    This was arguably the most important role from Lynne’s career. She won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best New Coming Actress of 1973 for this film and The Amazing Mr Blunden.
    As of 2020, Lynne is the youngest actress to have played Catherine Howard and the only one to have played Howard from a sympathetic point of view.

      I'm amazed by people's praise of her casting and performance in this role. There is absolutely nothing in her portrayal that realistically could entice a man to risk execution when he could find a cute girl like her around any corner in Tudor England. Surely Catherine Howard had to be more compelling in her beauty and presence than this dime-a-dozen, foolish little girl.

  • @jmwilliamsart

    Anne of Cleves wasn’t actually that ugly, she was a little plain but still beautiful. The problem was that Anne didn’t understand the customs and ways of Henry’s court since she grew up being sheltered. When she mistakenly spurred Henry’s advances it bruised his ego.

  • @Originella
    @Originella Před 4 lety +22

    I personally think that they did a good job casting Charlotte Rampling and Lynne Frederick as Anne Boleyn and Kathryn Howard respectively, given that Anne and Kathryn were first cousins, with Anne's mother, Elizabeth, and Kathryn's father, Edmund, being siblings, and the two of them sharing an uncle in the Duke of Norfolk. Not only are they both very talented in their respective roles, but they also look similar, although we don't really know what Kathryn herself looked like, given the rumor that Henry destroyed most, if not all, of the original portraits of her, painted during her time as queen, after her arrest and subsequent execution. Then again, maybe I feel so passionately about this because I, too bear a striking resemblance to my cousins on my mother's side, haha.

    I agree with the Cavalier that this film is too short and the pace much too fast. Nevertheless it has many positive aspects. Including the following. Keith Michell was perfectly cast as Henry the 8th. Charlotte Rampling was brilliant as Anne Boleyn. The scene where Thomas Cromwell is arrested was chilling. Donald Pleasence captured the spirit of Cromwell like no other actor I know of. Incidentally his daughter Angela Pleasence played Catherine Howard in the 1970 TV series.

I also think that the One who they had play Buckingham in the "The Tudors" should have been Henry not that other actor who was way too skinny and SHORT for the role. I would have loved to have seen the movie, and would love to have it on my favorite movies list here on CZcams, but only been able to see bits and pieces of it. Woe is me! I think she has been a bit maligned by history sadly. Yes, she had people burned at the stake, but compared to her father in his later years, she was positively merciful! Even then, she seemed rather reluctant to have some people executed. Lady Jane Grey for example only really lost her head due to the Spanish demanding her death before sending over Philip to marry Mary, and Jane's father making the stupid decision to rebel against Mary after being pardoned.
      She certainly did make some bad decisions, for example allying with Spain (which ended up with England losing Calais to France, although to be fair Spain seemed like natural ally at the time) having a very large Privy Council and generally appointing people who were loyal rather than those who were good at their jobs (although there were a few in there to be fair) but a lot of the failures of her reign were mainly stuff that had been building up for a while (financial ruin, religious turmoil etc can all be traced back to her father) and Calais was going to fall sooner or later, not to mention its defence was a major burden on the crowns finances. She also wasn't helped by Parliament resisting her on quite a few bits, and the Pope of all people was not helping her due to her marriage to Phillip, so a lot of it was out of her hands.

    Can ANYONE explain to me what the whole debacle around Levitcus vs. Deuteronomy is? It seems to have been a huge debate about which verse took precedence over the other but to my reading they're not even talking about the same thing. Deuteronomy states very clearly that if a man's brother dies without issue it is his OBLIGATION to marry his brother's widow and have children with her. Its very cut and dry. The Leviticus verse that Henry got so hung up on says if a man take his brother's WIFE (not widow, indicating that in this scenario the brother is still living) then their union will be childless. To me its pretty clear that this is talking about ADULTERY with your brother's wife while he's alive. Why did the church run in circles around this for so long?
