      There are two original japanese dubs. One dub is absolutely amazing and the other has no vibe at all.
      Maybe when rewatching you've been watching the wrong dub.
      No other dub is rly good.
      The german dub is just horrible and the english is boring.
      There is one 90 minute version, combining both episodes, together with the good japanese dub into one great movie.
      I love it. There is no Anime I've been rewatching more often in my life 😅

    I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that fake bullet thing was added to the dub, US Manga went kind of crazy with this film if I remember correctly and commissioned some additional footage, Releasing a special edition DVD with digitally altered scenes as well, Adding digital zooms and such to specific scenes, so I’m not sure if that’s present in the original, I could be wrong, but as far as I know that’s a dub side change

    • @HistoricNerd
      @HistoricNerd  Před 11 měsíci +5

      I think you're actually right about that. The English folks at Central park media apparently loved the movie. I'm. Pretty sure they paid for the majority of the death force sequel as well. So I wouldn't be shocked at all that the Directors cut was all over the places because of that.

    • @alexh2790
      @alexh2790 Před 11 dny

      You are correct, I loved this movie as a kid and rented the Director's cut several times. I finally found a VHS copy, but it was the original subtitled version, and in that one it just cuts bullet hole intact.
      Your interpretation of the scene is a lot more sensible than mine. I thought he was filling the hole back in with a piece of skin 😋.
      I will say that I prefer the director's cut simply because the music placement is way better. In the original, the dour credit theme plays during the final fight. That change was for the better.

    I've always liked the quirkiness of this anime. It's not one of my favorites, and I don't even know if I'd call it a _good_ anime... but I enjoy it. Definitely one of those titles that I chuckle at lovingly at the mention of its name.
    I always mentally put this one, Genocyber, and The Guyver all together. I think because I would see them in the Anime section at Blockbuster, and would always notice the "Adults Only" sticker, which only served piqued my in them as a young kid.

    Man 90s anime had to much charm in the design and art. I mean there are anime´s today that I enjoy but all of them are so clean and well computer drawn. Which is why I always will love 80/90s anime and some early 2000 anime´s becuse they are often hand drawn or such. I mean we got awesome anime`s like Slayers, Venus wars, Dominion tank police which is wicked awesome a police force with tanks. MD Geist is one awesome 80s anime that has more charm than most anime´s today.

    Reflecting on this anime it was indeed awkward but great. I could relate to Geist because he was made into a Super Soldier only to be used as a tool and looked on as a monster. If the Deathforce was unleashed it was due for humanity using him as a tool or weapon. He doesn't have friends, he makes alliances but it is nothing more than a truce until they become enemies to each other. Geist has Krauser to contend with. They are both MDS's but they are on different sides of the spectrum. Geist lives for battle and Krauser lives to be praised as a god. Geist has morals and Krauser pretends to have morality, Geist resists the sexual advances of Vaiya while Krauser gives into them. Geist is calm while Krauser is threatened by Geist. It is a tension of narcissism, caught in confusion of right and wrong.

    Both films are my go to for recommendations for so bad its good in anime. The plot twist at the end with Geist activating the Death Force made me burst out laughing. Love you giving attention to this wonderful piece of a bygone age. MD Geist is objectively not even close to the best anime made, but is one of my favorite just from it's entertainment value, for better or for worse.
    Though I heavily disagree with the sequel having better animation. Most of it was just still images that barely moved and was actually worse animated then the original which makes sense as it was low budget which is why they even needed funding from Overseas dubbing companies like Manga Corps. It did have great drawings and artstyle tho.
