  • The best Tom Cruise movies ranked (by Rotten Tomatoes) shows the timeline of highest grossing Tom Cruise movies as well as the best Tom Cruise movies of all time from the year 1981 to 2022. In this video, the list ranks the Tom Cruise movies by best in ratings as well as grossing using the comparison Bar Chart Race graph. It is a visual representation of data which highlights the best Tom Cruise movies over time. Note that the gross number represents the worldwide box-office gross in dollars and the list is not adjusted for inflation.
From his teen idol days in the early ’80s to his status as a marquee-lighting leading man today, Tom Cruise has consistently done it all for decades - he’s completed impossible missions, learned about Wapner time in Rain Man, driven the highway to the danger zone in Top Gun, and done wonders for Bob Seger’s royalty statements in Risky Business, to offer just a few examples. Mr. Cruise is one of the few honest-to-goodness film stars left in the Hollywood firmament, so whether you’re a hardcore fan or just interested in a refresher course on his filmography, we’re here to take a fond look back at a truly impressive career and rank all Tom Cruise movies.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom Cruise is an American actor and producer who made his film debut with a minor role in the 1981 romantic drama Endless Love. His breakthrough role was in the coming-of-age comedy Risky Business (1983), which garnered Cruise his first nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. In 1986, Cruise played a Naval Aviator in the Tony Scott-directed action drama #topgun (the highest-grossing film that year), and also appeared with Paul Newman in the Martin Scorsese-directed drama The Color of Money. Two years later, he starred with Dustin Hoffman in the Academy Award for Best Picture-winning drama Rain Man (1988), and also appeared in the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture-winning romantic drama Cocktail (1988). In doing so #tomcruise became the first and only person as of 2014 to star in a Best Picture Oscar winner and a Worst Picture Razzie winner in the same year. His next role was as anti-war activist Ron Kovic in the film adaptation of Kovic's memoir of the same name, Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Drama.
In 1992, he starred opposite Jack Nicholson in the legal drama A Few Good Men, an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name also written by Aaron Sorkin. Cruise next appeared in The Firm (1993), a film adaptation of the John Grisham legal thriller of the same name, and in the same year also made his directorial debut by directing an episode of the anthology television series Fallen Angels. Cruise starred as spy Ethan Hunt in the action film Mission: Impossible (1996), the first project of his production company Cruise/Wagner Productions, which he had co-founded with Paula Wagner in 1993. As of 2018, Cruise has appeared in five more films in the #missionimpossible franchise: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000), Mission: Impossible III (2006), Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011), Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015), and Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018).

Yeah, that last 200+ million will be a much slower climb, as most people that REALLY wanted to see it, already have, & Jurassic World/Lightyear will be the new box office films to dominate the coming weeks, but there's still a crap ton of buzz around this movie, I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 800 million by the end of June, so essentially surpassing Fallout in a month, while likely still having a decent number of screens still showing for another 2-3 weeks.

It is trully remarkable that Tom Cruise is biggest star for 4 decades still making amazing movies (although less dramas, more blockbusters recent years). I think Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio can compete with Tom Cruise is same star level category, but they are not guaranteed to make amazing movie (well maybe Leo is) AND big box office. With Tom Cruise you can be sure to see something spectacular with good acting and producers can be sure they will make money. Brad Pitt doesn't have this power nor strong franchise he is in, Leonardo is also in more serious films without any Franchise, only Depp has Pirates making big bucks, but he js not guaranteed to make absolutely amazing movie to watch. Dwayne Johnson is definitely good money maker, but again - no franchise, not guaranteed the movie will be great - he plays himself in all these action flicks (similar to Jason Statham).

I can respect all of these men for very different reasons. I think that over a career, Jackie Chan is the only one who can compete (and perhaps even exceed) TC on doing his own stunts. JC did more physical, TC more technical (not just learning to fly but becoming an expert helicopter pilot requires a mental and technical acumen that I think exceeds expert martial arts, like comparing a genius at sport vs a genius at surgery, both incredibly impressive but I am more impressed by the surgeon than the sports star, but I’m an amateur pilot and paramedic so a bit biased).
Stallone never gets his due in mass appeal but those who know realize his brilliance in creating all of his most iconic rolls, especially Rocky. The creativity and the longevity of his career is impressive.
Then there is Arnold… a foreign body builder who could barely speak English, becomes an actor and politician… there really is nothing more that can be said, it’s unbelievable. But right now, Tom is living in the spotlight truly like never before.
