I Tried To Live With a 10 Year Old Phone. Here's What Happened.

- I spent 24 hours trying to live with a phone launched in 2013. How hard can it be? That's what I intend to find out in my day-long experience of using the coveted Google Nexus 5 in 2024!
Just a 24hr challenge? You barely get used to the phone. Make it 5-10 days.
Try also to put custom roms that are more recent, with newer software etc.
While I do agree, this would massively increase the scope of the video.
Would've been cool to at least have some idea of how the phone would work with custom roms, but it's mostly a video for fun so eh :)
I don't think this is how you should do it. This phone might be bricked by its software but it still has a pretty capable hardware. Just flash a newer version of Android on it, Lineage OS something, maybe android 12 or newer, and then we're talking.
corrent
I say no, just because people who are wanting to see this are normally gonna wanna compare the current firmware to the current state of android
Yeah this video should really have been titled "I tried running an android 6 phone with no third party apps" instead of someone really trying to make the most of hardware. They could have gotten a lot more done with third party apps too, newpipe would have worked if CZcams didn't for example.
Google killed it with software "update" and with "upgrade" from 4 to 6th Android and then stopped at all, leaving this beautiful phone unusable. Not In My Watch! I am still using it, as you said, flashing it with open-source Android images and it is speedy, smoothy and pretty and usable as the day one! Just like Linus Torvalds said, now I'm sayin it here - F U Google
nope, I have a nexus 5 I bought for 20usd for texting, it was very laggy on android 12 even on android 9-11 I just kept it on 4.4 and its verh snappy on it
Old phone challenge. This needs to be made a yearly thing for a while month. Some Gadget Guy [Juan Bagnel] & his community did it a few years ago. We should pick an old phone and go with it. It's fun and a bit of a detox from all of the non stop addiction ment people have.
blood is basing his entire opinion on how chrome runs
Could have used a custom rom... Weird how it wasn't updated when you got it. I loved my Nexus 5! $350cdn for a flagship phone?
C'mon!
In terms of design, Nexus 5 was peak Google design for me. Next to the Pixel 2 and 6.
You really didn't give that phone any chance, very unfair.
The latest version of firefox works all the way down to android 5, and even if you didn't wanted to use it for some reason you could have installed the apk for the last version of chrome that supported android 6 (version 106 from 2022) which is still out of date but way less out of date than the ancient chrome that ships with the system image. You could also just installed android system webview's apk that last supported android 6 toı improve apps that need it.
That phone is more usable than you allowed it be, even without using custom roms.
I was using a note 4 last year, switching between stock 6, custom rom 6 and an unofficial android 11 lineage build, it was usable.
He didn't even login to the Play Store so this video was already an epic fail
I'm still using a Note 4 on Lollipop. Still pretty much usable
nexus 5 is just such a beautiful phone, imagine it's design but with a modern hardware, especially screen dimensions
yeah I love its design too
It's so good other than its abysmal battery life.
If it had near 0 bezels like today's phones, the screen size would be 5.5in.
Its weight 130g and form factor are so handy and comfortable.
Also did you say that after having to manually install the update and the convoluted process with it , then in the next breath say that flashing lineage OS is out of the question for most
Yes, most people don't have the expertise required to flash a custom rom like lineage OS. Ryan-Thomas however, being an android enthusiast, was able to flash the latest official update for this phone to make it a better real-world test.
wrong way to do a challenge like this, why didn't you flash lineage on it? you'd have a much better experience.
I remember having a Sony Xperia in 2013, it already had 4k recording and beast of a phone. I look back at it and think that not much has changed... i only use my phone for emails and CZcams though 😂
One thing I missed was how light smart phones use to be but I remember that sometimes it felt like my phone wasn't in my pocket because it was so light
I'm still using an old phone too, "Oneplus 5, 7- year phone".
phone manufacturers should bring the curvy design of google nexus 5 back. all phones of 2024 are rectangular with curved corners. google nexus 5 had gentle curves on top & bottom. how different did you find it compared to today's standard rectangular phones with curved corners?
Hi, one suggestion for you for another vid, the iconic Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (circa 2014)...mine is still rocking. Thank you for your very original vids 🙏
This was the first phone I ever bought with the money I made at my first job, it was amazing back then, God I loved it, I miss those days 😢
Most Android emulators are build on Android 6.0 and it works just fine. Did you update system web view? Except for Amazon, I don't remember any app not working in 6.
Reminds me of the good old days when Ryan was reviewing budget devices on YT as "Failtech" (I think)
jokes on you, im dailying a 9 year old phone(iPhone 6s) for the past 8 years
I have a couple of my old phones around and tried using them to just run specific apps like a music streamer and discord, and they really had a hard time. Now my Samsung s8 is still going strong and I don't see it being slow for quite some time. It is of an era where cpu's didn't really need to be faster for normal every day stuff.. even today.
This is awesome. I had a red one of these and it was my first time having a phone with android that ran smoothly, still miss it. The screen felt huge at the time compared to an iPhone
Honestly, I think the best phones of today will be _fine_ in a decade.
I used to use Apple everything, and my iPad Mini 2 was more or less fine last year when I finally decided to get rid of it - fine, but not good. Decade old model by that point, and I'd had it for around 7 years.
The Z Fold 6 I have now? As a fold I'm certain its inner display isn't going to hold up for 10 years, but that aside, I bet I could do everything on it in 2034 that I do on it today.
I would love to see a part 2 with a custom ROM, adressing each error and problem you had on Stock ROM. That could showcase how Custom ROMs keep phones alive for SO LONG!
Great content, keep it up
Even without a custom rom, Firefox works on Android 5+. Why would you stick to a terrible old browser?
There are open source front ends for CZcams that will be vastly better than the app or browser for older phones.
There will be slightly older versions of keyboard apps with the keyboard swiping feature.
If you were going to use this phone as is, you would at least get these things fixed at least not just accept them.
Actually did this with my LG Stylo 4 a few months ago. Yeah, it's still a somewhat newer phone but compared to an S24+ it was something. I actually found the experience very fun and missed the notification LED on it.
Man Nexus 5 is so close to my heart. Loved that little guy.
Nexus 5 was the first phone that actually showed what computational photography could achieve. It had a ton of quirks but I remember it fondly. I took it to CES 2014 and took nightmode HDR+ pictures that were SOOOO much advanced for the time. The amount of detail and the way it made the light appear when there was none. Amazing.
So why didn't you install Firefox at least, the play store says the current version is 5.0+
What a sad review. firstly should've tried some period correct offline apps. It looks so clean and nice still, and like everyone mentioned an up to date rom would make it function like new. And what exactly was the point of this video if you weren't excited for it. The cameras were decent and the rolling shutter in video was awful but would have loved some samples. It is quite a half assed attempt at what could have been a great review I am sorry to say. Despite what the software support feels like, nothing has really changed that much since the Nexus 5, and it was the phone of choice to showcase new apps for 5+ years.
I loved my Nexus 5 back in the day. Had the "panda" version as well
PLEASE do a video where you test a 10 year old phone (like this nexus, oneplus one, galaxy s5 etc) and put the latest version of android it supports using a custom rom, that would only be fair to these developer friendly phones. I used a oneplus one in 2019 on android 10 it was surprisingly fast, as smooth as my poco f1 at the time.
24hrs… wow, what a sacrifice!
It's so cool to see this type of video in 2024!
I am coincidentally daily driving an HTC One M8 atm as a 10 year anniversary challenge lol.
it's been a week and it's really painful and inconvenient sometimes, but I guess the nostalgia offsets and it really makes me appreciate the "golden era" of the smartphone scene more.
You gotta throw lineage on here and slim everything down to watch it shine.
Oh hey, I had this phone. How the hell has it been 10 years already.
I'm still using my LG V30 with Android 9 to this day!
And it still works good for me
This is the fastest phone I remember using .. I used to tinker loads with it and some builds were so fast I don't feel any other phone these days feel so fast I don't know why :)
😂 I wonder if 7 years updates is even necessary
@@AppleReviews hardware
My Nexus 5 started to implode last time I tried to use it. Still, absolutely my fave Android phone to date
Didn't expect to hear HLTV in this video 😂
Wow, interesting enough, I still use my Galaxy Note 4. This released back in fall of 2014. It works great as a dash camera/video camera. Surprisingly, the photos are still descent in good lighting. But it's mostly my alarm. I don't do anything else, but since I have multiple batteries, I'm really surprised it hasn't died! Haha
Great video man.
What carrier do you use? I tried a couple note 4's that I got from eBay and they all had the bad EEMC which just bootloops it or shuts off super early. I tried AT&t, sprint, and Verizon models and even with new batteries they all had the EEMC error. Even with reflowing the chip I couldn't get them to work consistently. Maybe this just affected the Snapdragon models
@alexwelch7198 is my old Verizon phone. I don't use it in service anymore. Is just on airplane mode or on wifi.
For ten days? I use my 10 year old tablet and iphone every day. 💀
I have used my old Motorola android 10. Works pretty fine. 10 to 14 isn't w big jump
Nexus 5.....had great memories of mine until it got stuck in a boot loop and never worked again
I like this idea. 10 years ago I was in high school and couldn’t afford any of these phones. Now, I have adult money and all of these phones are dirt cheap. But I wouldn’t know how to flash any custom firmware and android phones. I used to jailbreak my iPhones back in the day but that’s a thing of the past. That’s as technical as I ever got. I might pick up a Google play edition of the galaxy S4 and HTCM7.
I loved my Nexus 6!!!
Loved my Nexus! It’s still in my drawer at work. I put a bunch of emulators on it. I should charge it up :)
did you even update the browser? my grandma still uses a redmi 3s with android 6 and chrome works just fine on modern websites although slow for her
Just for nostalgia's sake, I bought myself a Droid2 (first Android device I ever owned). At first, it was really fun having one again. But I quickly discovered that you can't go home again. Compared to the newer phones, it's just too small, lacking in functionality and of course can't use modern sites and apps. The memories will always be great, but I can only go forward.
5:22 hi alex.... why the thick face 😂
The title should be "I tried living with a 10 year old Chrome browser" .
It hasn't bootlooped, at least
My Nexus 4 died in 2019
I don't know about 10 years, but after recently upgrading from a Galaxy S10e I feel I could have used that phone for a couple more years (7 total) well if I'd got a new battery for it.
if Samsung hadn't got rid of the curved screen on the Ultra I'd still be using and enjoying my S10e.
I wish I still had my Sony Xperia Mini with its 2.55-inch screen, actually I'll try find one now
With custom rom and replaced batery this probably would be just doable , at least for me .
With no google crap in the background and no instagram or tiktok addiction you would be surprised how much a small battery can last, my s7 has 70% battery health and it lasts 3 days in standby with a sim card installed no plane mode or anything. Having a clean rom does wonders
@@joey_f4ke238 i have j5 2017 as backup phone , custom rom without google services and really usable .
Banking apps wouldn't work
@@JustAPersonCO they work fine on most custom roms if you don't have ROOT .
@@Pieteros21 Most banking apps work fine atleast here in South Asia even with root and fewmodules. But yes its a hassle.
Smh as I write this, this comment section is currently comprised of 4 bots
Still have my nexus 5. Rooted so I have custom patched OS and it still works on mint mobile. I love this phone.
Tried using a Blackberry Leap last week but I'll need to flash it to something like Linux, which is sad since I really like Blackberry OS 10. A tutorial will help immensively
Even Samsung with the Galaxy J7 (2015) have updated the certificates in order to make usable enough the firmware with Android 6.0.1 with TouchWiz.
He didn't even update Chrome so this video is an epic fail
I actually have J7(2017) and it’s usable, but unbearably slow, it’s my brother’s old phone. I did manage to clean it up and make it smooth, but it just can’t last, I hope to get a new phone. It runs android 8.1 but the ram rarely ever above 1 gb of memory, (usually 700-300 mb).
Google need to bring back Nexus series with the snapdragon chipset 🫡
Nexus 5 has such a small battery that it was not the best to begin with. I have a Oneplus One on custom rom Andriod 11, and it is fine for light task, CZcams, etc.
Only thing with older phones is the software because it's so outdated. Other than that, it's pretty good to have them. You should make more videos like this.
I have a bunch of older phones. I would not use any of them as my main, but my GS5 and my LG G6 are both "usable", as in, If I needed to use a communicator (phone, text, messenger) that also took pictures and did web searches, I would be fine using them in a pinch. Nothing older though.
That's why OnePlus One was the better deal than Nexus 5 or even Nexus 6 back then.
2:14 Latest CZcams app works in 6.0!
This video sense in also showing how this works with a custom os which is recent and supports apps and stuff
RAM bottlenecks, processor bottlenecks and how bad or good they are compared to the OEM OS is a big point for using an ancient phone.
I had the nexus 4 10 years ago with that mosaic glass back as people were going full plastic. It was gorgeous. I one day was at work and really bumped into a leg high sink...my phone shattered in my pocket via the camera and never recovered lol. That was so sad. Other than that it was a great phone and my first one back from a windows nokia phone i loved. They bother were great :D
I had this phone. It was a great one!
Well I'm using a vivo v7 plus, it is 7 yrs old running android 7 and it's still works.
You need to upgrade, that's too outdated bro. That's why I did i upgrade my galaxy note 9 this year and got a Z flip 6
Do a 10 year old android vs iPhone in 2024
It's still decent hardware, you should've gone with a custom rom! Please make a follow-up video
You should have used a 10 year old Samsung! With TouchWiz! 😂
you could flash custom rom with higher android version
Nexus phones were so good
im still using my galaxy note 4 as hotspot and navigation (google maps). even though the maps is laggy it still usable as long as it gets app updates i think i will continue using it.
I still own a galaxy s7, not as old but not too far, running android 10 under lineageOS and no google apps at all, does calls just fine and all apps work ok, also use newpipe to watch youtube.
Also have the first huawei p8 lite and with custom rom and pico gapps, that also is very much usable, no fancy shit like instagram filters and whatnot but all google stuff works, though i don't use it at all really because the s7 is so much better.
I do understand the idea of attempting to use the stock software but those who wouldn't consider a custom rom also wouldn't try to use an old phone and instead would just justify to buy a new one straight away, so maybe a revisit of this phone with an updated rom would be nice.
I'm in the USA and use Verizon. I don't even qualify for this challenge 😂. Even then, I've never even owned a computer, so flashing and all that still doesn't apply. Shocking to see how much different the rest of the world is. I assume it has to do with the lack of wealth and abundance of youth. When we were younger we did stuff like this. Now, we just buy the newest tech and toss it in the trash after 6 months and buy again!
The nexus 5 was an underpowered awful battery mess when I got it back in the day BRAND NEW . good luck to you
I need that HTC SIM remover tool omg
Wish I had the OnePlus 12 as my main but it's not supported on my carrier
1:33 Firefox works well in my Droid 6 Redmi Note 4.
I lived with phones that strugled to ru operating system for more than 5 years
You could have logged in to the Play Store and updated Chrome. Same with CZcams
using 2nd gen moto x 2014 it is workable for me but it doesn't support yt so i had to download newpipe
Irony is my First Android phone i bought was the MOTOX Pure Edition that was latest & greatest PURE Android, however the battery wouldn't hold a charge after 2 years of use, since have gone through 4 Samsung Galaxy phones before my current Google Pixel 6a purchased after your Review. Irony is that 2 weeks after buying it, Google introduced the Google Pixel 7 models. Seems Google is upgrading models every year & half, if not SHORTER 🤳🙄🤠
I miss the handfeel on my Nexus 5
I had a nexus 5x it got bricked i miss that thing (bootloop)
Unlock it and enjoy 🥤
Still use a Samsung 8.4‘‘ tablet from 2014, android 6. its ok, chrome, CZcams. Even nexus 6 works ok, CZcams, chrome. So don’t understand your drama.^^
I had the same minecraft set shown in this video
Nexus 5❤💪
You want a true challenge? Try to live a whole month with a Blackberry Passport trust me it's manageable!
Os ui still better than today android version
Men scroll men see men like ❤
I used to have that phone!
La Vie en Rose that is not by Armstrong... hmm...
Just root it and install some new custom roms
This is the kind of videos I wanna watch. Tired of review and re reviews and 6 month worth it videos and one year does it still work 🙃 nonsense
When I hear people badmouthing Moto phones because they don't get many updates I think, yeah, but I don't plan on keeping a phone for more than a few years anyways.
I prefer nexus 6P😊
anyone looking to buy SONY Z ULTRA ?
