  • I need some advice from you well-traveled viewers out there. What do you know about hotshot work. Specifically, what do you know about the Dodge Cummins pickup truck?
    Thanks for your help, and thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already.

    Good Luck 👍🏼 I'd recommend getting a pre-pass for that hot shot truck. Them bears at the scale houses love those trucks.

      Good advice old buddy. Not worried. I got that covered. Will just tell them I know you. That’s a free pass nowadays. Name dropping a celebrity should work haha. Stay lucky pal.

    Cool looking truck! Looks like a sport or Longhorn package. I’m a big Cummins fan, so I’ll toss you a few things about them. I’ve probably owned a dozen of them!
    If you delete/tune on it, be sure the driver keeps an eye on things because you can melt the block on the thing quick! I stick a Mishimoto (or any quality aluminum) radiator in all of mine. I try not to get carried away on big pulls and keep my speed reasonable. Over-stressing any tuned motor is asking for a pile of trouble!
    The Aisin vs 68RFE transmission is a debate that Dodge Ram guys will go around & around on until they are blue in the face! The Aisin is built for real towing, so if you’re going to hotshot - it’s a good thing to have behind that 6.7! That 68RFE is still a bruiser of a transmission & can go for a very long time as well.
    The rear axle will be 3.53 or 3.73 or 4.10. I have a 3.53 in a 3500 and it’s great for running in the flats for a long way. But if I were doing mountains & a lot of really heavy hauling, I’d probably want the 4.10.
    Make sure it has a cabin air filter. If the condenser (or heater core) is clogged or starts leaking - the whole dash has to come out. Expensive! If it doesn’t, buy the kit, put it in & change those filters regularly.
    I’d get some helper bags for the back axle. And an auxiliary fuel tank for the back. Don’t plumb it into your tank - DOT doesn’t like that. It will need a little electric pump. The extra fuel capacity can help you get thru an area with high prices without having to fuel up until you get to a better area. You can really take advantage of fuel shopping with the extra capacity.
    I’m really excited for you! I don’t think you’ll lose much value if you get the miles up to 150k & decide to upgrade or that it’s not for you.
    Now trailer shopping! Diamond C is the Cadillac but the other brands are great too. Just look it over close & pick a brand that has the best support system in your view. I look forward to seeing you enjoy this new adventure. Best of luck, Amigo!

    Seen that on one of the satellite channels loads come up and people bid on them time runs out lowest bid wins good money to be made 👍 especially if you can get 2 or 3 drops on the trailer

      Thank you. Williston. Haha. Coldest place on earth. Haha. Kinda got it figured best as I can for now. Just need to take the leap. Always the hardest part. Made a ton of changes to the otr stuff we do. Was planning on doing hotshot a bit later but this truck popped up.

      I thought I replied to that message. It was a great coach to drive. Tons of power very steady on the road with that B12r chassis. I bought that and the diner coach at the same time from Westy. iPad exchanged the 2000 irizar and took them both. Happy days. Heading to the airport right now to fly home. Going to the road run at the weekend. Only until Tuesday.

    Hi Tommy you have had this on your mind for a while now and as you say if you try it and it doesn't work out then you'll move on to your next idea best too get it out your system mate,( nothing ventured nothing gained ) run the numbers by your son and act on his advice, Cummings is a good engine the rest of the pickup I haven't a clue, wishing you good luck what ever your decision, Best wishes to the misses love the look of the cafe and the hard work she has put into it. Thanks bill. The cafe does look good. The weather has not been as good as we hoped this summer. Have you been in lately. Thanks for your comments on the hot shot. I probably need to do it. Just not sure on the timing of it.

    Hello Mr. Tommy, you mentioned this idea a while ago. Should be able to research that year engine and trans for problems...they put it in all kinds of things, trucks, motor homes. Looks like a good truck, maybe an Ultra cab if you were gonna try and sleep in it, little more room. Price 🤷‍♂, I think Stellantis maybe nearing a fire sale. Maybe not for a specialty truck like that. Use to watch a guy Steady Trucker, he broke down that whole hot shot thing pretty good (revenue, finding loads, What it was like) he's outta TX so that might be more info. Just the reduced fuel and high dollar Maintenace makes it attractive. If you can assemble the partials you could kill it I think, but you've probably tried that with a flatbed?...that can be difficult to hit every time.

      @SCOTTISHTRUCKERTOMMY  Před 13 dny

      Thanks for your comment. Lots of good information. The mega carbs on a 1 ton with double wheels at the back are very hard to find it seems like. This one has been very hard to find also not sure whether to pull the trigger on it or not. I haven’t tried the partial thing on the flatbed. Sorry that’s not true. We did one two weeks ago and it worked out really well. The hot shot just seems a bit more maneuverable to get in and out of smaller places that might ship or receive Partials. Just find it a bit intriguing. I like the idea of doing it when I I’m about older. Seems like I have seen all of America but only where a truck can go. Might be fun to unhook and see some cities or national parks.

    Hey Tommy, Tow Piglet out of Texas has many contents you might want to check out. Not his new stuff but the old videos. He was very successful with non CDL hotshot until he run into issue.

    • @SCOTTISHTRUCKERTOMMY
      @SCOTTISHTRUCKERTOMMY  Před 13 dny

      There’s always an issue. Trucking is great for a while then there becomes an issue. I have seen some of the videos. Thanks for the suggestion. There is baby lion hotshot also. Been trying to find out as much as I can.

    The problem with hot shot is trucks get wore out quick! If you stay in a hotel it gets expensive if you stay in the truck it’s not very comfortable.

    • @SCOTTISHTRUCKERTOMMY
      @SCOTTISHTRUCKERTOMMY  Před 13 dny +1

      I can see that being an issue. Been told to keep them for 100,000 miles and buy them at 80,000. Still decent value in them at 180,000 miles. Was wondering if a guy could make a small bunk a hot short trailer, had a small flat platform on top of the gooseneck. Even behind the cab. I do kind of like the hotel stopovers. I guess you get what you pay for.
