A tune called "King Kong Goes to Tallahassee" by Bruce Cockburn. Recorded at the Lord Elgin hotel, Ottawa, ON. Guitar is a Martin 000-28H, Recorded through a Zoom H2 and filmed on a Canon Rebel T3i.
He probably has an elite guitar instructor at a very expensive school. Problem is that is you can tell he's playing from memory and not like edge of your ability soulful playing. It's cool though I mean, it's definitely precision guitar playing.
what I like about this recording is the atmosphere of intimacy and the concentration on Joshes face. Although not played perfectly thWellis is a very enjoyable, beautiful performance! Well done Josh!
cunard61 You may be right there, my friend. Robert Johnson couldn't have been the only one. Paganini, Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Slash, something tells me the Devil is VERY real.
The combination of music dept. at Butler and your hard work have really made you into a fantastic musician. This piece really shows the maturity you've developed. Wonderful son!
Ms Turner, You should be justly proud. I have been following Josh on CZcams for about a year and he never ceases to amaze me with his music abilities. Wishing he, you and the family the best.
When I saw the title of this song I got my guitar and wanted to see if I might play along. About 10 seconds into the video I put my guitar back into the case from which it came.
Get it back out man. Took me about 6 months of practising every day but I learned this piece. I can finally play this piece through, learned from this video and the original. A truly beautiful track is worth the work, good luck :)
no way sir! Get it back the F out. And play what you can. Josh is good, we cant all get there.. but I bet you can do something he can't... musicians never stop learning! At my jams with way better players, I always get asked 'hey what wast that? Thats pretty cool, I never did it that way."
exact the same thought and outcome for me! Had no business trying to play along to this well crafted performance. It went back onto the wall where it belonged.
What's astonishing is not just the technical perfection but the musical intelligence. In every sense, it is a performance of startling wonder. It leaves you dazed and dazzled.
I now at 76 years old have two awesome guitar faves, Martin Taylor and Josh Turner. Both very different souls but their music has that really pure acoustic finger style genius that is so very very rare. Josh your music is bringing so much pleasure to a grey world, be proud, and so many people are waiting for a purchasable download of your 60s cover versions. Smile, you are awesome! ❤
I was lucky enough to see Martin Taylor play a tiny room in Sheffield years ago, a true virtuoso. Josh's beautiful playing here is worthy of the comparison.
This guy plays like I wish I could, and I have been playin a long time!!! What talent, and his song choices across the board resonate with my inner open chord! Hats off to you, young man. Keep the flame of soulful acoustic artistry and meaningful lyrics alive for the next generation!
Not just a great performance, not just technically excellent, but probably most strikingly, this is truly original. Blues leans on the same licks rearranged differently. As much as I love the blues - all kinds of blues, this was different in a very important way: it was not predictable. It was fresh. Thank you for bringing something new to the blues.
While I agree with you about the excellent technique and great performance, I'm afraid I don't about the originality. Josh is covering a tune by the one and only Bruce Cockburn.
Wonderful ... it is not the player, not the guitar, not the fingers sliding across the instrument.... it is the soul he offers to share with those, that can pick it up. Brilliant .....
I don't know if this young man ever has time to read the comments, but i'm an old guy, and not a day goes by that I dont listen to everything I can that's posted on this channel. Such Talent. Thanks Josh et al.
Been three years since I made my first comment on this performance. It is still one of THE Best acoustic solo blues performances out there. You are truly a fine musician!
Holy shit! I just click on the video. I didn't read anything. I just started listening. You are thumping out that baseline with your thumb. I instantly thought, "That reminds me of Bruce Cockburn". Now, I listened to Bruce Cockburn albums way back in the seventies. I loved his songs like, "Deer Dancing Around a Broken Mirror" and "Moma Just Wants to Barrelhouse", etc. He was so fresh and brilliant back then. Different. So, I dropped my computer screen and read the title and author of the song you are covering. Well, you nailed it perfectly. I'm writing this four years after you posted this song. I'm so grateful for your skills, talent and the technology to preserve it.

I remember stumbling upon this video on late 2018, and here I am listening to Josh and Carson practically every single day since then. I've never been more thankful to the algorithm for introducing me to such blissful musicians.
Leah Turner - The love shown this young man in his formative years is so evident in his playing styles. Thank you, to your and your husband, for bringing this talent to life. And for providing him with the drive and desire to be the musician he has, and will, become. He is talented beyond belief. I think if he would've been introduced to Chet Atkins, he would've been immediately titled CGP ... Certified Guitar Player ... on the spot. He is awesome!

What is actually crazy about this is if you watch this young man enough, he continues to improve where there seems to be no room for improvement. Really enjoy the ones with Larkin's sweet voice accompanying.
Hey Josh, as much as I enjoy your ensemble numbers (they're fun), this is just breathtakingly amazing. A fair number of guitarists can play this song. I've not seen or heard anyone play it so effortlessly and with such feeling. What a wonderful thing it must be to be so talented at something you love.
I realize now why I like Josh so much. Bruce Cockburn is one of my all time favourite guitar players, and Josh is in the same league. Josh, please let us know when you’re back in Ottawa. I will not miss it, guaranteed!
