Human minds are fascinating. We’re so adept at identifying faces and creatures and outlines and shapes that we really believe something is there, when it’s just our unconscious attempt at making sense of an image.
True. At one point it was... really really advantageous to identify the predator in the bushes. Nowadays it's ... less important to our survival, but still absolutely intriguing :D
This is why it bothers me SO much when someone says something like, “I know X is true! I seeeeen it!” Replace X with UFOs, ghosts, demons, bigfeet, mothmen, Walmarts with 3+ lanes open, McDonald’s with a working ice cream machine, etc.
I know right! I’m autistic so I see or more accurately process the world differently than others. For example as a kid and sometimes even now I’d stare at the ceiling texture and legitimately watch battlefields unfold in front of my eyes.
I loved your polar bear because I see faces in the clouds, in trees, on my lawn... everywhere... and it made me feel a little LESS mad to see that process in action, with you, Kim, and other people!
Lol, I'm glad I'm not just crazy. Sometimes I see things I can draw in literally anything, just give me a table/desk/carpet/floor with a model and I'll see something and feel like I should draw on it so I don't lose what I see later on.
watching your videos motivated me to pick up water color again, I'm mainly a digital artist, and I sometimes use alcohol markers. but because of you I wanted to try a less.. perfectionist medium? I just like how expressive and bold your art is, I know this isn't watercolor, but it inspired me because I'd previously seen muddy or muted watercolor which isn't personally my style, even tho it's nice too.
It motivated me to get back to my pixelart. Which is completely different - but on the other hand plays a lot with tricking the brain to imagine things that aren't there.
@@robertnett9793 that's really cool, I love pixel art too! mostly creating patterns in animal crossing but I'll also use traditional medium, like I'll make pixel art on graph paper lol
@@kai_fatallysapphic for me it's more of the means to an end - as I try programming a classic style rpg thingie for a while now, and wasn't really satisfied with the assets and tilesets out there. This ability that we have to identify familiar shapes with only a few lines is a powerful survival tool in our biological toolset. It is very useful for identifying stealthy predators, but if you learn to harness it you can apply it in other situations too. For example, geologists learn to pick out different rock formations, botanists can spot plants that don't belong in a field, hunters can spot deer hiding in a forest, and FPS gamers can pick out opponents from among a field of pixels. There are lots of examples like this, it's just something we do as a species and it's really cool
One of our greatest strengths as humans is pattern recognition, it’s how we can use complex forms of vocal communication. This means that as you see more pictures of let’s say a polar bear, your brain automatically assumes that something like the first drawing is the facial features of a polar bear and therefore fills in the rest for you.
I did quite a lot of drawing in my teens and twenties; one of my favorite methods was to stare at a blank page for a while until I saw a few lines of an enticing image, which I would attempt to capture. Usually the first few real marks would dominate the original vision.
it reminds me of those psychology ink blot tests. every individuals have their own interpretation of what picture theyre looking at. some may focus at the blot, but some also use the negative space too.
Fun fact: You know those illusions where 4 circles have a section missing so it looks like a square? in a study they found out cats prefer to lay on those, suggesting they can also perceive shapes in negative space.
I found the polar drawing hilarious, like a clever joke. My roommate and I laughed as well when we saw it. Like Ohhhh! I see the Polar bear. It was actually so simple I had to laugh at myself.
I don’t see the lines connecting the faces but I know that peoples brains work differently. I think it’s super cool that some people can make connections that I can’t see
I need to see that same polar bear but absurdly round. Like, really really round. Two balls of fur, a small one for the head and a giant one for the body.
Wow, we are on part three. The video you’re talking about was the first video of yours that I saw. I was intrigued so I went to your channel. Now I am subscribed.
I believe this is related to gestalt psychology where it suggests that our minds doesn't just concentrate on the small details. Instead, we have a tendency to think of objects as parts of larger system. In simple terms, our minds fill in the blanks on certain things, especially on things are are used to (geometry, faces, day to day objects, etc.)
In my last years of high school I did a piece that was basically the same thing, the eyes and nose of an animal on a white canvas. I think I captioned it something like "you can only see me when I open my eyes" and my teacher and classmates didn't believe me when I said that was the whole piece.
Pareidolia. I have it. When I was sick in bed as a child I would stare at the uneven plaster on the wall & "see" faces, animals, scenes, etc. I can do the same with doodles & random splotches of paint.
While I was out hunting, sitting in my blind, I watched the ceder trees right before twilight. I could see long bearded wizards in the trees. Every evening i came back waiting for the deer to come. At twilight those three trees sloweley became wizard heads.
I have schizophrenia, and when I draw I see the lines of what I "should" draw, and if I follow them an entire drawing will be produced. Not even half bad, just kinda abstract drawings where lines go to meet up in strange places. But say if I'm following them and goes to make a mouth, the teeth and gums and lips will in the right place to make anime type mouth, probably because I grew up drawing Dragon Ball Z. It's a very strange ability and I wonder if anyone else has the effect when drawing??
Its just human pattern recognition. Its how fear of the unknown works, for instance. If you dont know (lack of data/blank) your mind creates a 'boogeyman' of its own to fear ( creates its own data/fills in the blank ). From day one humans have learned to observe and recognize patterns in all their forms as a matter of survival. It manifests in different ways among different people. Edit for spelling
The brain does a similar thing with letters when reading. As long a word’s first and last letter is in the correct place it doesn’t matter if the rest is all jumbled it, your brain finds a way to read it

In music, we think of it as the silence between the notes.
Which is just as important as the notes themselves.
"Music is the silence between the notes"

I should clarify. I am also a musician, and I would assume everyone in this thread is saying they are as well. Been playing 20+ years.

Everyone's wrong because that's a harp seal.
I saw a polar bear because of the shape of the nose. But you may be right. Since it’s incomplete, we’re both somewhat right.
We draw imaginary lines all the time ,
for some they appear more like thoughts,
For others closer to vision.

Pareidolia is a wonderful and joyous gift from our brains.
That 2nd face shape, 2 word came to mind right away, as though that face SCREAMED it:
MOISTURIZE ME

Woah that is trippy. I watched you draw the polar bear. As soon as an outline was mentioned, i started seeing it, clearly too.

I don’t “see” the lines, I can make the lines in my mind’s eye. Imagination is a skill you can practice. It’s fun when the lines start moving.
Can you draw an Oroborus?
Amazingly our brains are able to create order from the random and chaotic !
