For me I got into one piece through the anime. I was kinda indifferent up until we got to sanji, then I was more invested. Then once we got to Arlong park I became completely hooked on the series. I stopped watching it once I got to dressrosa because I couldn't stand the pacing. I eventually read the manga and I enjoyed it way more through the manga. I appreciated arcs like thriller bark way more. So I would say the anime really can ruin people's enjoyment, it just depends on their patience.

I didn't like Usopp at first in the anime until I reached Water 7, but I recently read Syrup Village, and I completely missed out on how awesome he is. He can't do anything against Kuro and Jango, yet he does all he can to save Kaya, and the same goes for his little crew of kids. He's awesome!
I just wish they didn't ruin his character post timeskip, his last good moments were shooting down Buffalo and Baby 5 on Punk Hazard and unlocking Observation Haki in Dressrosa. He didn't do anything in Wano. Onigashima should've given all the strawhat's a full fight against the headliners of the Beast Pirates like Ennies Lobby. I hear the same for Egghead too, I have high hopes Elbaf will change that

I’m ngl when I was going through One Piece early on, I thought it was very mediocre. Like you couldn’t pay me to sit through Orange Town and Syrup Village again. Now maybe that’s because I watched the anime early on which is known for its notoriously bad pacing, and I guess the manga is a better experience early on, but that’s just how I felt initially going through the beginning. The first arc I truly enjoyed was Baratie and Arlong Park was what made me stay and kept me invested in One Piece. I’m glad I pushed through because One Piece is now my 2nd favorite animanga

When I started watching One Piece I was hooked and started binge watching it most days. It was just easy to fall in love with these characters. It wasn’t really till the dressrosa arc where I started to slow down. The pacing got even slower than normal. That’s when I started watching it whenever I just felt like it and not just binging it. So I think the main thing is just enjoy it at your pace and don’t force yourself to get caught up. You will get there just enjoy the story and journey it’s taking you on.

As a guy who don't really like One Piece, i watched until the Ace moment. Though this was over 10 years ago, maybe i'd enjoy it more now. My first reason is as you covered, that no one dies. Takes away all the tension for me. I don't see the point of the fights or them acting as if their lives are in danger, when they obviously aren't. The tension feels fake becouse of it.
Second reason is the fights. I just didn't think the fights were that good. Compared to Naruto and Bleach, the fights in One Peace just didn't invest me that much. I did like the fight with Luffy and Usopp but other than that i don't recall any fight that hooked me. I have seen some of the most recent fights in top 10's and such and they do look amazing! But that's around 1000 eps into the show. Though again, if no one dies, it loses the tension.
While understanding that people don't die in the show, except 1 person i guess. There should atleast be more consequences for when they get damaged. One example is the Zoro "nothing happened" moment. I really liked that moment, though it kinda got ruined when he was just fine a few days later. They acted like this was a big deal but there wasn't really any consequenses to it. Compare this with Rock Lee's injuries in Naruto. You follow Lee as a criple throughout multiple episodes, feeling his dispair for not being able to fight. How much the surgery weights on him. He does end up getting back to normal but it takes a long time and he had to endure a lot during that time. Where as Zoro just had to sleep and was fine, despite the show giving the impression that this was gonna have huge consequenses.
Fourth reason is i don't like the designs of 80-90% of the characters or some of their expressions. I'm very nitpicky on this stuff with anime in general. If i don't like the way it looks, it's a big hurdle for me to get invested. The strawhats look pretty good but most other characters i'm not a fan. The proportions throw me off and their expressions. If someone is crying they're bawling their eyes out. Rather than having subtle emotions. It's way too over the top with their emotions, doesn't make them feel real and human. Though One Piece does have moments where they nail the expressions and you feel the characters emotions. It's just not very often imo.
The comedy. I most liked the comedy with Zoro and Sanji's banter and some other moments here and there. But other than that it missed for the most. Especially when it comes to Sanji and Brooke. Also other jokes that're way too repetitive. I know it's shounen but the humor often feels like it's aimed at a toddler, with how much it beats it's jokes into the ground. Another pet peeve i have, which is also in other anime. Is when all characters say the same word at the same time. Makes it feel like everyone is a hivemind, rather than people with individual thoughts. I overlook this for the most part but One Peace does this almost every episode.
With all that being said, there are elements, characters and certain moments i like in One Peace. Which is why it's a shame that there's all the issues with it, that i eventually dropped it. I really wanted to like it and was hoping for it to get better over time but i just reached my limit. Got way too repetitive and predictable. I've heard Studio Wit is gonna re-animate it, so might give it another chance whenever that comes out.

Jojo isn’t the best comparison, because it’s not really “one manga,” it’s nine with distinct beginnings and endings. Sure, sometimes those tie into each other, but you don’t need much of any knowledge of part 1 to understand part 4, and parts 7-9 are literally disconnected from that universe

While the story sometimes can get kind of formulaic, One Piece got me hooked from the start. To be fair I'm only at Thriller Bark and i take frequent breaks in between sagas to not get burned out, but OP's world building and backstories are some of the best I've seen in shonen.
So far creating deep and complex characters wasn't OP's goal. I feel like its main goal is showing this colorful, creative adventure in a massive world filled with surprises and mysteries.
But I can see why someone would say that the characters are flat. In my opinion it's mostly due to OP's length that leads to rather slow character development.
Every saga so far had a moment that made me very emotional which just shows that you don't need deaths to create emotional scenes.

don't forget about Igaram either. he should have died in that boat explosion.
i don't dislike luffy, but i am not interested in him, story is far too long and he hasn't changed enough for me. i am tired of his character. it's great when we great a break from him to focus on any other character.
i was not a fan of one piece when i initially watched it, and i even finished arlong park. it was good , but i didn't feel it was worth the investment of time because of it being a lot longer than a normal show. it wasn't until later when i came across an AMV showing characters on the brink of death and fight scenes from enies lobby. that i gave it another chance. and i eventually fell in love with it.
the story has flaws but the world building, amazing locations, and sense of adventure keep me going. there is no other manga that comes close to it in these aspects.
and then there are the emotional moments.
i find the action and especially comedy less of a reason to read the series, they are the weaker aspects of it to me.the fights are more about the emotional pay off than enjoying the fight itself a lot of the time. especially if it isn't luffy and zoro who get the most screen time in battles after some point.

Honestly all of those are non-issues. The 'slow' pacing is not the animes problem but rather a problem of the audience (the TikTok generation part of the audience to be precise). The overstimulation caused the kids to have attention spans of fruit flies and shut their brains down when nothing is happening for 2 seconds. Truly sad in fact.
The 'no stakes' nonsense can be explained with the misconception death=stakes. Stakes are built up in OP by many other means than just cheap shock value through death other shows rely on. The no one dies 'problem' is explained by intrinsic rules of OP world (durability, DF etc).
Regarding the OP characters I don't even know where to start. The show has some of the most complex and deep characters out there, character development goes through the roof as well. Now, obviously, with 1000+ characters in the show, you can't give everyone realistic personas/personalities.
OP got the hypest, most badass, emotional moments, plethora of layers, best comedy. And don't get me started on lore, world building and themes of the show. It'll be the greatest piece of fiction once it's finished. To many it is already, numbers don't lie.

Since i watched it as a kid, i’ve always enjoyed One Piece. The Characters, the Story, the World to explore along with the sense of Adventure, how they all come to life is such a great feeling.
When you see the web Oda has weaved for the past 27 years its incredible how it all connects, especially with the most recent arc.
I always defined One Piece as one of the Greatest JRPGs of all time. It has everything that makes a JRPG. Gain “Party Members”, Unlock New Moves, Explore New Areas, Discover Lore, Gain Allies etc…
I think the problem is the “Online” Personas Warring over whats better/mid and the rapid decline of attention spans.
    - Art Style Bad = Not Edgy enough
    - Too Goofy = Not Edgy Enough
    - Boring doesn’t get good until later = Not Enough Fights spawning every second
    - Too Many Episodes = Lack of Attention Span, wanting to skip to the current Sakuga content and being unable to appreciate everything else but the Action.
    - Its Trash = My Favorite Anime is a Rival to this Anime and no matter the similarities, not allowed to compliment the “Enemy” (Ex: Naruto vs One Piece, My Hero vs Jujutsu Kaisen etc…)
    - Main Protag is a Bitch = Not allowed to display emotions unless its Rage
While this is what i have gathered when it comes to people who hate One Piece, most of this applies to other Anime/Manga, Especially those who mention any of these complaints while not giving the series an actual shot and is just regurgitating the excuses they heard online.
X for example, probably the most Toxic thing that is killing the Culture of Anime/Manga today, Reaction Channels of Various Anime that literally soar past points and moments, explanations etc… (its baffling how much people don’t pay attention or don’t care about anything without action, cringy at times…) Talk about the Fights in JJK and then watch them struggle immensely to tell you about the plot, the goals of certain characters, characters that don’t fight lol etc…
And i definitely don’t wanna get into the disgusting Wars EX: JJK is Mid, Sakamoto is Peak, Boruto is Trash, My Hero could never etc… or even the constant Toxic Powerscaling. EX: “Sakura can solo the entire Bleach Verse, these people are like 30+ talking like this.
I don’t expect people who act like this to genuinely appreciate something like One Piece or even other Anime/Manga for that matter. Their Toxic Bias makes them irrelevant.
Sadly, i believe its an incurable Cancer that has struck the Anime/Manga Community.

Dude, in my opinion, for those people decided to watch anime over reading the manga, they can't complaint how long it is or the pacing is terrible. They chose their poison and they have to live with it.
When started One Piece, I found a volume belonging to my younger brother at my parent's house. I think it was Enies Lobby, and eventhough I didn't know any characters, I found the story resonate with me, I started to watch the anime from episode 1. It took me few days till I realise, I don't have time for this. So I started to read from chapter 1, saw the differences not just in pacing but in story telling especially Baratie arc where Zeff cut his own leg so that Sanji won't starve to death.
It took me less than 10 minutes to read a chapter compare to 30 minutes for an episode. If I miss anything, I can always read the manga page, instead to wait a scene to play out. Second time reread One Piece is much easier too.

  • @stathorinoakenshield6331

It is just really, really, really fucking long and they are milking every episode nowadays with completely unnecessary flashbacks and they reuse footage like 10-20 times between like 15 episodes. If i ever see the happy people celebrating and having fun at onigashima fair one more time (its been like 20 times already) i will loose my shit.

One Piece is the best selling manga (and comic book) series of all time, has a 20+ year long anime, 14+ movies, multiple stage plays, themed restaurants, video games, spin-off manga, at least one novel, a surprisingly well received live-action version, and a whole new anime being helmed by a different studio.
"Everyone says One Piece is boring" is simply not true at all. A loud minority may call it boring, but statistically it's not even close to everyone.

The reason we dont like Sanji is cos of the heart island stuff and the okami stuff. His Respect Women juice was charming for the most part but why does he have to be transphobic?
In fact... He is a *horrible* character in New World right up until Whole Cake Island where he's finally written as a character again and not just a joke.
I think all told Sanji is a better character than Zorro in new world but Sanji has a lot of Ls for each of his Ws, both in-universe and writing wise. Zorro is all W all the time in universe but lacks personality, to the extent people argue about whatever few lines he has and whether it's consistent (see recent update where he spoke coldly of Vegapunk's death). So it really didn't take much for me to like Sanji more than Zorro.
I really like Usopp because he's a true coward, but he always tries anyway, and he accomplishes great things exactly because of the kind of person he is. I think it's delightful whenever Usopp gets a fight. What's odd is he's the only Strawhat in the past... three arcs since Dressrosa who has NOT had any kind of good fight. I'm holding out for him in this arc.
