Hi Amanda. Thank you for this and for your channel. Your videos really helped me a lot a few years ago when I was studying my post grad. I am now qualified (CA(SA)) and I can't agree with you more. Since I finished my articles, I've moved into a Sales Analyst type of role rather than a more traditional Financial Manager/Controller Role and data analytics (mostly on Excel but also through a tool called Qlikview) have become part of my daily work. It's a really exciting time to be a CA. The roles we occupy are changing and our opportunities to add value are real and substantial. If I may add one thing, perhaps stating the obvious but, what I have found with analytics is that you only see the true strength of a tool when you need to solve complex problems with it. Ma'am , i request you bowing down to earth , please make more videos , regarding this " computer science " intervention in accounting and finance . I am currently pursuing Chartered Accountancy in india , got finals in May . I sometimes get tensed about whether i will be relevant 5-10 years down the line or not . I want to upskill but its confusing as to which specific language or course or what should be the direction of venturing into these computer sciences . I have been into internal audit in my 3 year articleship . I also have confusion as to how to choose a career line between audit and finance and pure accounts . I seem to be interested in all 3 of them . Thanks for this vid though .
A great idea - I'm working on interviewing some really interesting people in the technology space this year - some are software vendors/companies, others in the digital and blockchain assurance area :) I'll be sure to include some recommendations on what specific areas of studies the experts recommend :)
i have a bachelor in Accounting and Finance and i am recently a intermediate Python developer and when i meet people who have degree in Computer science, they would be like OMG how can you learn to code when you don't have any degree in computer science. Me: "Well news flash you don't need a degree to become a software developer, you need to be a problem solver" and i know how many excel task that people do can be automate with python so easily and also through web scrapping we dont need to copy paste data in excel and then clean all the shit for hours to get what we want. My colleagues spends hours into work and I can do their job in just few minutes. Coding is hard though specially debugging is so frustrating but as an accountant we often get into situation where we cant find a transaction that's missing or other complicated troubleshooting, so its not that kind of a new situation for us. Coding is basically can be defined as "I would rather think hard for 4 hours instead manually laboring my way out of my problem for days."

Exactly, nice reply man. I am on the same road. I graduate the most prestigious university in my country Romania for accounting. What is interesting we do learn also a lot of databases at the university, in fact, Faculty is called Accounting and Information systems. As of now, because of corona Crysis, i lost my job and looking forward to a reconversion. As I was in top 10 people from my year on IT ( SQL+ MSAcccess, Excel&VBA, Prolog, VisualBasic etc) i was thinking that returning on my old passion can help me earn the money to support my family. Python is the first is coming to my mind as I saw it has some accounting application and also data analytics. Do you have some recommendation? How long it took for you to make your transformation? PS: I love accounting and tools that help doing it faster and allow a higher understanding of it.

Thank you for sharing. I have already started learning Data Analytics on my own but for a different reason. I am age 35 International (Black American) student at a UK University, my degree programme is BSc Accounting and Finance. I actually wanted originally to have my next career as a Forensics Accountant with a focus in Audit but I got discouraged because I have been struggling with my University studies. So I started learning coding mostly on my own while I study and practice understanding more of my University studies. As a coding beginner, I want my next career to be Data Engineer. But recently I have been learning that Accounting involves a lot of Data Analytics through webinars and now watching your video. So I see that what I started to invest in myself with is greatly going to help me in my next career(s). I will look again possibly to become a Forensics Accountant in my future after I graduate from University next year.
It is great to hear that you’re getting into data analytics - it will definitely come in handy if you’re wanting to pursue a career in forensics. I’d recommend seeing if you can get an internship or summer vacation experience in audit if you can’t find something in forensics - it is an adjacent discipline ☺️ Keep at your studies and be sure to reach out to your teachers for assistance when you need it - we love to help students ❤️

I am on my final year at university economic course. Its an expansive field, which allows to engage in various types of economic related activity. Great video I have been off work due to medical, returning to school and workforce after first of the year. I have undergrad degree in Business Administration. I am taking a refresher courses on excel. I am interested in accounting and analytics. Should I pursue masters degree in Strategic Leadership Business Analytics or Masters in Accounting-which includes Accounting Analytics courses in masters program? Hi Jamy - welcome and a great question. Figures from the US recently stated firms were hiring 30% less than per-COVID - the job market is really competitive right now! However, if you’re new to the field - a great idea is to try and do Community College courses in Accounting and Data Analytics - with the potential to transfer to a 4 year college afterwards. You might be lucky to get an entry level job with a community college courses - but I don’t think with just the LinkedIn Learning courses in the current environment.
@@amandalovestoaudit Thank you for your response! That community college idea is cost effective and doable! :) I'm glad I reached out to you instead of just going forward not knowing the market. I do feel that it is very competitive anywhere right now, and to break into a new career field without any prior experience is an uphill battle with Donkey Kong being COVID at the top of that hill! I thought about starting a Master's program for non-accounting majors this year, but as good as that sounds, I'm cautious about it because of the loans I'd have to take out, especially since I haven't gotten into any accounting classes before. But I am hopeful that I'm moving in the right direction. I also sincerely appreciate you for your advice. It gives me greater perspective on my next steps for a potential career and educational pivot. One step at a time... :)

I used SQL a lot and I think Python is a good language for the future - especially for those who want to do more data analytics work, or analytics work to support audit. But like learning any new language - it is going to be tough!

Please guide, I do not anything about IT or computers, just basic Excel that accountants normally use.
Hi Abdul - it depends on what you are interested in - if it is IT, then the CIS is a good path. If you’re wanting to go into the business side - then a program that supports your interests is the way to go. I can’t tell you what your career goals are - and don’t pick a degree based on what jobs other people say are popular - you’ve got to be interested in it!
Hi AL - I guess it depends on where you want your career to go - even in the area of finance where analyzing large data sets for patterns on which trading strategies can be built is a form of data analytics.

Could you perhaps create a video on what you've seen CAs do beyond audit?😊
I've seen a lot of accountants develop skills in Design Thinking and User Experience (UX) recently and move more into consulting roles. It is a great idea for a video :)
@@amandalovestoaudit I'm guessing it's because of how so many business activities are being computerized... will read a lil more on this. It would, was looking through your content beyond audit where u interviewed a lady in Marketing and It she was inspiring in that I'd not have thought an accountant would go for it, so yes would be great to have more of those together with the auditing content where time permits of course.
The key is finding something that interests you - studying something just because their are jobs is less than optimal (but something we have to consider - you might love carving statues but there aren’t many jobs in that!)

Hi Sumeet - absolutely! We’ve always used basic data analytics like Ratio Analysis in helping us identify risks - but we could certainly do more. In response to risks - this might mean that DA allows us to test an entire population easily to identify misstatements, or search the population for exceptions more easily - then we can manually investigate.
Most firms will not have any expectations that you have experience in a specific software package besides Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel etc. If you graduate from a Data Analytics program - then they would expect something like PowerBI, Tableau, knowing how to code Python,
I mean to say I m graduated from charted accountancy program so having a certification in data analysis will increase my chances of having higher salary Although I don't have any work experience

Hi Gavrit - perhaps it is how your CV/resume or LinkedIn is put together? Does your university offer careers advice? Have you been networking with other CAs? I’m not sure what recruiters are looking for in your country - but in Australia it is partly academics, but also showing involvement with extra curricular activities.

Love your videos but I regret doing accounting and I highly recommend international students in Australia not to do accounting. Almost no one will hire you. I'm in my final year, HD average and I'm not even able to secure an internship even though I'm ready to work for free. The biggest regret of my life is ACCOUNTING degree in Australia :(

Great video I have been off work due to medical, returning to school and workforce after first of the year. I have undergrad degree in Business Administration. I am taking a refresher courses on excel. I am interested in accounting and analytics. Should I pursue masters degree in Strategic Leadership Business Analytics or Masters in Accounting-which includes Accounting Analytics courses in masters program? I thought possibly Human Resources with Business Analytics certification. Thank you for any advice.

I have an English degree from Spelman College and wanting to definitely get into something more analytical...I am utilizing LinkedIn Learning until I can start pursuing community college certificates in the US for accounting and take the CPA exams. My question I have for you is: if I do not have any experience in accounting, can gaining LinkedIn Learning certificates in Excel and Accounting help me in land an entry level role in the accounting field, and will learning data analytics help bolster my resume? Hi Jamy - welcome and a great question. Figures from the US recently stated firms were hiring 30% less than per-COVID - the job market is really competitive right now! However, if you’re new to the field - a great idea is to try and do Community College courses in Accounting and Data Analytics - with the potential to transfer to a 4 year college afterwards. You might be lucky to get an entry level job with a community college courses - but I don’t think with just the LinkedIn Learning courses in the current environment.
@@amandalovestoaudit Thank you for your response! That community college idea is cost effective and doable! :) I'm glad I reached out to you instead of just going forward not knowing the market. I do feel that it is very competitive anywhere right now, and to break into a new career field without any prior experience is an uphill battle with Donkey Kong being COVID at the top of that hill! I thought about starting a Master's program for non-accounting majors this year, but as good as that sounds, I'm cautious about it because of the loans I'd have to take out, especially since I haven't gotten into any accounting classes before. But I am hopeful that I'm moving in the right direction. I also sincerely appreciate you for your advice. It gives me greater perspective on my next steps for a potential career and educational pivot. One step at a time... :)

Taking a huge college loan right now is a big risk - I'd think about waiting until after November as well - depending on who wins the US election could very well impact loans and funding for university/college degrees.

Hi Abdul - it depends on what you are interested in - if it is IT, then the CIS is a good path. If you’re wanting to go into the business side - then a program that supports your interests is the way to go.
I can’t tell you what your career goals are - and don’t pick a degree based on what jobs other people say are popular - you’ve got to be interested in it!

Hi AL - I guess it depends on where you want your career to go - even in the area of finance where analyzing large data sets for patterns on which trading strategies can be built is a form of data analytics.

I've seen a lot of accountants develop skills in Design Thinking and User Experience (UX) recently and move more into consulting roles. It is a great idea for a video :)

It would, was looking through your content beyond audit where u interviewed a lady in Marketing and It she was inspiring in that I'd not have thought an accountant would go for it, so yes would be great to have more of those together with the auditing content where time permits of course.
The key is finding something that interests you - studying something just because their are jobs is less than optimal (but something we have to consider - you might love carving statues but there aren’t many jobs in that!)

The best course is going to be the one that helps your career aspirations. It can be very country specific too - so perhaps speak with the accounting professional body in your country.

Hi Sumeet - absolutely! We’ve always used basic data analytics like Ratio Analysis in helping us identify risks - but we could certainly do more.
In response to risks - this might mean that DA allows us to test an entire population easily to identify misstatements, or search the population for exceptions more easily - then we can manually investigate.

It depends on what country you are in. In Australia - one of the best courses is the Master of Data Science and Innovation at UTS.

Most firms will not have any expectations that you have experience in a specific software package besides Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel etc. If you graduate from a Data Analytics program - then they would expect something like PowerBI, Tableau, knowing how to code Python,

Actually the programming part I've learnt myself and accounting/auditing/taxation was what I cleared the exam provided by institute of chartered accountants.
Right now due to covid pandemic the articleship opportunities have reduced but I was looking for something wherein I can apply my my data analytics skills in my domain
It is tough to get a job anywhere right now 😢. The advice I have for everyone is persistence - keep improving, learning, growing your network and applying for jobs

Hi Vivek - congratulations on passing your exams! Most analytics courses don’t require programming knowledge as a pre-requisite. If you’re going into Data Science as opposed to Data Analytics - then yes - programming is essential ☺️

Love your videos but I regret doing accounting and I highly recommend international students in Australia not to do accounting. Almost no one will hire you. I'm in my final year, HD average and I'm not even able to secure an internship even though I'm ready to work for free. The biggest regret of my life is ACCOUNTING degree in Australia :(
