  • This video is presented as a supplement to the classes which I teach in Boston. This past series has been focused on developing a motif and in particular how to create mood through manipulation of lights and darks, shapes, color, and edges. In this last video I describe how the watercolor artist uses edges to create a specific mood . The use of wet on wet technique, wet and dry, and dry brush helps to create a variety of edges with watercolor. Each of these represent a different technique as well. The watercolor artist Hass to strategize on when to use went into wet, dry technique, and lost and found edges. The sequence becomes important. I asked my students to think of a watercolor plan before they even lift up their brush-this is to formalize the sequence and the technique that will be used in the different stages of making a Watercolor. In this last video I am talking primarily about Edges and at the end present sampling of images that have come out from this class. I am left with the surety that developing A motif is critical for the developing artist. Through working with the same motif over weeks and dozens of paintings the growing artist has a chance to internalize their subject, the result is a new freedom with brush and paint color and line, edges and shape. The artist feels more compelled to improvise.

Simply mesmerized as I listen to you describe creating the atmosphere...... creating a softness to the air. Amazing. You are sharing with the world your love affair with watercolor and describing not only the great joy she brings but fickle nature that at times you are at the mercy of. Having a great plan vastly increases the likelihood of a joyous result. Through your insightful and thoughtful teaching I find myself gaining more and more valuable knowledge that I will carry to journey of discovering my own love affair with the magic of watercolor. Thank you 👩‍🦳🖌️

I just found your Chanel. Have been working in botanical art and that’s where I’ll stay but you have much to teach me as your glorious tonal studies are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your inspiration and work process. It helps.

This has been an amazing series of painting videos Gary. Your hard work, analysis of your painting and the thoughts behind it have been inspiring and also enviable. One thing surprised me; that you too are subject to disappointment and failure. A lesson to me and my frustrations. Thank you very much, it's been fascinating.

Really enjoyed this. I recently have had to give up oil painting after 30yrs as a result of toxins and their direct effect on my health. Miss it so much but watching you has given me hope, I have been watching your videos Gary for a few weeks. I once painted in watercolour. I am going to try it however it is intimidating. Thanks Gary for your ability to connect.

Watching your video is always fascinating and encouraging to pick the paper & to paint, but it ends in disappointment & remains a question mark on my ability to paint. How I can overcome this.....
