Is it possible to love Dr. Jordan more? Straight out the gate he had stern look to his face, and that did not change. 10 minutes in and he’s dead serious. Every answer went straight to the root. He’s not wasting any more time.

The Doc sure is educating Piers! Doc Peterson is truly a one of a kind human. He's the type of genuinely good that we all falsely believe is mostly in everyone. How many people do you know who have a strict character of honesty. Hardly any. People lie to themselves, tell white lies with lots of excuses, tell bold face lies, ommission lies, twisted lies, all sorts of lying. Yet this one little thing, to strive for honesty at all times no matter the consequences, makes the Doc a uniquely wonderful person. I think the secret is to not be afraid to mess up, because once you do that you can fix all sorts of flaws. And I think thats what he has done. "Strive for honesty, or at least dont lie." I think thats his secret right there. We all want honesty from others, but how many of us give it in return. Or even to ourselves.

I don't think Trump is divisive. He just has an uncanny ability to shine a light on people's foibles and it gets their backs up. If one listens to a long form interview with Trump where the interviewer isn't trying to play gotcha with the questions he is really middle of the road. He truly loves the country and the American people.

    • @theomarcus
      @theomarcus Před 3 měsíci +1

It's not a question of where he loves the country or not. He is completely divisive. All one needs to do is look at the 150 years preceding 45 and compare to his term. The division is night and day obvious. One of the jobs of a president is to unite the population and that clearly did not happen. It's time to move on to better leadership.

Some pretty alarming things coming from his mouth. Sounds like he plans to be a mafia boss. ‘ The president would be immune from prosecution for ordering a murder while in office unless impeached and convicted in Congress first.’ Even if you were to say ‘ he wouldn’t actually DO that’, the fact that that is the type of trash on his mind, uttered in public is beneath the office. Way beneath. He plans to cancel the civil service and appoint people he can control. People supporting this imbecile are NOT paying attention, and will live to regret it. Careful what you wish for…

The camaras everywhere is aweful. People have to be able to mess up just a little. There has to be some leway. For example, a cop sees you run a red light when there's nobody around. He pulls you over and finds that you're rushing your child to the hospital. He lets you go with a half-serious warning, bidding you well. Now same scenario, but a camara catches you instead. An automated ticket goes out in the mail. Zero leway. Zero humanity for circumstances. Thats the automated tirany the Doc's talking about. It would be an aweful thing to lose the humanity of life.
Besides, AI is intelligence without emotion. You know what else that describes? Sociopaths. Do we really want a sociopath in charge of every detail of our life?

However HAPPY 2024 and on reflection 2023 could not have ended BETTER all things considered. My Dad would say 'that could happen in a film' when crazy stuff would happen in life.
And for my family and I best CHRISTMAS EVER...After seventeen years, my Dad and his wonderful longterm partner are back in Sotland and I'm more complete as a human being for it.
Truly grateful for my Dad and not shy to say I still need Ma Da even at fifty years young.

And we lost a chance to reach peace with russia (forgets about multiple failed tries there), but obv no solution for Israel Gaza war because there were so many tries (somehow russia wants peace, whilst Arab countries dont).

Jordan Peterson is a careful and deeply reflective person. However, he-along with many libertarians, centrists, and conservatives-often gets Hollywood wrong. I am let down by Peterson's knee-jerk and predictable critique of Hollywood. If anyone can suppress impulsive, childish hackery and admit actors are brilliant, thoughtful people, it's Peterson. It's not by mere accident that every conservative has and will continue to tear up during "Saving Private Ryan."
Peterson surely knows, certainly better than me, that the arts explore the human condition in all its multifaceted dimensions. Politics and the arts will always have overlapping points of contact. To ask or expect artists, often the most perceptive and sensitive among us-whether Picasso painting "Guernica" or Hollywood actors reflecting on current affairs-not to comment on politics is not only laughable but utterly ignorant of the modus operandi of the artistic endeavor. I hate to be so evaluative, but for Peterson to insinuate that artists undermine our culture by engaging with our time's most profound political questions is to be somewhat of a philistine.
Why it's an uncomfortable truth is beyond me. But it's time for many on the right to accept that Hollywood artists are among the most ingenious thinkers and writers the world has ever seen. It is not, naturally, true for everyone. But many people have a sneaking suspicion that conservatives have repressed high school insecurities from being exposed by the intelligent, articulate, authentic, original, independent art kids for being shallow douchebags who regurgitated sterile cliches. Granted, I too am biased and generalizing here. However, that doesn't mean it's not a sneaking suspicion.

@MikekGullion - brilliant comment. My q was on the responsibility of those with platforms to comment on life. Just because mostly it gets done badly, doesn't mean it has to be bad. Maybe that's because most art out there isn't particularly good. Most footballers aren't at Premier League standard and most poets write mediocre stuff, the majority of guitarists go in the amateur bracket-but that doesn't mean they shouldn't give it a go, and even awful artists sometimes have a moment that transcends that.

I like Jordan Peterson and always listen very carefully to what he has to say. However, I strongly disagree with him when it comes to Trump. He makes it sound as if Trump, who -according to Peterson- is a man who "has flaws like the rest of us", has been unfairly vilified and demonised by the "radical left" and this why he behaves the way he does. Trump has always thrived on divisiveness and contention; from day one of his political campaigns and his presidency, he has used abusive language and ad hominem attacks against his opponents. Twitter was his preferred political tool and he excelled at using it. Isn't it understandable that a lot of people would be put off by that? Including non-radical leftists, centrists or even many fellow Republicans? Also, I don't see January 6th as just a "flaw"; if a left-wing or Democratic president had tried to do something similar, I'm sure Peterson's verdict on that person would be very different.

I agree. I love JP when he sticks to his specialty of psychology and how to 'be' in the world but his politics is wayward and he has agendas that he pushes. I lost respect for his political opinions after his propaganda piece with Bibi Netanyahu. czcams.com/video/4OcaMRLTyGI/video.html He doesn't challenge Bibi on ANYTHING, JP just gives Bibi a platform to say whatever he wants and agreeing with everything his says. Quite sad such a good mind is underhandedly pushing political agendas.

Agreed. Time and again, in JP's interviews, he refuses to call out Trump and his shenanigans of divisiveness and attempts to paint him as a kind of martyr or victim. It makes me suspicious of JP's motives and intent on this topic; whereas, on other subjects I find great insight from him. It's blatant that 45 refuses to take responsibility for his actions and lies. Jordan, show you are a man of integrity (a virtue you hold high) and call out the Machiavellian tendencies of Americas previous president resolutely, directly, and firmly in the same way you do with the radical left. You can't have it both ways...

  • @tommarshall7247

Does a platform not come with responsibility- even a small platform? JP talks about each person influencing maybe 1000 people. If you have a larger audience, doesn't the responsibility grow? That is what many in the arts face. I don't ordinarily do political art, but I feel v strongly that to be silent about certain things is to let certain people down, and to be complicit. Or should it be more about a sense of calling? E.g. In my world, there are loud voices painting Hamas as arty human rights activists... Because of the absence of contrary voices, and because they are on my heart, I feel that I ought to say something for the hostages, survivors and victims. Hard to do that so people don't assume that you don't care about small kids trapped under rubble. 😢 I'm preparing to share work that will get me hate and lose me followers, but what's the point of doing anything, if you aren't prepared to pay the cost, and try to do something you feel is right?
I would love to ask JP or Piers their thoughts on that responsibility. Is it responsibility or just something we can do if we choose to? After all, JP is happy to wander outside his field. 🙂

Agree with argument re. Ukraine and the military industrial complex, but as for Israel, Jordans’ alliance with Benny Shapiro seems to cloud his judgement. Is it that difficult to just acknowledge that the policies of the occupying Israeli radical politics are the root cause for the perpetual violence. Using the ‘victimhood’ ‘successful minority argument doesn’t convince at all. And no it has nothing to do with hating Jewish people, it’s all about aggressive segregation politics from the part of successive Israeli governments. Sometimes it’s just a matter of looking at the objective facts and yes Palestinians are indeed victims of longstanding oppression. Oppression exists, not only as an abused woke theory to install tyranny.

Petersen talks with some scorn of politics.
I learnt the history of the nineteenth century for four years. Maybe the nuns felt that that century criticised the Church less than other bits of English history does. It taught me to have an enormouse admiration for polititians.
Robert Peel created the police force, soldiers used to police a manifestation had opened fire on a manifestation and killed citizens. He created the English police force, the Bobbies or peelers. A force withiut guns, unless they folowed a dangerous criminal, when some guns in a locked cupboard got handed out to the police.
He also reformed the punishments handed out to criminals, reducing them. It had been possible to hang a seven.year old for stealing a sheep!
They passed the factory act, reducing the hours, people worked for and making work safer. So, helped the poor. Ditto with controls in mines.
They introduced window tax as a way to tax the rich much more than the poor.
They introduced universal suffrage. Women though, only got the vote in the next century.
What saint, ever helped the poor as muchas these polititians did? .

Piers question about New Years Resolutions brought a wry smile to my face. It shows Piers skill and experience in journalism by asking a question designed to provide the interviewee with an opportunity to communicate to the broadcast audience his/hers central philosophy.
The honesty with which Dr Jordan Peterson answers the question about the difference between being a parent and grandparent is an indication of his sincere attitude towards reality.
The Woke political philosophy was inevitably destined for implosion. Jordan’s anger at witnessing the decline of great institutions (like MIT and Harvard) has its roots in a deep love for said institutions. It’s a natural human reaction to react with anger, if one witnesses a loved one consciously choose to walk down a doomed path.
Piers, I wouldn’t get too excited about this “worm that has turned” moment at the Golden Globes- because Hollywood is cognisant that there’s a US General Election around the corner. The people who run Hollywood know that super-saturating popular culture with politics (at a prescient time like this) will inevitably harm Hollywood’s greatest public-facing assets (i.e. their stars).

What are we to believe ... when psychologists don't agree with each other's type of counsel?
Example ... this is what the psychologist Jordan Peterson perceives is his version of truth. “Gender identity and gender expression are not valid ideas. They are not true. There is no evidence for it. I don’t know what the options are, if you don’t identify as a man or a woman. There is an idea that there’s a gender section. I think that is an ill-informed opinion. Gender identity and sexual orientation are the same thing. I don’t believe these people, these terms, stand for good things. I think these people use these terms as a pretense that they stand for good things; as a pretense for them to carry on their nefarious activities.”
In contrast … this is what the television star psychologist Phil McGraw perceives is his version of truth. … “Cleveland Clinic did a study on transgender brains, and when they did the study, they found that the brains of transgender people, their brain is actually more similar to the gender they identify with, than the gender they were assigned at birth. There is an actual brain difference. That is a neurological fact. There are fifty years of empirical evidence here. And there are distinct differences in the transgender brain versus the non-transgender brain.”
From the book … When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress … Author … Gabor Maté M.D. Studies in psychology-an art trying desperately to dress itself up in pure science-often find only what the particular researchers have the eyes to see.

Completely disagree on his assessment of the relative importance of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza for the security of western Europe. I support Israel in its war with Hamas, however, the reality is that it makes no difference to Europe if Israel exists or not. Ukraine is entirely different. Russia has a long history of expansionism, and the idea among Russians that they have a 'right' to own places like Belarus, Ukraine and Georgia runs deep, as does a belief that they have the right to control countries like Poland and Finland. Any settlement with Russia in the 90s. as suggested by Dr Peterson would have left millions of people either directly or indirectly ensnared in a Russian Empire. That would have created instability on our boarders. It could be argues that we have similar instability across the Muslim world to our south and into the middle east. The existence of Israel makes make little difference. Even if Israel did not exist, the corruption, authoritarianism, poverty, lack education and opportunity in the Islamic world would be much the same, and the expansionist, supremacist religion combined with the population explosion would still exist.
