It's Viking Pagan Heathen Themed Melodic Blackened Death Rock Metal with Heavy Metal Thrash Speed Influences to be exact.
I wonder how much it differs from all the members helping to write the music opposed to one or two guys writing the music themselves. There's a lot of variables to consider.

The whole Viking Metal isn't meaning that Vikings play it, it means it's based around Vikings, much like Pirate Metal, the music and lyrics are tied around Vikings/Pirates. I wouldn't call Amon Amarth Viking Metal myself but yeah.

Hail viking metal! They sing of the gods, the stories told in saga's and edda's, and of the life a viking lived in combat, from trade, to toil, to death. You listen to them, you're listening to the stories of vikings. Besides, look at them. Looks like a viking. Drinks like a viking, growls like a viking, must be a viking. Whatever they claim to be, vitkar know best.
When you find out that their name comes from The Lord of the Rings, and you love them even more!
It's not Viking Metal ? It's Melodic Death Metal ?
Amon Amarth say themselves play melodeath but the genre viking metal is more about the lyrics than the music. There is no typical viking metal sound.
Viking Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal... How about AMON AMARTH METAL
Its Viking themed Melodic Death Metal.... Viking Metal is a sub-genre of Black Metal

Don't even worry about it. They're wasting their time when they could be enjoying the music. Usually if it goes on for a while, it's usually an idiot making an argument ie. "Amon Amarth is black metal". lol
