    One of my favorite episodes. Didn’t watch last night to watch with my son today.
    He was so bent Picard beaming out in middle of combat. He got mad about Riker. “He better not die! Dad, does he die? Don’t bust my balls! He dies?!”
    “I wouldn’t lie about that.”
    He still thought I was. Again upset as he stopped breathing.
    We have a running joke about looking out the window at end of episodes as well. “He damn better get in that window to stare into space!”

    Love this closing dialogue between Picard and Riker to reflect on what happened in the episode and the lessons learned for them. I could see parallel b/w this episode and "The Inner Light." Here Picard picked and hold Dathon's knife to remember him and his sacrifice, just like he picked the Ressikan flute and started playing "The Inner Light" to reminisce about his past life in the Kataan homeworld.
    Two of the most memorable episodes of the entire Trek universe and I love how do they choose to close the episodes by having these dialogues.

      "Kiazi's Children, their faces wet", in my interpretation, is more like "Don't worry. It's nothing bad." (As in, the kids are crying about something falsely serious.) Dathan said the same thing, to Picard, when he was in pain from his injuries. The best interpretation I can make from that is "Don't worry yourself. I'm fine enough."

      The weight of being the top decision-maker is his 'work' so to speak. If anything fundamentally goes wrong, he's the guy in the frame. Anyway he does do work in the ordinary fashion too, in several episodes he's presented as being overworked and near exhaustion.

    • @cleekmaker00
      @cleekmaker00 Před 2 lety +1

      In Starfleet, as on naval vessels today, the 'work' is split into shifts, or 'Watches'.
      The -D's 24 hour 'day' was broken into three 8 hour periods; one on actual Duty station, one for leisure/other tasks (including sitting on the sofa reading ancient Greek), and one for sleep. Picard had the Day Watch (7:00am-3:00pm), Riker had the 'Dog' Watch (3:00pm-11:00pm), and Data had the Mid Watch (11:00pm-7:00am).

    • @user-do2ev2hr7h

      @@cleekmaker00 Correct. though some episodes "Data's Day" imply Picard may have stood no official watch, instead being "at large" with Riker being the official watch officer of the Day Watch.
      As with many aspects, Starfleet barrows from real world naval tradition but doesn't always adhere to that scrupulously.
