  • 1. Using a harsh cleanser. Products like astringents and alcohol-infused cleansers can irritate the skin and actually cause more oil production which can result in acne. Instead, use a foaming gel cleanser that contains salicylic acid and make sure it is sulfate-free to avoid further irritation and dryness.
    2. Using a drying toner
Most oily skins need a toner to shrink the pores, remove remaining traces of makeup and keep the pores debris-free to minimize the risk of bumpy skin. However, harsh astringent-like toners can strip the skin dry making it easily irritated. It is best to use alcohol-free toners which balance the skin, as opposed to powerful astringents.
    3. Not using moisturizer. Hydrated skin is healthy skin.
Indeed, dehydrated skin can lead to issues like inflammation, a cause of premature skin aging, and even breakouts. When your skin becomes dry, your body responds by making more oil-and this extra oil can clog pores, leading to more pimples. Moisturizers become especially important if you use drying acne treatments such as retinoids like Retin-A, or the antibacterial agent benzoyl peroxide. Even if your skin normally pumps out too much oil, acne medications can quickly take your skin from shiny to uncomfortably dry, peeling, and flaking. Using a moisturizer daily is the best defense to help ease these side effects
    4. Excessive exfoliation.
Physical exfoliation, like using a scrub with microbeads or using a facial brush, can be very abrasive on the skin - and doing this more than once a week will make your skin irritated. Skip the scrubbing altogether and use a chemical exfoliant that has alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acid (BHAs) for a gentle and more effective result.
    5. Wearing makeup that clogs pores
Keeping your makeup light means more than just testing the texture. Check that your makeup products have “non-comedogenic” on the label, which is a dermatological term that ensures a product was created to not clog pores.
