I think the Enhanced Perks are what really make the Retrofit shine. Enhanced Target Lock deals higher damage and Enhanced FTTC gives you a tiny bit more leeway and allows you to miss an extra shot between headshots (although you still want to avoid doing that as much as possible). Last I heard, Enhanced Target Lock gives you about 2% better damage on the first stack and the final buff is changed from 40% to 45%. So not ony is the final buff value more, but you're getting extra damage earlier in the mag too. I imagine that helps out the DPS numbers a decent amount, since you're doing damage from the very start and it ramps up to a higher value.
@@shadowreaver752 merciless is awful for boss dps, aztecross literally set up some schizo ehroar levels of damage stacking needed to get the damge he did, having font of might active and killing an enemy and reload and having prefired to get ramped firerate is hella unrealistic on most encounters and most encounters don't let you be as close as templar.
13:40 Slight mistake here, Datto says that rockets 5-7 won't have chill clip because it works only in top half of magazine. However, 7 rockets are whole reserves, not magazine, and for rockets you always have a base mag of 1 (except GHorn and Truth but it doesn't matter here since they don't have chill clip), which means Chill Clip is always active regardless of which rocket you fire.
I was coming here to say the same thing. You’re still freezing every 2 rockets as opposed to 3 rockets before even starting to factor in Wolfpack rounds.
Like others have said, the enhanced perks actually make some degree of difference here, where as they usually don’t matter. Not only that, but being able to run witherhoard with with this thing not only adds the usual tick damage but also allows for more volatile explosions.
Witherhoard benefiting from Weaken Clear is what makes it even better, the damage ticking away is insane, I run the enhanced perks with Gyrfalcon's and it's stupidly strong
@@lostinlucidity In datto's test weakened clear wouldn't really change anything as both div and weakened clear are a 15% bump and the mod is going away soon. So it's a good future proof, granted it doesn't change adding witherhoard into the mix but not everyone has it and it's redundant for all the group in a dungeon / raid to use it as well. So just seeing the base performance with just div to simulate all the crits is enough for the video.
@@squadass99 I should have mentioned that I add Solo Operative into the build, I don't rely on Div at all into the mix when I run Retrofit. It's a different change of pace for dps meta and how I utilize the most out of Gyrfalcon's.
@@lostinlucidity Yeah and that mod isn't gonna be around next season as well. Those mods aren't gonna be great for a video that people will comeback to in a couple months once lightfall drops and after a round of buffs and nerfs.
another factor w/volatile that is subject to change is how hitting damage thresholds with stuff like witherhoard can bypass the cooldown on volatile, triggering it on literally every hit
I think that something nice about the Retrofit + Gyrfalcon combo is that you can marksman dodge to both reload and reproc volatile, meaning you could very quickly dish out 2 magazines if it’s a long enough damage phase
Slight correction, chill clip applies to magazine not reserves, all rockets will have chill clip, all 7 of them, or 8 with deeper reserves. Meaning rockets 5 to X will still do chill clip and not nothing as you stated. Having 8 rockets does potentially mean 4 shatters if every 2nd freezes.
@@urazz7739 There are also several builds he could run to massively improve DPS he neglected to use. Stasis hunter can rocket, melee, rocket, dodge, rocket, dodge, rocket, melee, rocket all without reloading. I imagine that would be a huge bump to burst damage, then you’d swap to a sniper or something.
@@squadass99 Doesn’t need to be 40 minutes long, just accurate. You could make an argument that anything is bad if you’re not using it properly. Gjallarhorn is bad if you shoot it at the floor instead of the boss. Retrofit is bad if you don’t run gyrfalcons. Bump can be bad if you don’t build into it. It’s all the same.
THANK YOU! People are going crazy over something I’m trying to get them to understand is purely visual. It’s not bad at all. But it’s not actually spamming damage like they think it is.
@@amitbikramsanyal4056 It causes the visual representation of a volatile proc (the purple ring) to decouple from the damage proc. It does not cause more damage procs. If volatile was proccing at the rate the ring was pulsing, the DPS would be a lot higher.
I know it gets complicated if you add DOT damage to the calculations but I believe Whitherhoard makes the Volatile explosions proc more often. Like A LOT MORE.
Hmmm. You might be onto something there. I tested this gun a lot and I've been convinced it is glitched, because it is not consistent whatsoever when I get the insane volatile proc. Have not payed any specific attention to whether or not witherhoard was on it or not though.
The volatile process faster the more dps the weapon (void) deals. Withord has no influence, but the total damage is enough to inesc the volatile explosion yes. For this reason, explosions are much more frequent when the target has a large debuff or the weapon has a large buff. Simple.
Yeah, because of more damage ticks, it ends up racking up to incredible damage if you even use something like Whitherhoard, OR for example Anarchy + Hollow Denial. Highly recommended for the sheer insanity of explosions ^^
Datto needs to revisit this for different testing. Enhanced target lock increases damage, tether gives more of a damage increase than divinity, debuffing with any void setup that let's you do so turns all shots into crits, so no. You don't "need" divinity. And let's not forget that current seasonals increase the damage further for all weapons if used. Honestly a lot of this seems a little flawed. I don't know if a bit of this was overlooked or if it was Datto not giving this the best setup possible. And can't even say it's copium when it's not even tested against other dps kings right now, like Merciless. Idk about this video, my man.
In future damage tests, could you consider keeping the previously calculated dps numbers on screen somewhere? With so many large and similar numbers it gets hard to track what the previous DPS numbers were when the current weapon’s results pop up on the screen. (But then, people might just scrub to the end without watching the vid.)
I think another point of interest with using Retrofit Escapade is that you regen your super energy at an incredible rate while doing damage. You can basically fill your super bar inside of a single damage phase.
@@SwoleakhulTheBlind A while back ago Bungie changed how super regen worked one of the the changes was you now gain super energy on damaging targets which I believe varies based on weapon archetype since is its based on damage faster rate of fire generate more compared to slower firing weapons but not as much problem is those faster rate of fire proc far more often add on volatile and you see can what happens another example is wishender being one of the highest super regen on hit/kill do to it hitting 3 times and dealing a lot of damage
You can tether golgy at the beginning of phase and easily tether him again halfway through. Also, if you have a good raid team, you can tether any boss and then have it back through a mechanics phase to just ad clear if you guys think you wont need it for second phase or have another void hunter. Also, in some cases you can have it back for ad clear/mechanics, then have it back again after the first few seconds of the 2nd dps phase. It's an underrated part of the build. I'd say the biggest drawback of the build is the range.
@@Glaedr11 why do you need a tether when you can tractor and then have the hunter on goldy with celestial doing damage? Tractor is better. Also you should not be 2 phasing any boss. All should be killed in one phase.
Everyone seems to leave out Grand Overture from these tests 😢 Load up 20x missiles during the build to damage phase, dump the 20 immediately and then build up another volley while damage phase is going on and then dump that before it ends. You get essentially free extra damage from add clear before and then doing damage during the phase. Its ease of use and ammo economy make it such a good option.
Datto, your delivery, cadence and just overall the way you talk is very fun and enjoyable. I find myself chuckling to things like "Ghirn is stupid and I hate damage calculations for it" probably more than I should.
The thing with Bump is that it’s supposed to used with a Ghorn since the Wolfpack rounds count as chill clip rockets, 1 Ghorn and 4-5 Bump is actually really good for dps phases where the boss is stationary
I have an Adept Hothead with Field Prep and Clown Cartridge which should be the perfect scenario for Ammo, Mag Size, and Reloading since Field Prep with one reserve mod gives you 9 rockets. The ideal scenario is to always shoot a rocket before you rally so you always have 2 rockets loaded. Field Prep I think is probably the best reload speed perk on Rockets since the requirement to activate the perk isn't too demanding and it's a really fast reload without needing a kill. A crafted Bump in the Night can also get Enhanced Field Prep alongside Chill Clip which actually does add an extra rocket to your already increased reserves, bringing it up to 10 with a rocket reserve mod.
Chill Clip applies to ALL of the rockets for Bump. It cares about the mag, and always rounds up. Rocket launchers have a magazine of 1. You are counting the reserves, which do not affect chill Clip.
Note that this is a legendary Machine Gun so you can easily use an exotic special ammo weapon like Izanagi's Burden with it's super shot or Witherhoard for extra dps as well so this can help the boss dps numbers as well. Also, Titans can use Actium War Rig with Machine Guns and fire them for even longer. One thing to note, Datto didn't have someone with Ghorn in the group when doing tests on those legendary rocket launchers. That alone would bump up the damage numbers they could do by a pretty large margin I think. I can definitely see Volatile Rounds being nerfed to not be so effective but it'll still be worth getting/crafting this gun in my opinion as Bungie could still buff up other Heavy Weapons in the next expansion.
Witherhoard bumps up the volatile tick rate a lot, drastically bumping up damage, only 1 needs to be applied though, so if someone else uses lumina, entire fireteam gets a 35% damage buff, div gives a 15% debuff with guaranteed crits, it honestly feel like all 3 will make a lethal raid team combo One person will use div, won't be able to DPS with the rest The witherhoard just refreshes the volatile Proc spam, and lumina is the highest damage buff you can ask for and since void hunter fits best for this combo because gyrfalcon, you could have a 30% dead fall tether dumped on top.
Just the fact that we are talking about Retrofit being in the same dps league as the exotic heavy hitters says a lot. It shows that if you get the right perks on a gun it can become part of the meta. Now I just hope bungo doesn't look at it crashing encounters in the game as a means to nerf the gun into oblivion to where it has no use afterwards. Edit - you should try an Adept Hothead with Clown/Field Prep and a big ones spec. Best rocket in the game imo.
Tbh the outlier here isn't really the LMG, it's Gyrfalcon giving Volatile for 10s. Considering it's been reworked already I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bungie cuts that number. And a simple (?) fix would just be to add an ICD to Volatile explosions to stop the crashing and put a cap on the added damage there
@@Subsistence69 the hothead is almost exactly the same as the blowout (both perk pools, frame and dps the same, except blowout can't get adept mod) and I love that thing too
I hope Bungie compromises between game breaking and a great damage option by fixing the bug; lowering the internal cd of the Volatile effect from 1 second to to .25 or .3 seconds and buffing the damage volatile has on bosses alongside it. Keeping Volatile as a very powerful effect in this manner, without having all the nutso knockback and AI breaking issues. Do I expect Bungie to do this? Not in the slightest, but a man can dream.
Internal volatile CD Is not as much of an issue as when bosses literally get pushed to Narnia with this mg and volatile rounds. Tested my hunter build with witherhoard and retrofit on a public event boss sertivor on the EDZ yesterday. The thing literally got pushed so far (within a single mag) that I had to sparrow towards it to get in range of my mg. I also saw a video of Ghalran in duality being yeeted off the map with this combo. This is not okay lol. I hope they just fix their bosses. Not the DPS of this combo since I wouldn't say the damage is completely game breaking; it takes significant set up to reach its full damage potential.
"To summarise MrRokDC's findings..." OH MY GOD, I KNOW HIM! (I feel like Buddy in Elf right now because genuinely, he's a buddy of mine. So cool to see his hard work paying off!)
For Xenophage, pairing it with the Rain of Fire exotic on warlock has been my go to for the past couple of seasons. It completely negates the reload downside, while also being the fastest way to reload the gun.
The 2 major things you missed out on is the legendary heavies can be paired with witherhoard and/or izanagi, And more importantly, all your rockets need Wolfpack rounds, ESPECIALLY for chill clip, because the Wolfpack rounds are all applying and detonating chill clip
I was actually tinkering around with a voidwalker build last night, and I found that pairing Retrofit with void primary and Nezarec's Sin could provide excellent uptime on volatile rounds, in the right situations. Using the Echo of Instability fragment on voidwalker procs volatile rounds on grenade kills, for 10s like Gyrfalcon. Devour and Nezarec's recharge your grenade, so you can have another nade ready when volatile expires since Retrofit is dealing void damage that procs Abyssal Extractors. It doesn't guarantee 100% uptime, but I was able to at least get >70% uptime on average. Definitely not as effective in top-level content since it requires you to reliably kill adds with grenades, but it seemed to be working pretty well in Spire, VoG, and KF.
I really wish Retrofit was viable on more than just Hunters right now, since proccing Volatile is too inconsistent especially in higher difficulty content on Warlock and Titan. I'll probably still craft one just in case
There's also build potential for specific classes. Titans can totally overcome xenophages reload requirement with war rig. and warlocks can spam nades with witherhoard and starfire protocol, which can free up someone using div this season.
I don't think your Volatile Rounds test was accurate enough (I could definitely be wrong) but from what I've tested, the more damage your weapon is doing, the more VR will proc. In your testing, the only damage source you have is Divinity, a 15% debuff, if you were standing on a well you would've noticed more detonations, not to mention a few available choices you have for extra damage: a 15% extra from your tether, and since you're using a void subclass and Retrofit is a void weapon, elemental wells (not a reliable damage source against bosses, but doable) That's why you don't see many "Wavesplitter vs raid bosses!" videos, yes it shoots fast and it is a void weapon, but it doesn't cause too many detonations because it's not doing enough damage. Again, I could definitely be wrong so that everything I just said with a grain (or a bag) of salt.
@@TheSilvercue even without weakened clear its super strong. The witherhoard is more for constant damage to refresh your grenade so you can fire off bump without any manual reloads
ruinous effigy could also do this back when solar 3.0 was released. The debuff that ruinous's balls applied has some weird interaction with vol rounds and it basically procced every single damage tick. Me being the clueless person I am just thought it was some visual bug but I actually melted one of those nightmare containment abomination in a matter of seconds. I have a clip of me absolutely obliterating an abomination with it. It is extremely janky to reproduce and only works in little pulses now, guess something bungie did fixed it.
Literally any void trace rifle can still do this. U just need enough buffs and debuffs because of the lower damage per hit. But ever high RoF void weapon can basically do it.
I like this weapon with War Rig. Being able to get a steady 10% of the mag every 1.5 seconds is lovely. Although you do lose the ability to have a reliable source of generating volatile rounds.
I’ve only just realized that Datto color-codes the background of his thumbnails to the rarity of the weapon being talked about. I’ve been here for 5 years, how has it taken me this long
A note on the Chill Clip Bump as well, it reaches its full potential when paired with a Gjallarhorn, as each wolfpack round the Bump generates also triggers Chill Clip, leading to potentially multiple shatters with a single shot. The downside to this though is that you really just want one Chill Clip rocket per team, as the sheer number of freezes/shatters from the wolfpack rounds make the diminishing returns from multiple accelerate to such a degree that even a 2nd one is largely pointless. If you want to optimize DPS with rockets, the best combination is 1 Gjally + 1 Chill Clip Bump + remainder on other legendary rockets. Though, much like Retrofit reaches its full potential with Gyrfalcon Hunter, Bump in the Night (or Hothead with the right roll) reaches its full potential with Starfire Warlock. Pop a Well, lob a Witherhoard, then alternate between shooting rockets & throwing fusion grenades (theoretically possible with HoiL Titans or Ahamkara's Spine Hunters too, but you'd need to maximize your grenade cooldown buffs) to bypass reloads, throwing a second grenade as soon as you get it if Demo is on cooldown, leading to exceedingly high DPS for short-medium damage phases. And if sustained damage is more of a concern, one could theoretically run double special with Salvager's Salvo, to keep going once you run out of rockets, though that's obviously quite situational. In all honesty, rockets could easily be a competitive option if only they had more reserves, and they already are equal if not better than linears for shorter damage phases where the reserves aren't as much of an issue, provided you have the right roll and/or build to utilize them properly.
It's stupid good when the team optimizes for it. Several hunters rotating smoke invis for all the other hunters keeps volatile rounds 100% uptime. Starting off with a Witherhoard and Weaken Clear mod causes the MG to reload itself randomly on Witherhoard DOT damage ticks. With this method there are less reloads needed and therefore it increases the duration of 40% portion of the buff itself. This is how it gets completely nuts.
It’s nice to see someone with some common sense actually put one of these kind of DPS videos together for once this is the best one I’ve seen hands-down because It had a little thing called reality of what happens in real gameplay sit inside the video
Clan mate has Fourth Times/Target Lock on Retrofit. I did a Spire run with him with a third clan mate. They're on Silence and Squall, he's running Bubble, and I'm on Thunder Crash with Cuirass and Thunderlord. While I COULD have gotten a third thundercrash in during the first damage phase, I BARELY beat him with TC and TL in total damage. He was at 2.04 mil, and I was at 2.07. A large thing that you missed that greatly benefits this build is Wither Hoard with Weakened Clear. WH constantly procs Weakened to continually reload the Retrofit, while continuing to help refresh his volatile, and maintaining the Weakened debuff for the whole phase. Things completely freaking busted right now.
A couple things to note for Hothead having such low dps: 1. Vorpal is only a 10% buff on heavy weapons. 2. Adept Big ones spec is the exact same increase as boss spec/major spec, but it acts like you have both mods equipped at once. Hothead is (was because it’s gone now) able to roll with demo/explosive light or field prep/clown
You can run it with travelers chosen to refresh your dodge on demand. All classes can get 10 seconds of volatile rounds from a grenade kill. Armamentarium and HoIL titans, and Nothing Manacles warlocks work well when ads are around.
Been using the SAW and Shattered Cipher forever and miss my sunset Hammerhead. Hell, still use the SAW because it slaps and makes Warmind cells. They're just so versatile for mid content. Can't even begin to describe how cool it is to have a MG that can do some real boss DPS and finally take off the Linear or Explosive Light rocket launcher.
Would recommend for any Hunters out there to run Extended mag and Backup mag, by the time you’ve used all your bullets with 4ttc you’ll have your dodge back with 100 mob
I think some things were missed, like enhanced perks as ench, TL has faster rampup, font of might being ez to proc with reaping wellmaker and the ambush origin perk, This thing is perfect for solo void hunters, as you'll be able to run witherhoard or arblest, some void energy wep like Unforgiven (Demo + Repulsor Brace goes hard), you having some great damagr and adclear due volatilr and retrofit, and being able to proc a 25% damage buff by yourself due font of might and a 30% debuff with tether, this machine gun should not be ignoref
Witherhoard + volatile rounds + font of might + target lock is what makes this weapon shine. Really does something for the endorphins watching volatile rounds spam proc.
I would have liked to see Grand Overture tested. It's pretty easy to start a dps phase with 20x, fire you whole magazine, then empty the rockets again. It fits nicely into many dps windows doing that.
Awesome to see a video like this from you Datto, really enjoyed it and I hope you do more of these because I don't think anyone in the D2 community is as skilled as you are when it comes to explaining and getting a message, or findings across clearly
Hey @datto .. run this exact setup. But hit the boss with a weakened clear witherhoard shot. What is making the damage go nuts is the volatile rounds have a damage threshold before the explosion damage starts procking.. hitting the boss with a weakened clear witherhoard makes every bullet that's volatile explode immediately doing almost 1.5 mil damage with a div crit bubble.
A couple of other points. 1) it's legendary, craftable, and super accessible. 2) is versatile as both add-clear in a pinch, and boss-dps. It's a weapon type where I might say something like, "I'm not certain what's the absolute best for this specific activity, but this HMG setup is almost always a safe pick."
@@dannyboi9033 Respectfully, I disagree. I don't have Forbearance, and I don't intend to get it either. I do mostly solo content, so my kinetic and elemental weapons are usually for champs. Ergo, I love a heavy that can pull double-duty (Lament or the Saw). This HMG fits the bill nicely.

That’s my ethic at work too. It’s like “I’m not actually sure exactly about what I did so I hope it’s not wrong” and my boss doesn’t say ”Well FFS check your work and do it again if it’s wrong!” No no no no, he says “Yeah whatever I mean, it’s just your job. Don’t even stress. Just go chill”
I'm pretty curious how an ideal Retrofit roll would perform on an Actium War Rig Titan, like would having Extended Mag be enough in combination with 4th Times to keep firing sustained through a DPS phase, and how much better does that perform overall since you're not having Target Lock reset by having to stop to reload? (Assuming Extended is enough to keep it sustained with Actium and doesn't also need Backup Mag as well.) Especially wanna know because I'm assuming the Volatile Rounds interaction will be fixed by Lightfall at the latest, and I want a better idea of what its "true" performance might look like.
I love volatile rounds, so seeing them activate every half second like this makes me very happy. Hopefully they can find fixes to the game breaking without ruining VRs
The easiest loadout to max damage is 3x Font of Might, 1x Reaping Wellmaker and 1x Elemental Time Dilation. Use lumina as primary as it gives higher dmg boost than warlock well. Try to get 100 Mobility to reduce the dodge cooldown. The range on this machine gun is about 36-40 meters at 45 range stats before damage falloff. Use the marksman's dodge to avoid the long reload animation. The way to do this is, dodge about 15 seconds before damage phrase, ask the team to leave some enemies for you to make well. But don't pick them up, wait for the damage phrase to begin, then you dodge onto the well, and shoot one lumina round at the team, quickly switch to retrofit, and start shooting. 100 mobility shall give the dodge back at the same time as the mag is empty. Then you first switch to lumina to get the buff, then SWITCH BACK TO RETROFIT before dodge again, otherwise you will have to reload the gun manually. Repeat this until damage phrase is over. Good thing about using lumina is that while having the 35% dmg increase, you dont need to stand inside the well with the team. For bosses like Rhulk in VoD, you really need to space out from the boss to avoid those kicks. With the vanishing of the dodge, the boss usually only target the group in the well, not the hunter on the edge of the arena. If doing this right, you shall have around 3 mil damage on Rhulk in one damage phrase.
there are two incredibly big issues when it comes to the volatile portion of the machine gun that where missed 1. volatile is not effected by damage buffs, it counts as an ability no matter what cuases it meaning weapon perks, empowerments (raidant, high energy), amplifiers (font, solo artifact mod) and all other sources of damage increases apart from de-buffs and a couple exceptions cant effect it. basically a large portion of your dps with this machine gun (55% in dattos clip) can only be increased by up to 30% 2. volatile can only be applied up to 10x a second per target (at least at 60fps). which means not only is there essentially a cap to the dps of volatile but also when doing damage with another person using the same tech, either persons dps will drop tremendously (this is quite easy to see in dungeons. in another youtubers video on this, they managed to get 2.4 mil on the ogre boss in avarice while there friend who was using the exact same thing only got 1mil). as for why this is still destroying bosses in raids even with these detriments, well thats probably because your applying volatile to a single target 90x per second and the servers are absolutely shitting themself to the point where there insta killing bosses
for retrofit escapade u missed 2 things, 1 1. the damage goes even more crazy if there is a witherhoard ticking at the boss you will got more volatile procs similar to the clips u have seen everywhere 2. enhanced target lock will do more damage then non enhanced the increase isn't anything crazy its like 5% or so for the bump in the night again u missed 2 things, 1. people say 1 person uses it is because it goes crazy with a G-horn and every single small seeker rockets will have the chill clip effect, it works on some bosses and some others it doesn't I personally have seen it work on Warpriest and Rhulk. 2. in 13:40 u say chill clip doesn't freeze in the 5th to 7th rocket because its on the top half of the magazine even though u were referring to reserves not magazine, chill clip is based on current magazine not overall reserves so you will have chill clip in every single rocket regardless.
Love the damage test vids Datto but like others have pointed out here you’ve missed some not insignificant bits here. Witherhoard ticks, witherhoard volatile explosions, chill clip with wolfpack rounds, etc.
From my understanding, Volatile Rounds is supposed to have a short cooldown between procs, but very fast rate of fire weapons like Retrofit and Trace Rifles, break the cooldown somehow, applying Volatile much faster than intended.
Good damage test video, though I would've liked to see how the weapon compares to other legendary machine guns with target lock (Terminus Horizon and Avalanche are the only current ones I believe). It's cool to test it against exotic machine guns but I'd be very concerned if the exotic machine guns were doing worse overall damage than this weapon (I'll also add that you left out Grand Overture, which I've also heard a bit of commotion about around the community).
I know people keep using this with a Hunter, but I don't have Gyrfalcon yet. So I've been bootlegging it on my Titan and I'm still having a blast. Even doing the Heist playlist where I'm 5 light under, I have terrible luck with armor. I managed to get to 104 resilience, but my recovery is 14 at best. I've taken off champ mods, too. Proccing devour by dumping a bubble quickly if I have my super, tossing a vortex nade at RAF enemies to procc volatile, extending the length of both, and also using melee kills to start regen for myself and allies (in case Devour is down) while using the shield toss to get an overshield has been nice. I run RE with Extended Mag, and then the last barrel to get the most stability and handling I can, while running (iirc) the reload frame to speed that up when it does eventually happen... I also run Enhanced TL and FTTC, as well as Backup Mag for the mod. Mag size is 115 rounds on a belt. I also run it with Actium War Rig. It's a blast with Monochromatic Maestro, as well as Extreme Ordnance to deal with the annoying Choristers. And usually I don't have to stun Champs either. Toss your second vortex at their feet (regens faster with Devour), and Retro and the nade will melt barriers before they can start to put their bubble up. Unstops are still annoying, but definitely helps if the rest of the team either shoots or stuns them. I just got mine crafted a day or so ago and haven't done a playlist with Overloads. Also, almost always being Charged with Light is great for if/when the overshields break so it procs the Void mod for taking reduced damage by consuming all stacks. TL;DR: I'm basically an endless belt that hoses down most content so far even with how to proc Volatile Rounds on Titan, and by using the siphon mod for weapons matching your subclass and Monochromatic Maestro, I'm constantly churning out orbs to proc Devour with either Funnelweb or the Last Wish AR I just got. Usually in a Heist or Strike, I'm at a minimum of 24 orbs made and probably average around 27. So the build just helps out with boss burn, but also funnels into helping the team out a lot. Like a walking artillery support lol
hope it doesn't get nerfed, being worse than linears means it has a good chance of staying but linears are getting nerfed soon so i hope it flies under the radar
I've read chill clip rockets are actually better in numbers (3 or 4) and a gjallarhorn is required, because each individual Wolfpack round that the chill clip rockets produce also apply freeze and shatter, and supposedly bugs out the cool down.
One Chill Clip rocket user. One rocket with chill clip with Wolfpack is an immediate freeze. Any more chill clip rockets do don't anything, you'd be better off with a damage boosting perk.
Also, if you have multiple people running it it ramps up the volatile explosion damage since more people are applying it. It ends up doing more total damage than a bait and switch linear with font
So Target Lock is 25% overall mag damage. What about a fully crafted Commemoration DSC machine gun with Killing Tally x 3 (30%) pre active or firing line and 140 +rounds and reconstruction. Haven’t seen anyone test this yet… volatile seems to have a cool down so speed of rounds being fired shouldn’t limit its contribution to damage.
Not sure if this was factored in but enhanced target lock has better damage than base target lock

With ghorn u freeze on every shot also because wold packs get the chill clip buff
I was coming here to say the same thing. You’re still freezing every 2 rockets as opposed to 3 rockets before even starting to factor in Wolfpack rounds.
I’d appreciate if Datto would make a correction on this. You can see in his gameplay that chill clip is active on BitN even to the last rocket.
I’ve missed the damage test videos from ya, Datto. Nice to see them back!
Chill Clip rockets need to be paired with Wolfpack Rounds, so the tracking rounds can rapidly stack up the slow/freeze/shatter effect.
Came to say this. The damage boost heavies/specials get to frozen targets also factors in a lot in groups.
2 chill clip/ demo rockets on Starfire warlocks w one ghorn is insane damage
Would Cluster Rounds also work?

Like others have said, the enhanced perks actually make some degree of difference here, where as they usually don’t matter. Not only that, but being able to run witherhoard with with this thing not only adds the usual tick damage but also allows for more volatile explosions.
Lot of "mistakes" in this video
Was about to comment on this, thanks for pointing it out!
Also it'll freeze and shatter with every single rocket if you've got a Ghorn user
i thought bump in the night was so good because you pair it with Ghorn and every wolfpack round applies chill clip and freezes the boss
Yep, Datto would've done better in his testing if he had one person with Ghorn instead of 2 Divinities maintaining the bigger crit spot buff.
@@urazz7739 There are also several builds he could run to massively improve DPS he neglected to use. FYI volatile procs have a hidden cooldown, the pulsing purple rings are a visual glitch
THANK YOU! People are going crazy over something I’m trying to get them to understand is purely visual. It’s not bad at all. But it’s not actually spamming damage like they think it is.
Aye, there have been some other content creators proving this to be the case. It looks funny, though!
The internal cooldown breaks on very high rpm weapons, such as Retrofit.
There is proof of the internal cooldown timer breaking especially if you combine retrofit and witherhoard
@@Glaedr11 I remember seeing a video about whither making proc more. I can't remember who though.
@@jullypsy100 volatile explosions happen based on any damage source though. Wither adding a damage source = more explosions
What I love about retrofit is that it can do dps and be used as ad clear. While still doing really good on ammo conservation.
I think it’s worth noting that enhanced target lock does (I think) 10% more damage at max stacks than normal target lock.
*5% more . (Is 40% at max stack and goes upto 45% with enhanced)
Grand overture should be in the machine gun convo aswell, its a beast now

This is the perfect oppurtunity for Bungie to put in Super Good Advice as a 900RPM DPS machine gun.

Tell me how?
@@SwoleakhulTheBlind A while back ago Bungie changed how super regen worked one of the the changes was you now gain super energy on damaging targets which I believe varies based on weapon archetype since is its based on damage faster rate of fire generate more compared to slower firing weapons but not as much problem is those faster rate of fire proc far more often add on volatile and you see can what happens another example is wishender being one of the highest super regen on hit/kill do to it hitting 3 times and dealing a lot of damage
that shouldnt matter because if you arent 1 phasing the boss then the guns you are using suck AKA retrofit escapade and linears.
Everyone seems to leave out Grand Overture from these tests 😢
Load up 20x missiles during the build to damage phase, dump the 20 immediately and then build up another volley while damage phase is going on and then dump that before it ends.

The "repeating of course" reference was noticed and appreciated

Witherhoard bumps up the volatile tick rate a lot, drastically bumping up damage, only 1 needs to be applied though, so if someone else uses lumina, entire fireteam gets a 35% damage buff, div gives a 15% debuff with guaranteed crits, it honestly feel like all 3 will make a lethal raid team combo
One person will use div, won't be able to DPS with the rest
The witherhoard just refreshes the volatile Proc spam, and lumina is the highest damage buff you can ask for and since void hunter fits best for this combo because gyrfalcon, you could have a 30% dead fall tether dumped on top.
I have an adept clown cartridge demo hothead thats amazing for just rocket dumping with minimal reloads

Deathbringer will straight out bug the game is what I fear if this happened.

OH MY GOD, I KNOW HIM! (I feel like Buddy in Elf right now because genuinely, he's a buddy of mine. So cool to see his hard work paying off!)
I wanna test the new lmg on a titan with Actum War Rig with the volatile aspect
For Xenophage, pairing it with the Rain of Fire exotic on warlock has been my go to for the past couple of seasons. It completely negates the reload downside, while also being the fastest way to reload the gun.
The 2 major things you missed out on is the legendary heavies can be paired with witherhoard and/or izanagi,
And more importantly, all your rockets need Wolfpack rounds, ESPECIALLY for chill clip, because the Wolfpack rounds are all applying and detonating chill clip
Oh my goodness never thought I'd hear my name here, absolutely love your stuff datto thank you so much for the shoutout! ❤
In your testing, the only damage source you have is Divinity, a 15% debuff, if you were standing on a well you would've noticed more detonations, not to mention a few available choices you have for extra damage: a 15% extra from your tether, and since you're using a void subclass and Retrofit is a void weapon, elemental wells (not a reliable damage source against bosses, but doable)
That's why you don't see many "Wavesplitter vs raid bosses!" videos, yes it shoots fast and it is a void weapon, but it doesn't cause too many detonations because it's not doing enough damage.
Again, I could definitely be wrong so that everything I just said with a grain (or a bag) of salt.
Tether is 30%
@@Subsistence69 That's why I said an "extra" 15%, divinity is a must unless the target has a massive crit spot.

Hollow Denial can do this as well w 5x Swash and Witherhoard, or FoM and debuff
Literally any void trace rifle can still do this. U just need enough buffs and debuffs because of the lower damage per hit. But ever high RoF void weapon can basically do it.
I like this weapon with War Rig. Being able to get a steady 10% of the mag every 1.5 seconds is lovely. Although you do lose the ability to have a reliable source of generating volatile rounds.

How in all of his testing did he not realize how chill clip works
if you stack it even with the "Font of Might" buff (especially when tripple stacked), it beats out everything and it's not even close!
It’s nice to see someone with some common sense actually put one of these kind of DPS videos together for once this is the best one I’ve seen hands-down because It had a little thing called reality of what happens in real gameplay sit inside the video
well it's good that it isn't the best damage ever otherwise bungie would nerf it
Clan mate has Fourth Times/Target Lock on Retrofit.

What about Grand Overture? It's a machine gun and from what I've seen has some of the highest dps in the game.

Another thing to point out is that Retro is legendary (as are the RLs and cata) which allows you to free up your exotic for other things.
(Assuming Extended is enough to keep it sustained with Actium and doesn't also need Backup Mag as well.)
Especially wanna know because I'm assuming the Volatile Rounds interaction will be fixed by Lightfall at the latest, and I want a better idea of what its "true" performance might look like.
I love volatile rounds, so seeing them activate every half second like this makes me very happy. Hopefully they can find fixes to the game breaking without ruining VRs
Retrofit isn't as good as other options without volatile, but gahdamn is it more fun
Glad I can finally craft Retrofit. This would be a good weapon for Nightstalker Hunters.
This was the datto that I remember. Well done sir.
there are two incredibly big issues when it comes to the volatile portion of the machine gun that where missed
1. volatile is not effected by damage buffs, it counts as an ability no matter what cuases it meaning weapon perks, empowerments (raidant, high energy), amplifiers (font, solo artifact mod) and all other sources of damage increases apart from de-buffs and a couple exceptions cant effect it. basically a large portion of your dps with this machine gun (55% in dattos clip) can only be increased by up to 30%
2. volatile can only be applied up to 10x a second per target (at least at 60fps). which means not only is there essentially a cap to the dps of volatile but also when doing damage with another person using the same tech, either persons dps will drop tremendously (this is quite easy to see in dungeons. in another youtubers video on this, they managed to get 2.4 mil on the ogre boss in avarice while there friend who was using the exact same thing only got 1mil). as for why this is still destroying bosses in raids even with these detriments, well thats probably because your applying volatile to a single target 90x per second and the servers are absolutely shitting themself to the point where there insta killing bosses
for retrofit escapade u missed 2 things, 1
1. the damage goes even more crazy if there is a witherhoard ticking at the boss you will got more volatile procs similar to the clips u have seen everywhere
2. enhanced target lock will do more damage then non enhanced the increase isn't anything crazy its like 5% or so
for the bump in the night again u missed 2 things,
1. people say 1 person uses it is because it goes crazy with a G-horn and every single small seeker rockets will have the chill clip effect, it works on some bosses and some others it doesn't I personally have seen it work on Warpriest and Rhulk.
2. in 13:40 u say chill clip doesn't freeze in the 5th to 7th rocket because its on the top half of the magazine even though u were referring to reserves not magazine, chill clip is based on current magazine not overall reserves so you will have chill clip in every single rocket regardless.
Love the damage test vids Datto but like others have pointed out here you’ve missed some not insignificant bits here. Witherhoard ticks, witherhoard volatile explosions, chill clip with wolfpack rounds, etc.
From my understanding, Volatile Rounds is supposed to have a short cooldown between procs, but very fast rate of fire weapons like Retrofit and Trace Rifles, break the cooldown somehow, applying Volatile much faster than intended.
enhanced field prep on Bump In The Night instead of demo for consistent reload speed and 2 additional rockets
“Repeating of course” nice reference
Good damage test video, though I would've liked to see how the weapon compares to other legendary machine guns with target lock (Terminus Horizon and Avalanche are the only current ones I believe). It's cool to test it against exotic machine guns but I'd be very concerned if the exotic machine guns were doing worse overall damage than this weapon (I'll also add that you left out Grand Overture, which I've also heard a bit of commotion about around the community).
Stuff like this is why I watch the CZcams content. I had no idea...
Like a walking artillery support lol
hope it doesn't get nerfed, being worse than linears means it has a good chance of staying but linears are getting nerfed soon so i hope it flies under the radar
linears are bad either way. They arent good damage.
@Butte Saggington yep saw the gmeiners test vid
Also, if you have multiple people running it it ramps up the volatile explosion damage since more people are applying it. It ends up doing more total damage than a bait and switch linear with font
Got any soruce for that? I heard It can compete with bait and switch without font but not with font. Then bait and switch edges it out.
Target Lock is basically what High Impact Reserves wishes it could be
So Target Lock is 25% overall mag damage.
Bump in the night w/ chill clip is meant to be paired with gally because wolfpack rounds prok chill clip
