    Most scuba divers progress up through the training ladder up to Rescue Diver, it’s probably the best course for you to undertake. It won’t let you dive any deeper, or go anywhere extra, it’s purely a course so that you can be a better scuba diver so that you and your dive group are all better. Now, I know I’m going to talk about the bad aspects of becoming a Rescue Diver, but I wouldn’t let this put you off because, and I know that everybody says this about Rescue, but it is the most rewarding course for you to take and I mean that.

      @@fishlover i swim twice a week and wouldn't consider myself very fit. I had to fight cramp towing a diver and giving rescue breaths, so i would recommend doing some training. Highlights, i have significantly increased my awareness and think my diving will improve because of this. I don't think there is any specific highlights, the whole course builds skills and knowledge.

    The key, mentally, is to go into any situation simply thinking, i'm going to do my best. What ever happens, whatever the outcome, that is all you could have done. With the benefit of hindsight it's very easy to say "oh yeah, i coul,d have done this or that instead" and those actions may have been better, but not only did you not have the benefit of hindsight at the time, you certainly have no way of knowing what the effect of different actions would actually be, because they were't actioned! So, do your best, and that's all you can ever do!

    Doing Rescue was challenging. I was't prepared enough, expecting a relaxing vacation week. But it was so worth it. Learned a lot about myself (how I act in stressful situations) and became a better diver (both for myself and others). Find a good instructor and do it!

      @Yggdrasil42 Před 2 lety +2

      @@fishlover The challenge was both in physical fitness (it's hard work to carry an unconscious diver onto the beach or lift them into a boat and in stress. Your instructor will create scenarios where things go wrong during and after a dive. Sometimes multiple. You'll have to choose who to help first and how. It's fun in hindsight but at the time it can feel pretty real.

    Rescue Diver was the BEST and most enjoyable training I've been a part of. EAPs are a part of every dive now, something that I'd never thought of prior to this course. The situation we did to find a unconscious diver was great! I had the chance to bring that diver up from 40 feet of water and tow him back to the beach. It was some seriously good training and have a new found awareness of not only myself but other divers I dive with.

    Pizza, Pizza,Pizza!!
    My favourite course. On my Rescue course I had the instructor from hell, but after passing I realised I had learnt so much and evolved.
    As a DM I've seen the bad (too soft) course where I don't think the student really learnt enough, and the good, where you see the student fundamentally change and become a better (more confident) diver.
    Again, as a DM, I loved assisting this course. There is a slight sadistic side to your role, but, with a purpose and tempered to the individual (macho man - lets see!).
    Demonstrating the skills for my AI really hammers home some of the finer points (yes I lost a weight belt and a mask which we recovered as part of a Search and Recovery).

  • @cozdiver
    @cozdiver Před 3 lety +3

    I loved the training right up there with tec training. I did loose my mask during it though, I did go back and look for it but with the viz being less than 1m it wasn't possible. I did love the search grid training scenario and panicking diver scenario, my instructor did not go easy on me with that one for sure. How often do you recommend a refresher on the whole course? I have done it twice in a 10yr span, not the CPR part we do that every year along with AED. It is a requirement of the Port Auth.

    Best course I've taken by far. It does make you be more aware of everyone else around you. One thing my instructor did that isn't part of any of the training manuals, but was still very beneficial, was to simulate an entanglement. He wrapped you in about 50' of rope in such a way that you would have to remove your kit in order to successfully disentangle yourself, and you had to do so, while maintaining your buoyancy - his goal here was to task load you. A side result of the course is I'm a lot more comfortable with just tossing my kit in the water and going in after it to put it on (key if you're ever on a live-aboard and there's a emergency in the middle of the night - make sure you've got a tank attached to your gear that you can toss in the water at a moment's notice).
    I did have to chuckle at the last bit about losing gear. I haven't dropped anything during any of my dives... except during my rescue dive when I dropped my mask and had to find it in about 6" vis because we'd stirred things up (walk-in).

    Depending 100% on the Instructor.
    When i did my RD is was boring and quick.
    But after i was helping another Instructor as a DM, and the way this guy was teaching students was amazing.
    ----
    On the other note about offending - I was assigned the buddy once who had a plug in his octo mouth peace, when i asked him to remove it - he stated that it's to prevent sand and stuff to get in.
    I told him that if i need his octo i will not have a time to remove the plug, unless he removes it - I'm looking for another buddy.

    I am considering both Rescue Diver and Advanced Nitrox Diver. Would you see the former as a prerequisite to attend the latter, or they do not necessarily have to come in a particular order? I have the opportunity to take Advanced Nitrox quite soon, so I'd do it first.

    • @leehouston4395
      @leehouston4395 Před 3 lety

      You can do nitrox course along side open water. It doesn’t even require you to get in the water. So just get that done 👍🏻

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 Před 3 lety +2

      @@leehouston4395 Advanced Nitrox is a TDI course and not the same as Nitrox though. It's a follow-up to Nitrox, in which you learn to use mixes up to 100% oxygen. It's still a mostly theoretical course though it usually includes learning to dive with deco cylinders. It's usually combined with TDI Decompression Procedures because there's significant overlap and you can save some time by doing them subsequently. Deco Pro is a more hand-on course in which you use your Adv Nx knowledge and learn how to perform safe deco dives, with higher Nx mixes (like 50% O2) for accelerated decompression. It's a fun course and you learn tons about how diving affects your body.

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 Před 3 lety +2

      Rescue is separate from Adv Nitrox. I'd do Rescue first, then do a combined Adv Nitrox & Deco Procedures course as your first step into technical diving. That order is not required by the analytical Rescue mindset is a great one to have when you learn about more complex and challenging diving. Enjoy!

      @@Yggdrasil42 That makes sense, thanks for your opinion. I'd add that to dive near the depth limit of recreational diving (40 m) I'd rather have redundant equipment as well as a deco plan, instead of staying at depth for a couple of minutes, not seeing much and risking unplanned deco (as it has happened to me).

      Open Water followed by Advanced Open Water (after getting a bit of experience) should always be the first steps. Doesn't matter if PADI, SSI, SDI or any other organization. They're required for Rescue. And that's a good idea imho. The Rescue course can put you under a lot of stress and you want to be comfortable with your normal diving before making that step. Good luck!
