    Hello Viewers! This short video clip is all about upgrading or converting loose bearings found mostly in vintage bike to a SEALED or CARTRIDGE one. The bearings are 6903 2RS which I bought through Shopee. You may see below shpee links to know where I bought bearings and bottom bracket spacers.

    Cool experiment. My personal experience though is that loose bearings (held in a cage), packed with the correct type of grease, and properly adjusted, are usually smoother rolling and have less friction than sealed bearings (or a completed sealed bottom bracket assembly). You've swapped the work of re-greasing bearings for just swapping in a new sealed bearing units... but either way, in the future, the mechanic is still required to service the bottom bracket. All bearings wear, and eventually wear out.

    • @zdravo4
      @zdravo4 Před 2 lety +5

      Exactly, I took out the balls from the cages and put them in with a lot of grease and few balls more. I set the cups properly and they spin great, much better than my XT bottom bracket on my modern bike

      I have the opposite experience. I find that sealed bearings spin more freely compared to ball bearings. Numerous videos of this exist comparing wheels that have sealed bearings and ball bearings. However, one of the big reasons I switched to a sealed bearing bb is for the weight savings.

      @7thkansascav468 Před 2 lety +3

      I used to convert all my old bikes to sealed bearing cartridge bottom brackets. After a few failures of the beaings I returned them to the original loose ball and cup bottom brackets and invested in a bottle of ball bearings for my spares inventory. I also use synthetic wheel bearing grease for boat trailers, I'm not sure if it's really any better but I feel better about riding in wet or muddy conditions.

    I feel that this is a bad idea for many reasons. The bearings you are replacing are 11 1/4" (6.35mm) ball bearings with a sealed cartridge bearing. While this hack reduces maintenance it will decrease the service life since there are less bearings in these and they're smaller so they cannot take as much load. Improperly installed, the cartridge bearings can fail prematurely since they are designed for radial loads and very little, if any, axial load. There are sealed cartridge bearings that are made to take an axial load (there's an arrow or "out" etched on them to show how to install them properly) but those are not common.
    You're needing to mount the BB cups about 5mm further out reducing their contact with the bottom bracket shell. Think about this: your entire body weight is resting on what little threads are left and if you stand while going over bumps multiply that by a factor of at least two if not more. This can lead to damaged threads on the bottom bracket shell which would make installing a new bottom bracket difficult or impossible, which would render the frame useless.
    I don't know how tight the tolerances are for the bearings sitting inside the cups nor do I know the tolerances for the bearing sitting on the spindle but I'm fairly certain that they're fairly loose. That can cause wear on both the cups and the spindle. Not sure how long this system will last under real use.
    Some crank sets use bottom brackets with short spindles and this modification would not work with them, though, admittedly, they're newer systems and the bottom brackets are probably already using a sealed cartridge system.
    As an alternative, buy a sealed cartridge bottom bracket. They're fairly cheap and they're made to work with the bearings properly. They will sit completely inside the bottom bracket shell like they were designed to do minimizing the stress on the threads of the bottom bracket.

    • @niwrad84
      @niwrad84 Před 2 lety +2

      Actually it is a bad idea since the crank spindle is not a tight fit for the bearing. I've done this kind of conversion but on hubs. The axle was damaged by the bearing since it got a loose fit (less than 1mm) now the wheels are wobbling no matter how tight the bolts is. Also you can get a brand new seald bearing bb for like $3

    • @dosgos
      @dosgos Před 2 lety +3

      The original bearings in good condition & well greased should have less friction than sealed would.

    • @jimbarron8688

      Sealed cartridge is the way to go for a BB upgrade. For under $50 you have a reliable smooth alternative to loose balls.

    i have tried it before with the bearing 3903 with my old thunderbird BMX frame. then i sent to my local machine shop to modify the caps and BB axle to fit perfectly without the need of the spacer or washer. now more than 20 years i still use the same caps and BB axle and change the catridge bearing whenever i needed or bad. it was the best from that time and cheaper too.

  • @danielhall3895
    @danielhall3895 Před rokem +4

    Sealed bearings aren't menat for use with loose bearing cup races. The bearing system in a bottom bracket with cup and spindle is meant to be a floating bearing system. The bearings themselves are not meant to be fixed in a non-moving position, which creates more friction by not doing the job of handling axial loads. You wind up having to actually do more maintainence due to quicker bearing wear due to friction because the bearings won't float in straight line anymore and will move side to side in the cartridge, because of the fixed position in the cup. This is why bearing races in loose bearing systems are rounded, including the spindle edges, which is also going to wear out the bearing cartridge, because it's not designed like a flat spindle, it has a rounded concave step meant to be an inner bearing race.

    I have been looking to do a sealed bearing upgrade on a few of my old bikes. If you’re doing a full restoration, it makes sense to upgrade components that need maintenance with newer technology, especially when it is invisible when installed. I’ll order a few spacers and bearings and convert all my old riders when I get a chance. I think the bearing size is 17mm ID, 30mmOD and 7mm wide, I might find one of my old bearing books and see if I can find something with a 5mm width, however, 6309 is a very cheap and easily obtainable bearing, so an alternative might be too expensive. Great video!

    • @CoggieBike
      @CoggieBike  Před 3 lety

      Yes, sealed cartridge bearings aren't perfect. They can be, or possibly be penetrated by external sources where they will become rusty in the inside, but of course they will perform well if you grease them up and clean your bike regularly...

    You just added more weight to the BB. That type of BB is already in the 300g range. There is a reason Shimano and Campagnolo use ball bearings with a cup and cone interface in their wheels and the BB would have the same benefits, it just spins better with less friction and therefore would last longer. You just have to properly maintain the bearings which I consider fun because I like to work on my bikes.

      In addition to this, in the past I've used a grease nipple & then also made a sleeve to line the shell. Source some plastic tubing that fits closely inside the shell. You have to experiment cutting it to the correct length, so that the cups screw in close against the sleeve. You also need to drill a hole in the sleeve & align with the grease nipple. Use the original bearings & just re-grease with a grease gun now & then. Excess grease will be forced out & must be cleaned off.

    From his example of repacking the caged (not loose) bearings, grease must very expensive where he is located. Small wonder he wants to replace his ball bearings with anything. Little to no grease is a recipe for troubles

      @CoggieBike  Před 2 lety

      Probably not, bearings are way cheaper plus you can do a DIY spacer or most of us has its own reserve spacer.
