Personally I find the internet absolutely exhausting to be part of nowadays. It's not that it "used to be better", more that I preferred when it was quieter, less commercialised. There's still brilliant content being created online, which should be celebrated, but man is it being covered under an ever-expanding blanket of soot.
I agree with toycat's video for the most part, but I still firmly believe it did truly used to be better and I'm seeing it with my own two eyes.
Exactly.
that. literally means that it used to be better. did you actually read your comment
@@riverscuomo7140 I don't know why this sounds so hilarious to me
Back then, people made things for fun. There wasn’t incentive of profit. It’s nice that people are being paid for their efforts now, of course, but once money gets involved, the dynamic shifts. It’s not a hobby anymore, it’s a job.
makes it harder for ppl who do legitimate minecraft challenges. If you lose trust in the general audience. Much like a movie franchise, 1 bad movie wont sink the ship, but a multitude of bad movies back to back
"Much like a movie franchise, 1 bad movie wont sink the ship, but a multitude of bad movies back to back" And in this case same with the updates

@@micayahritchie7158 If you have been in the community for a while it becomes clear that mojang is able to do better, unlike the facade they place that they just somehow as a billion dollar corporation cant make good updates.
I feel like Minecraft isn't becoming boring simply because of bad updates, and lazy development. The community itself also plays a major role in this. They no longer try to change the styll of gameplay, or the content CZcamsrs generate. They simply don't want to innovate.
Argee
Seeing how different the old is to the new I totally agree. Seeing how different the old is to the new I totally agree. There are some who fight it but for the most part people like Sethbling and SimplySarc are few and far between. No one is innovating the game to their needs nor going beyond the status quo, it’s all a blur and tbh it’s sad. I can’t tell the difference between some of the Minecraft CZcamsrs because of the 100 day thing and when it gets to that point you KNOW it’s bad. You can’t even search up a specific title because they have so many things in common!!
The last time I think we saw innovation was the 100 days and even some of Dream’s stuff and although boring now and not my cup of tea it hit the algorithm just right that very few have been attempting something different. It sucks that fake narratives have been so popular too, I miss the old days of people roleplaying and it being seen as RP, like The Yogscast Tekkit series.
Back then there were some scripted things but that didn’t take away from the actual moments and I feel like they weren’t trying to sell them as real either. I get why reality TV was replicated and it’s been apart of MC with “School Roleplay” from back in the day but it wasn’t just that and now wherever you look it all seems fake. It doesn’t help that some are blatantly lying for views and clicks- it really just shows how times have evolved, it’s not about having some fun on a server it’s about making $ which is one thing that has changed as a whole on YT.
I honestly get why what I want to watch died out and why it’s okay for the change to streamlining of videos but the game and content is 100% something that can be better. I’ll be sitting here waving my fists and hoping for the uniqueness and even some nostalgia bait like different long running series’ and that’s really alright with me. Thanks for coming to my ramble.
I don’t agree. It’s hard to innovate when you’ve done pretty much everything with existing content.
@@HungryWarden Pretty much everything? You may be right but that’s just a silly argument since there is still more one could do to innovate the game and make videos. From making your own modpack to the way you present your videos, a CZcamsr can do way more to make something interesting or unique enough and to make it not be the same old same old. They have the resources too, many of the older MC dudes who innovated the game show ways you can change things up which many have used since command blocks exist.
I’ve seen a lot of good content come from MC both old and new but I honestly think there’s more untapped potential that would create more buzz and help the community stay less boring.
That's true. I think Gen Youth, worst Gen Zoomers and Gen Alpha youtubers are to blame for Minecraft's content getting worse.
This is why formats like video essays are thriving now, they avoid age demographics and instead aim for people who just wanna learn about niche perspectives or have 2 hours of analysis to think about as they do, effectively using it like radio was used during car trips. I feel using minecraft as the visual background for such content would be a perfect fit for the new issues in the genre, but that does kinda sidestep the issues with the platform as a whole you mentioned, pff.
Tysm for making the video!!
This style of videos is indeed nice to just, listen to, like a podcast.
Have it running in the background while doing something else.
Sometimes most video essays are "hating on something or something unpopular opinion" and basically a rant of somebody angry without any substance or thought.

I remember seeing a comment on Reddit a few years ago that has stayed with me all this time
“CZcams was better when it was a hobby than when it was a job”
I think this somes things up pretty well.
A lot of things end up being more enjoyable as a hobby then as a job.
Once something becomes a job, you're gonna hate it after a while, sooner or later, doesn't really matter, it's gonna get grating after a while.
@@simplysmiley4670Thats not at all the point. The point was youtube was better when people were doing what they wanted instead of what should do well on the algorithm to make money.
I feel like the 'issues' with modern youtube videos is the reason for the explosion in the popularity of streaming
Gotta agree. Streaming has taken over what would’ve been let’s plays 10 years ago. Internet content has been polarized to heavily edited videos to unedited streams/vods and unscripted podcasts. Idk if I personally prefer it, but I think we can all agree that too much of either is bad.
Never been Into streaming so I can agree
Streaming has a core problem though. It's streaming. Live content. Ain't nobody got time to spend their evening watching someone else play a game. I rather play the game myself. And if it is a series, it has the same problem as TV, you miss a day, you missed a joke the chat has turned into inside meme.
Completely agree. Most modded MC letsplayers I've watched are now streaming.
I get filtered by streams because they are too long with too much downtime. Some games having boring segments of gameplay aside, often the streamer is just sitting there not even playing but talking to chat or whatever. I can be doing anything else
One of the main draws for me to toycat's channel is that his vids are aimed at adults. I'm in my late 30s and got into MC as part of the older crowd that joined during the pandemic. I was really getting sick of finding MC vids with interesting premises only to realise it was content for kids and so it was a real godsend when I discovered toycat also made MC vids (I was subscribed to his geography channel first). Lol I actually commented on my surprise about this on his other channel but everyone thought I was just trying to be funny.
if you think toycat's content is aimed for adults, you might be a literal child. nobody making content with an adult audience in mind talks like the lady at a daycare. posting memes with swears is super mature, especially when you do it just to censor them because you are catered towards an immature audience in a game marketed towards kids. he at least talks about higher concepts an older audience can be interested in, hence i'm here, but there's just a dearth of content on some of these topics and he is at least cool enough to cover them. he does have videos more original than other creators like this one.

Have you considered:
"Aimed for Adults" doesnt mean "dont have to worry about getting demonetized"? CZcams is KNOWN for snapping you for swearing, especially in the first 5 seconds.
Are you *sure* you're an adult, if you somehow missed the giant neon sign of "The Bot is a menace" for the past several years?

Some helpful numbers:
1 MC day = 20 min
10 MC days = 3 hr 20 min
100 MC days = 1 day 7 hr 20 min (33 hr 20 min)
1,000 MC days = 13 days 21 hr 20 min (333 hr 20 min)
10,000 MC days = 138 days 21 hr 20 min (3,333 hr 20 min)
100,000 MC days = 1,388 days 21 hr 20 min (33,333 hr 20 min)
and so on...
10^n Minecraft days = (1.3 * 10^(n-2) + 8/9 * (10^(n-3) - 1)) days 21 hours and 20 minutes in real time.
its so frustrating that youtubers have had to resort to tricks like this because I like smaller creators doing stuff themselves now you can't do anything yourself it's so annoying.
Thanks for the honesty, and I honestly do agree with most of what's been said, but I think this is part of an overarching problem with platforms like TikTok (or any trying to replicate TikTok) and the short attention span type of content we're headed for. Older movies with slower pacing can almost be unwatchable for me at times when they used to be engaging, and that in combination with seeing kids (of my age at that time) also finding slower paced content unwatchable is concerning. The addictive potential of the internet is now being fully exploited.
Something important worth considering is modern youtube is an optimised dopamine farm.
Almost every video I see on the platform is a series of high moments chained back to back to back, I thought I'd be safe avoiding having my brain rotted by only watching shorts content but it took me a long time to realise the long videos I like are effectively just a series of shorts compiled together in a cohesive storyline.
It's addictive to click on a video and get instant gratification, instantly feel happy seeing the high moment, then another high moment and another.
But it destroys your dopamine, it makes you depressed, your attention span is worse, but the button to watch something entertaining is always just a click away.
Modern youtube isn't built to be a place to talk about yourself and your life, it's a dopamine farm and it's a very well optimised one.
It's not on the viewer to just "watch what they want to see", it's on the viewer to break out on an intentionally highly addictive cycle youtube itself has created.
50 seconds in and best video i've seen come from you in a while, coming out and stating facts that everyone needs to hear

Ugly truth HAHAHA
He’s only gaining from it. Did you watch the video?
I first realized Hardcore was easily cheated when Grian did his series with Smallishbeans and GoodTimesWithScar. He died like half way through his 100 days and “started over” (he told his audience this immediately and just continued playing with a “second” life) I admired him for saying it outright and just saying “I fudged staying in the world so I can continue playing with my friends and making content” There was some hilarious moments after that too. Just tell the truth and it still makes great content!
This video makes me feel even MORE weird, running a channel with uncut old school content and a 1300+ Minecraft series since 5+ years. And at the same time, it makes me feel special :D
I watch a lot of old Minecraft videos. But if you go too far back, the mechanics are different. "How to farm XYZ" sometimes changes.
I find it fascinating that apparently playing old versions is emerging as a trend (if CZcams recommendations I get are anything to go by).
In the united states any organization with at least 50 employees is required to offer health insurance, so dream is either providing health insurance or violating employee rights
i mean hes a millionaire he probably provides health insurance, if he didnt people would already know because it would somehow end up on twitter
@@wiss_yt you would be surprised by the amount of people who dont know the rights they have simply because they never knew better. Teenagers for example might not know they cant work more than a certain amount of hours a week without work permits on school weeks
That’s under the implication that all 50 are full time or equivalent, when in reality the majority are probably contractors for his company and don’t get any of the benefits that a full time employee would.

Very funny that you mention Yongscast. I actually have been rewatching their Shadow of Israphel series after having to search for it, as it’s one i grew up with. Though you make some good points about Catering and the like, if you note my most successful videos personally are Train crashes done through mods, it really shows what people seem to like and how even using mods and the like is another part of the common thing these days, as modded title videos get so many views, as opposed to the failure that was my attempt at an earlier Let’s Play in Vanilla game. It’s interesting to study this stuff
The reason you know hardcore is reliable, is when the CZcamsr streams. The person can only lie when it happens off camera.
Also, Sandiction showed his dead when he died off camera, which was great.
I think there was a video somewhere that showed how you can pull off a trick. You just have to stream with a delay and quickly rollback your death, while claiming connection issues. I dont remember the method exactly.
That's why your channel is so refreshing. You have these challenges in your livestream and in your videos that I don't see in other Minecraft CZcamsrs.
I always never really minded people hiring editors, because it was still usually the player being the main person, with maybe a couple other people just to help make the videos look a bit smoother for example, but now yeah I think the person you see in large channels is much less significant to the main channel
You think it is just minecraft?
It's contagious.
It's everywhere.
If someone can get money for what they do, they'll optimise the hell out of it, and more and more people will follow and do the same thing.
I miss the let’s plays though, there’s only like one good minecraft let’s play channel left 😢
There are a lot of small growing channels doing let's plays. You just have to look them up
I came across a channel called About Oliver recently and he's just finished a great series of streams where he plays completely blind, with no back seating. Worth checking out if you fancy watching someone new. I honestly never thought it'd be possible for someone to get that far in MC on their own without help
I cannot recommend soupsoup's how to make minecraft fun again series enough. It's honestly amazing and it actually got me back into mc
There’s a channel I found called polarlotus who started a whole second channel for let’s plays called PolarlotusLP and he’s doing a Minecraft let’s play on there but his main channel is all over the place I have no clue what he’s doing with it lol
I would recommend ActMC ‘s lets play. He’s going through every version, updating each episode. It’s a brand new channel but very good.
I've gone back to some old minecraft videos before. Some of them are still really good, but others are just so bad. People complain about the new style of minecraft videos and say they miss the old kind of videos, but there are still tons of people uploading older style videos. I've tried watching both some recent, classic-style lets plays and old, popular lets plays that I didn't watch when I was younger, but I honestly can't get into them.
Yeah, I like the older videos. There aren't really any old-style modded videos which is a bit annoying. Might have to do one of those.
My tastes in videos changes over time. I enjoy going back and watching old series videos and also watching new content. My favorite content makers are Prowl8413 and BluJay games both of which deserve way more subscribers in my view. Channels that don't have a staff to help with production end up burned out and we as a community then miss out on their presence - Wadzee for example. Andrew is a genius and was one of the first Minecraft channels I ever subbed to.
Seeing how different the old is to the new I totally think CZcams is also creating a downfall for MC. There are some who fight it but for the most part people like Sethbling and SimplySarc are few and far between. you are one of the only channels that has changed in a way that matches how i have changed over the years. I remember watching old xbox 360 update videos after school. Thank you.
That's why I love sandiction, his challenges are actually legit (he goes it step by step and makes sure he gathers the materials even when he has them stored) plus the fact that when he died in his hardcore world he showed it to us.
This is why I watch old minecraft videos like Etho's or your own from a decade and a half ago or older. They are better than every way from modern content.
There's no way Dream has 50 full time contractors. I'd say 15 MAX
He's a proven cheater anyway, it's not like we can trust his word
People lying on the internet is ubiquitous as people speeding on the roadways. I never saw the purpose of trying to impress of bunch of strangers with lies, but when the CZcams algorithm is rewarding content creators for misleading or outright lying to their audience then I can see why it happens. There is also a CZcams culture of both 1-up-manship and hacking the algorithm that pushes creators to do things that are geared towards garnering views in potentially dishonest ways. I steer clear of those people.
This is why i don't watch hardcore after a zillion random CZcamsrs started doing hardcore, inevitable someone cheats
Me 15 seconds in: "OMG, he's using a celery stalk for a microphone what even is my life onaotgihavnoienwoiwnoiegna" *dies*
It's the truth like this which makes someone like me realize the content I want to make is in the past and the idea of going back to "the good days" is long gone. This video is hard for me because not only is it crushing my hopes, it's also making me realize how bad the worlds become.
to make it worse most if not all the creators who inspired me are either gone or following the formula layed out in most of this video.
I still prefer to watch a lot of the older series-type playthroughs of the games I am most interested in. I still learn things much better from watching people legitimately playing the game and that makes watching the video worth my time. I also prefer watching them in my own time rather than watching Live on the streamers' schedules. (ETA: Live streams are also filled with a lot of interacting with the chat; whereas an honestly edited and instructional Let's Play cuts out that sort of stuff and, again, makes it worth my time to watch it.)
There are still a few content creators still doing that sort of informative series on Minecraft (just incorporating the updates) - Pixlriffs' Survival Guide comes immediately to mind and he's one of my favorite Minecraft content creators. It's just that there are more and more people making the "hyped" content (like 100 days and other "sensationalized" and often faked challenges) and that means the viewer just has to look harder for the quality, more educational content that is still out there.
I am curious then -- what is the size of your production team?
Also, what celery do you recommend? I've tried the leaf-on, but it really fails to pick up the high pitches properly.

I wanted and tried to make videos back in 2013. I remember all the major Minecraft youtubers at the time all had at least one thing that would set them apart from their peers, even if they were doing a mod review on the same mod, or playing the same adventure map. There was once a personality behind all the Minecraft youtubers of the past, that has just been lost... This personality most certainly had an impact on the people that once watched that content my, self included. Which is why its so painful to see the state of Minecraft CZcams as it is now. I feel like I could confidently say that if I saw Minecraft CZcams as it is today I would not be nearly as inspired as I was 10 years ago.
Differently harder than people think to run a CZcams channel by yourself

I've wondered from time to time, If some creator's challenges are genuine or whether or not they really spent a 100 in-game days doing a thing. I don't know if it's important but if creators keep trying to outdo one another for views, It will most definitely lead to more and more videos being either incredibly difficult to produce or just impossible to do without deception.
I did not expect ibxtoycat of all people to make a video that hits so hard right off the bat.

I’ve been running my own channel by myself since 2022 and in the past 1.5 years I’ve managed to get 300+ subscribers. This kind of proves your point If you want to be semi successful on CZcams now you need a team to help you with all of the things that happen in the background like editing. I do plan on hiring a team for my channel in the future but right now I can’t afford one so I’ll probably be running my channel by myself for the next few years :l
Theres a small youtuber called soupsoup that is making content like the old days.

The whole world has changed - and not necessarily for good. :-( Sad. I am turning 75 this year. And I still love to play minecraft. I just learned about cheats last year! Yup... And editing. And I always wanted to know how a person could float around building like they did. I finally found out in creative. Yup. LOL I finally did some builds with creative.. it was fun. I used cheats so I could find my village again - I just wanted to be able to find my village. I used to find them by doing f3 and then doing that every so often to make sure I was headed in right direction and I found it the hard way - or if I forgot to get coordinates I just flat lost my village. LOL But regardless it's just me playing so hey, I play survival without cheats, I play it with cheats, I do creative some to make my biggest build I think in December. My computer crashed two weeks ago. Oh yeah. There went my worlds. I had not saved them on a stick or an exterior drive or whatever. I did that big auto sorter for inventory and my goodness it was really nice and was huge. Gone gone gone..... I have another computer, but it will take me a while to get my excitement to play MC again.. I tried a couple days ago - did a place to do village under "fake" lake and I have mods for the first time and shaders. It's fun - but under the fake lake was really hard to see - and it just wasn't the same. Hmmmm. So I will get back to it - just have to take a week off, I guess. But it has changed. People are making millions - and I just play mine for fun and make zip - I do so enjoy it. If I could just record as I played and throw it on a channel and if people like it fine- if not - I don't give a HOOT! :-) That would be ok.. but now people want way out there - no matter what you have on your YT channel. I am not way out there. :-) God Bless! Here's to MC.

How did we get to the stage where celery can now be used as a microphone
Honestly what makes it worse is waiting for so long knowing I wanted to make content like Stampy's only for it to now feel like you're forced into making this slop overproduced garbage to gain traction. People can defend who they want, and hell I like LTN's original 100 days since it was fresh and new, but now it's over done, the idea and uniqueness has dried up and devolved to people doing the bare minimum for views and a fat check. It's no longer people doing it because they enjoy making videos, which is what made old minecraft so fun, people truly put themselves into the content, they laughed, had fun, messed around with each other, they used THEIR personality in videos, unlike modern minecraft, not naming names, but they all feel fake, some are just annoying and others are super holier than thou with their opinions. Now that's not to say playing a character is bad, it just means you need to put more thought into it like Stampy did towards the end of Lovely World and like he did for his helpers, they were no longer just his friends joining him, they were specifically designed characters to put distance between him and some of his former friends because of what they did (Lee and Lionmaker being the main examples). All together I think minecraft content is just far too over produced both in the size of the teams and the beating a dead horse with ideas, no large creators make unique original ideas anymore which doesn't make sense given the amount of people who work on them, you'd think that many eyes and brains would come up with unique new ideas, but they all stick to what's safe instead of making their own path through the CZcams Landscape, it feels more and more like the days of innovating entertainment are over, large studios like Marvel can do the same stuff and still find success and that same issue is happening on CZcams and the gaming industry, and much like the movie, tv, and gaming industries the smaller creators are putting more passion and effort into videos than large multi million subscriber channels.
I can tell its exactly what youtube wants me to experience too, everytime i watch a minecraft video a 100 days video is always next on autoplay. I never actually click on one but i end up watching one anyway, i dont even enjoy the format
Well said Toycat. People say they want to watch old school style let’s plays but they don’t actually want to watch old school style let’s plays.
Minecraft videos then: hi welcome today im gonna be showing you how to build a simple house that till looks nice
Minecraft videos now: TODAY IM GONNA BE GETTING EVERY EFFECT IN MINECRAFT HARDCORE
I have plans to start a channel with knowledge I've picked up about how to get people to actually watch videos. Clickable titles and thumbnails, captivating opening portions, etc.
I can tell you right now i'm not gonna be able to upload enough to make it successful. The intent is to just get the videos out there to hopefully grow the userbase of a couple obscure shows I like. I'm no team of people 😅
Toycat is holding celery.
I prefer the older styles of videos, for example hypixel bed wars, let's plays, etc. I'm not really a fan of the 100 days stuff. I try to make similar content to what I like, what the big youtubers used to make that I want to see them still make, but especially as a very small channel, those types of videos get no views anymore
I recently found a duo of friends who made very nice mc videos in the latest version. They made a decent couple of episodes in a world, and I enjoyed watching their simple editing and building. They stopped uploading recently. Obviously, they were small so they didn't have a reason to keep going, but I loved watching their videos and it's tragic to me that if the video doesn't have 10k cuts per second then people just click off.
The channel is Chip n' Pickle btw.
I like your microphone. What model is that?
It took me too long to realize some of yhte background footage was from what seems to be a camp half blood map
I havent watched your content in over a decade and this video reminded me why I loved your content in my younger years. Just so genuine
The way to have a good consumer experience with Minecraft CZcams content is to curate it for yourself. I mainly watch Toycat, PhoenixSC, a couple of advanced redstoners, and a handful of Hermits. I never visit the Minecraft topic page to see what's popular, and I only watch videos from my recommendations if they seem legitimate and interesting/useful to me as a player. Anything that seems overly hyped up or sensational is something I actively avoid. I won't even watch a tutorial for a farm that seems like it might actually be good, if the person giving the tutorial is just a little too enthusiastic about it. There is enough intrinsic value in Minecraft the game itself (as opposed to the cultural phenomenon around it) to make it worth my time and attention as a player and as a CZcams viewer, and I'm not interested in content that tries to artificially fabricate reasons for me to watch it, because I feel that it devalues the game itself.
Most minecraft content that feels real these days is either in a commentary format or (usually smaller) creators making a challenge series and recording their work in a live stream.
In my opinion, the most effective way to make content that feels more real is by essentially streaming the whole thing uncut and live on a streaming channel, then making a summary preferably with narration and cutting out the boring bits. This has the downside that streams can require a lot of set-up and can be hours of live footage without taking breaks.
I wish modern mobs like the piglin, warden and all that were added during Minecraft’s golden era. Just imagine the role play videos.
Times have indeed changed, but I still appreciate the occasional busty Alex
ahem his intro is with an onion
The real reason we have so many more vandals on Minecraft than we did before is simpler than you might think:
* Those vandals, who are morally questionable, have always existed. In the past, many of them weren't brave enough to try the things that they do now. As they saw others doing morally questionable things, became more and more comfortable with satisfying their evil desires. Also, the Minecraft community is very huge now, and many of the vandals just didn't realize how much opportunity there was for the Minecraft community to be exploited and deceived. Now that they are aware of the opportunity, they are simply doing what they naturally want to do: lying to others for their own profit.
As some would put it "How bad can I possibly be? I'm justing doing what comes naturally to me."
>In the past, many of them weren't brave enough to try the things that they do now.
Correction, they simply didnt get much attention. Those who did were likely the funny ones who were comically bad at hiding it.
>As they saw others doing morally questionable things, became more and more comfortable with satisfying their evil desires.
This feels like you ripped it out of The Funny Worship Book. It's (most of the time) not outright evil, it's *selfish.* (Or Lazy)
>they are simply doing what they naturally want to do: lying to others for their own profit.
As far as some youtubers go: They lie to ensure they can keep making content, and keep getting views. Everyone wants to be successful, some people will be happy letting RNG decide if they take off, some want to ensure they have THE best chances.
@@higueraft571 Thanks for pointing those things out. I hadn't really considered them. I think your explanation is actually more accurate.
I enjoy the fact that your holding a brocolli at the start of the video
Money
Yeah, pretty much
I don’t think I’ve seen someone use Celery yet as a fake microphone, but it works
For a while, I've been considering making some hardcore Minecraft videos centered around a particular theme that I don't really see much. Just for fun since I doubt I could be profitable with it.
That said, this makes me wonder if my videos would even work or not. I don't really keep up with the community and not sure how to so I have no idea how to guage it.
yo were can I buy that green mic that you are using at 0:30 ?
Times are changing, and I can't let go...
Like you said it use to be a community for players who actually had passion and care for the games development. As to now where many influencers use the game for clout and viewership. This is why you have so many new Minecraft players streaming making noob mistakes. Or maybe I just have more appreciation to the game since I was able to play since the beginning hell I even played cave game
with minecraft it also has to do with the fact that thwre is so many updates you have already experienced the previous ones and have no need to watch them. DanTDMs hardcore series was the last letsplay I watched snd now I just really watch minecraft commentary (not with minecraft gameplay but about minecraft) because everything else is a copy of another big trend
CZcams is no longer CZcams... Its _UsTube_ because you need a whole team in order to make a super successful channel.
