How to Check Blood Pressure Manually | Aneroid Sphygmomanometer (BP Apparatus)

- BLOOD PRESSURE:
Blood Pressure is the pressure of blood exerted on the walls of the blood vessels. It can be measured by using a Blood Pressure Apparatus, technically called Sphygmomanometer. BP Apparatus can be Mercury or Aneroid. Moreover, it can be Manual or Digital (Automatic). Here we have used Aneroid one, which has a Dial and Needle to show blood pressure readings.
SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE:
Systolic Blood Pressure or Upper Blood Pressure is the reading when you start hearing the sound of pulsations of the Brachial Artery (Korotkoff Sounds) while you are slowly deflating the BP Cuff.
DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE:
Diastolic Blood Pressure or Lower Blood Pressure is the reading when you stop hearing the sound of pulsations of the Brachial Artery (Korotkoff Sounds) while you are slowly deflating the BP Cuff.
Normal Value of Blood Pressure should be less than 120mmHg (Systolic) / 80mmHg (Diastolic).
If blood pressure values are greater than normal values, it is called Hypertension or High Blood Pressure. On the other hand, if the values are significantly lower than normal values, it is called Hypotension or Low Blood Pressure.

Sir, u r pressing diaphragm of stethoscope by your thumb ,as i have studied that there should be use of two fingers instead of thumb becoz.sometimes pulses are felt by the thumb also that means u should be hearing your own pulse via stethoscope 🩺.
Thanks for your comment. Yes, it is better to use two fingers instead of thumb.
But still you cannot hear your own thumb pulse in the stethoscope. This is because when bottom larger diaphragm side is open to receive sound / vibrations, the other smaller diaphragm side or smaller open space side is blocked to receive any sound / vibrations. We can rotate the chest piece to hear sound either from the larger diaphragm side or from the smaller diaphragm side. But at one time, we can hear sound from a single side only. The other side is always blocked because of a built-in blocking mechanism present in the chest piece of the stethoscope.

When I check my blood pressure with an analog machine, sometimes the needle starts moving before I hear the sound. Should I read the reading from the needle movement or wait for the sound?
Yes, you are right. Needle starts moving a little before you can hear the sound. You should count when you start hearing the sound. Needle movement should be ignored. Sound should be noted.

I have mercurial bp apparatus, the problem is that every time when I start pump there are some air bubbles, so I have to knock from down side then they disappear. Is it normal or issue with bp apparatus.

You should never put your thumb in the bell of stethoscope because you call feel your own pulse this can be source of error!!
Thanks for your comment. Yes it is a good practice not to put thumb on the bell. However, just keep it in mind that when diaphragm side is used, the bell side is blocked to receive any sounds. This blocking mechanism is present inside the chest piece of the stethoscope. When one side is open and in use, the other side is internally blocked from receiving any sounds.

is this more accurate than digital or both same, for home use which i shud buy. shud we hold meter at heart level or place on table. can i check myself
Digital is almost as accurate as manual one. But digital can only be used in calm settings like home. And not hectic and urgent settings like Hospital. Level doesn't matter. Readings are same.

He will need to try to know. If hearing problem is small, he can use it. Otherwise, he can use digital bp machine which does not require hearing.

Cuffs come in different sizes. If you want larger sized cuff, kindly ask your local medical store or the shops selling BP Apparatus. They sell cuffs separately too.

The way you holding a stethoscope is wrong thumb have strong pulse do you don't touch the stethoscope there because you end up recording your own .
