difficult to dial in precise semitone intervals on Pam's. The outputs are 0-5V, meaning a 20% setting for level = 1 volt = 1 octave, so you could do 5% for 3 semitones, 10% for 6 semitones, 15% for 9 semitones etc, but you couldn't easily dial in other intervals (e.g. the 7 semitones of a perfect fifth does not equate to a whole number percentage in Pam's!). However, since the firmware update a couple of years ago, Pam's lets you *quantise* the output - just scroll along to 'Quant' and you can pick from a bunch of scales. 'Ch' is just chromatic semitones. So with the output quantised, a level of 12% results in a perfect fifth, for example. Hope that helps/makes sense!

It sounded really nice. You have some good modules. Do you have an Ornament&crime? Sequins app from the original firmware would send 2 sequences which can act independently, but related, each to 2 of the 4 oscillators pitch. Endless possibilities with eurorack, if you have the hp and deep pockets.

@@martintaylor9205You could maybe try just sending the same v/oct signal to three/four of your voices, then tuning them individually to the notes of a chord (e.g. A, C, E, G), then using three or four different clock outputs of the QCD, set to different divisions, to trigger them (or to trigger envelopes that are opening the VCA for each voice). That would get you in the same kind of ballpark as what I'm doing here. I've never used the 4MS QCD (or any of the voices you have) but I believe you could use it to generate some complex trigger patterns with a bit of cross-patching between the channels...

Did you build your thru zero module? I’ve been eyeing one for a while now, but i’m picking up a tiptop buchla 258t, so not sure it’s necessary besides the fun of soldering kits.
Yeah, I built it myself - I’m not super-experienced but it was pretty straightforward, no surface-mount stuff. Does the 258t have through through-zero FM? I could be wrong but thought it just had logarithmic FM (which the EN129 also has). Very tempted by all the Tiptop Buchla stuff though!
@@TomChurchill i think aside from the extra waveform options in the dannysound module, the 258t pretty much covers the rest (not sure about linear vs log) but i was under the impression that the dannysound module was based off the buchla, minus the second oscillator. And yes! The entire Buchla 200 series via TipTop is extremely enticing!
Ah, so I think the Dannysound Cali Osc is the one that’s based on the Buchla, with the waveshaping etc. The EN129’s main selling point is the through-zero FM, which not too many oscillators have. Divkid has done great in-depth videos on both of them, which are well worth a watch! But yeah, if you’re not too concerned about TZ FM and just want a Buchla oscillator (or two!) then it’s hard to see past the Tiptop option! 😀👍

yes... nice ! But you can do the same (and better) with a sequencer like the elonquencer or the nerdseq...
Yeah, I'm definitely tempted by the Eloquencer! Not sure the Nerdseq's tracker style is quite right for the way I work, but I totally get why people love it :)
@@TomChurchill I have both... Very differents... Eloquencer is more easy to use, but Nerdseq is way more powerful ! Easy to transpose with the Eloquencer and cv1/ cv2 inputs...
