    Darrow's entire story ark of the 2nd book and especially the 4th and 5th books are about how Darrow's self perceived invincibility gets him into trouble and harms those around him. The major theme of Dark age is him finally coming to terms with how not addressing his weaknesses has cause unmeasurable harm.

    I loved this book and it was my first dip in this genre. Years later, I haven’t read much sci fi and haven’t been able to get much into it so I’m surprised at the fact that I enjoyed it in the first place, it’s very different than what I normally read. I might reread it again 😊

    i’m having one of those weird book moments with dark age where i absolutely think it’s my favorite in the series and will be a five star but it’s so miserable and depressing that i’ve been reading it for two weeks and i’m 500 pages in and don’t actively read a lot every day. it’s strange for a book to have such a strong emotional effect on me yet i think it’s amazing?? 🦊

    I am so delighted to hear that Light Bringer was a hit for you, because I knew you were kinda so so on Dark Age and that got me nervous haha. I am currently halfway through my first read of Dark Age (that was the only one I hadn't read before yet) and I am SO glad that I was warned about the different tone and project, because it allowed me to go in with the right expectations and now I am actually really appreciating it.
    Also, I agree that this is the perfect series to read together with people. I've been watching all the chats you did with Liene and Alex as I made my way through this binge reread and it has enhanced my enjoyment even more, so thanks for doing those 🤩
    Excellent video 🥰

      I had people encouraging me to finish it, by promising that the quality of the story and the characters would improve in the other books. After the 50% mark in Red Rising, I was pretty much casually listening to the rest of the book on audio. But by the end, I was intrigued and excited for Golden Son, which did end up being a much better reading experience. Red Rising itself feels very unique to the series, compared to the other books.@@PhilfromAustin

      @@PhilfromAustin Change the way Darrow sounds to you.
      People that disconnect with Darrow describe him as misogynistic, arrogant, and too capable.
      I had a similar experience and pretty much loved all the characters except Darrow.
      Then I went back for a refresh before Golden Son, I had a road oriented job. So I audiobook'd it.
      Darrow... kinda sounded like a coward with a death wish. And it really reframed the entire experience. He wasn't some Gary Stu anymore, he was a teenager who'd already experienced intense hardship, so he was better at coping with horror than the rest of them, which was his only real emotional advantage. Everything else was him pretending to know how things were going to go and resisting the urge to jump at every shadow, stressing about what he would do if he got caught or even just failed.

    I couldn’t get passed the first book. I liked the first half until they started the “school.” As soon as that happened, it’s like a different author took over and turned it into an immature YA novel. I couldn’t get through it and DNFed. I know everyone says the other books are better, but I was too devastated by the YA change to give it a shot.

    • @LiteratureScienceAlliance
      @LiteratureScienceAlliance  Před rokem +2

      I didn't personally think it read like YA (the YA I have read is more mature and better lol) It read like how people who think they are Gods would be in a war college where almost everything is allowed, lord of the flies on steroids and lots of bad humor used for coping. But you are not alone, so many people hate the school scenes. I just don't consider it "being" YA part of that. Especially since I have never read a YA that I would compare to those scenes.

    🦊 Finished my re-read of Dark Age today. I am shattered. Shattered! I remembered almost nothing of this book and now I know why. It was just too traumatic so I blocked it from my memory. Coping mechanism in action. (Is reader abuse legal?) This was a real struggle to read. It took me almost a month. Happy I have Light Bringer waiting in the wings. I am not someone who notices prose but Liene does think the writing improves with each book (although I guess I don't know her Light Bringer opinions yet) and she has a better eye for that. In terms of character work, world building and plot construction those all do improve.

      @@LiteratureScienceAlliance My issue was the completely random way the plot was paced! Especially once we got into the last 3rd and the battle royale, I didn't have ANY emotional connection to anything that was going on, to me it felt like we were just jumping from one moment to another with absolutely no break or bridging in between. It also didn't help that I was extremely annoyed with how overpowered the main character was 😂 I thought I was about to lose my mind when I read about how he literally got plastic surgery to become the most beautiful man ever lived and how he has somehow consumed all of the greatest works of literature, I was like man wtf is going on 🤣
      The way I've described RR to other people is that it feels like a mashup of Throne of Glass (for the op protagonist), daughter of the moon goddess (for the pacing, where we'd jump from one event to another) and nevernight (for general edginess)... And I didn't HATE any of those 3 books (well except ToG which I actively disliked, the other two I just thought were ok) but to me it felt like Red Rising took all of the worst qualities of those books and none of the redeeming factors
      But yeah those are my two main issues: I didn't like the pacing and I didn't like Darrow (or more specifically darrows, OP-ness) but if you tell me it improves I might give the rest of the series a shot 🤗
