Can I use silicone lube on my suspension parts?
I dont think they should replace the melted panel at all. No proof it is a flaw. We dont want Toyota replacing anything that isnt their fault because that woukd drive up the cost for everyone else.
I definitely think the guy just rested his arm on the door and probably came from somewhere that he needed some DEET to keep bugs away and got too sweaty and it drained off his hand and elbow. I think the guy who bought it that way should have had it taken care of before he bought it.
I would have checked the CarFax before buying. Is there evidence of overspray or masking lines?
No way Toyota should be replacing that door panel. That guy had something on his shirts, skin, whatever. Or tried to clean it with something way too strong. That didn't happen by itself and nothing happened at all to the others? bullsh*t.
If she ain't a Chrysler, I ain't buyin' er. 2008 Chrysler Sebring 2.7L with 279,000 on 'er, original water pump
Wach for scamers..
@@DemonEmbarasser My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee which is from the same parent company had all kinds of issues. Replaced water pump, fuel pump, and transmission by the time it reached 120k miles. Traded it in and never looked back
Never seen a Toyota with “melted” door panels. user error
All these new cars and trucks are made of cheap metal, and plastic crap..
I don't think it's fair to assume the door card melted because of the sun or heat. Many times things like lotion, sunscreen, or other chemicals on the skin can cause a reaction with the material. It seems odd that none of the other panels are having a related issue.
Yup, Sunscreen.
@Phillip Banes No, but the mosquito repellant the Marines issued me would have. It dissolved the ear pieces on my flight glasses, for instance, but sun screen didn't.
I was just going to say this. Spray on sunscreens and lotions and even spray deodorants and such have volatiles in them that are a good match to the stuff used to make these rubbery components, and unlike leather which crackles and splits and fades but can be dyed back, these plasticky bits will simply get mushy, fade, and then bubble, chip, and peel. Just look at how acetone eats foam cups or bug repellent can melt plastic (great for clearing old foggy headlights on a car you don't care about) and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Driver error.
It's cheap crap....common sense
I saw a Sequoia once that I was somewhat interested in. It has 270,000+ miles and it had been very well maintained. The only thing is they were asking $12,000 and wouldn't budge a single cent. It just wasn't worth that kind of money with that mileage even if it was a Toyota.
$200k+ miles is a lot no matter what the vehicle is. I see a lot of people get ripped off from high mileage vehicles you made the right choice in my opinion.
Not worth buying ANY used car from a dealer. The amount of interest you'll be paying is high enough that you'll probably pay more for a used car than paying for a new one.
@@Strange_Man1911 Dealers will rip you off. You will pay way above market value. This Sequoia though was a private seller. It seems like a lot of private sellers started checking out what dealers were asking for vehicles and they just rose their prices to match. This guy just wouldn't budge on what he was asking. He probably ended up finding a sucker who gave him the $12,000.
That many miles should have been cut down the half that price.
I’m on my second Sequoia (2020 Platinum) and it has been flawless. My first Sequoia (2008 SR5) was almost trouble free. Finally had to replace the water pump at 100K miles. Great vehicles.
Dam a water pump at 100k?! My dads 2006 f150 with the dreaded 5.4 3v is at 160k and trouble free engine and transmission. Ac went out, cd changer went out, door squeaking, and a window slippin.
I've wanted one for a long time, but I'm afraid to get it home and discover I can't deal with squeezing past the front of it in the garage. How much garage space do you need to comfortably fit one? I've measured my garage and I know the length of the vehicle, but I'm not sure if it would be a huge hassle or not.
@@LordPrometheous length is not the problem. Width is the issue. If you get the electric foldaway side mirrors, you may be ok. I have a 3 car garage with one side with no post in the middle. I do have to angle my Tundra in to make it fit with the garage door closed.
@@TXAG81 got it, thanks.
Scotty has fond memories of the old days before "electronic crap" but he's nevertheless a master at using his fancy scan tools to find where the problems are.
That door card damage just looks like the result of someone resting their grubby elbow on the same spot over many years.
Good argument for the "cheap hard plastic" like in my dodge. My grubby elbow leaves crud where it rests but with the right cleaning products, the crud is lifted and removed and leaves the 12 year old panel looking like new.
It's not old......
I'm sure his elbow looks even worse.
It’s a used vehicle. Toyota is not responsible for that car. Who knows what chemicals where put on that leather. If it was purchased new the owner might have a leg to stand on but it’s a used vehicle. I don’t like hitting a company up for fixes when they can’t be held responsible for something they can’t control. He might even have a case if it was a certified pre owned but just buying a Toyota doesn’t guarantee everything is perfect and Toyota should pick up the tab if something should go wrong.
Scotty, I'm going to disagree with you on this one. My bet is that the previous owner used Deet (ie Deepwods Off or Cutters) or some other chemical on his arm and THAT is what caused the damage. That's not really Toyota's fault IMO.
100% agree. Deet absolutely destroys anything rubber/plastic/vinyl
I am inclined to believe that door was swapped at some point - the other symptoms are incidental...
Yes, that Deet does melt plastic.
I know... for sure DEET repellents WILL melt the finish on wood🎶instruments... nasty stuff.
Other than "natural" repellents which don't work, there is Picardin that doesn't melt stuff, but seems like its being suppressed in repellents maybe too toxic?
Doubt they will replace anything if it’s been in a wreck lol not their fault
I used to be a service adviser for an Acura/Honda dealership and a customer came in with a 2 year old Acura TL and complained that the spot where he rested his elbow all the time became dented. Acura replaced his leather door interior under warranty but noted that this would happen again and it wouldn't be covered under warranty the next time.
You got this one wrong Scotty. Im almost certain thats from bug spray. This is especially the case since there was no damage on the front passengers door panel, which was without a sun visor.
If it is allowed to just sit on the plastic, it breaks down the plastic like acetone, then parking it in the sun afterwards results in this. A similar thing happened in my dodge a few years ago that I used to take hunting. Id have my arm, with bug spray applied, resting on the panel, and then it'd be parked in the sun all day while I was out. Looked pretty much the same as that panel.
Agree... Toyota is still a great car manufacturer...
I've owned a 2011 Limited Sequoia and currently own a 2018 Platinum Sequoia and they have never had melted door cards. The prior owner did that some way which is why it is no where else. That was NOT a Toyota defect.
Nasty inner elbow
Looks like sun fade
Agree, go to a custom shop.
DEET will do that to a door card. DEET is found in insect repellent.
Elbow grease and body oils deteriorated that door panel.
Once again, Scotty proves that Toyotas are the best and most reliable cars by nitpicking at the tiniest little things that probably weren't even flaws from Toyota while showing how little actually goes wrong with them. God bless you Scotty.❤️❤️
Facts
A friend of mine had bought an old 2008 Toyota Camry 5 years back, and the dashboard had started to melt because of years of exposure to the hot Australian sun. Toyota replaced the dash as it was a known fault for that model and had been part of a recall.
The OZ outback scares the crap out of us pansy Americans.
Probably melted from bug spray on the driver's arm.
I bought a new 2022 Rav4 when there was shortage. It was made in Canada and took over two months to get it. The first rainstorm I was in while driving it, I noticed a clicking sound. When I got where I was going I realized that the windshield wiper blade had not been snapped into place and had slipped down. It scratched the molding below the windshield. I took it to the Toyota dealer where the service scheduler took a picture of it to show the the service manager. I never heard back from them. Maybe Toyota has been on top so long that they don't have to work so hard to keep customers. Another thing I found was that the oil was not full when it was new. I've bought a good number of new vehicles over the years and never seen that before. Imagine how much oil Toyota could save by not filling the oil to the full mark. The guy at Toyota tried to tell me that not full was considered full. I'm not impressed with their attitude.
That is from someone's elbow and arm on the door. I've seen that before.
That "melting" is most likely caused by some kind of lotion or mosquito repellant the previous owner was wearing. The solvents in some mosquito repellants will dissolve plastic.
Ours was melted. Both driver's and passenger side. 2011 Sequoia. Known problem for this interior color scheme. I went to an upholstery guy. $265.00. Problem solved. I, though, didn't contact Toyota after seeing others had tried and failed. Also, had a solenoid in the transmission go out. Covered under extended warranty. Other than that, great, great family hauler. Wish they made one with an extended rear for more cargo room behind the 3rd row when it's up and occupied. It has less cargo area behind the 3rd row than our old 2011 Sienna (also a great vehicle). Traded only because my wife was tired of the minivan.
My 2021 Venza could not remember the driver seat position (the dealer couldn't fix it either). Neither could my son's 2022 RAV4.
To fix the seat memory, it must be "initialized". Do the following: From outside the car, run the driver's seat all the way forward and leave it there. Then, run the seat all the way up, and leave it there. Then, run the seat back all the way down and leave it there. Now, set the seat memory by pressing and holding "SET" then the the "1" button. The seat position memory has now been initialized! Reposition the seat to any desired setting and set the memory - it will now be remembered.
I'll send you my bill. 😉
About the door situation, I have a similar melting spot on my driver's door on my '12 Scion xB. The last two owners lived in California and I'm in Utah.
Please check if that Sequoia was made in Mexico. (Number 3 the first digit on the VIN number) The unit was t bone wrecked on the driver's door. Thanks for the video.
My daughter bought a new Platinum Sequoia at the end of 2020. For some foolish reason, she traded it in in September, ‘22 for a one year old Suburban. Absolutely stupid move. All the Chevy electronic nightmares are beginning to rear their ugly heads. All this for a couple more mpg?!
Scotty, I’ve seen armrest areas degraded by acidic human sweat/skin oils. This is not a Toyota issue!
That's exactly what it is, dirt and sweat from drivers arm. Just clean that door.
@leo leo so you're telling me my sweat will cause my car to melt? Man these cars are so weak they can't even handle sweat! That's news to me.
@@kalashnikov1343 Polyvinyl Chloride is susceptible to such secretions, and has always been. Leather, too. Change your Ph and this isn’t an issue.I have 52 and 28 year old Land Cruisers whose driver’s doors and armrests are constantly used. No sign of wear. Alkaline is key.
Toyota needs to work on Grand Sequoia since they have a grand highlander.
@@Perich29 I’d rather a less techy, ultimate off-road LC!
Guaranteed that Toyo will deny coverage for that door trim panel. It's abundantly clear that it's caused from the driver's skin oils and perspiration from his or her sweaty arm! Tennessee has blistering heat during their sweltering humid summers. Everyone sweats like a pig in that climate! I've been around cars as long as Scotty, and while I would concur that Toyos have always been well-engineered and have maintained a long-standing reputation of mechanical reliability, the vinyl that they used on their interior components was inferior and always sucked; especially on the driver's side (which gets 100 times more wear than the rest of the car).
I tend to doubt that the damage on the door card is a result of "driver's skin oils and perspiration..." I have a 2009 Toyota that I bought brand new and I live in Florida where we sweat all year long. I frequently put my bare arm in the exact area where this Sequoia has the damage. The inside of the driver door on my Toyota is discolored somewhat from the skin oils and dirt that gets mixed with it but it is nowhere near as messed up as in the example in the video. It had to be something more caustic than perspiration and the natural oil on human skin to do that!
I have this interior with the same issue. The grey and tan doesn't do this. It should not melt with common chemicals.
Basically quality control is not as good as before
Lol buys a really old used Toyota and now wants Toyota to fix it on their dime!. Just a cheap sleazy move on the new owners part.
Thanks for the tip. Since I have an older car, I haven't had a chance to work on newer cars. I will fix and reset the computer codes first.
Most Flammable brake cleaner will melt Certain plastics, Someone Probably tried to Clean that black Spot with some wrecking the inner door card, Wasn't very bright.
4:53 My Corolla has a bigger camera than that! lol
Scotty when you’re coming back to RI? In need of a legendary mechanic like yourself to check my car
Do not plan to buy any brand-new Toyota. If you want a brand-new one, you can wait for the all-new Grand Highlander HybridMAX.
All the rubber around the windows of my Sienna is deteriorating.
I'll never forget what happened to the dash of our 07 Camry melted from the sun and created a reflection that went directly into your eyes but they did recall the issue
It is disgraceful. I have a 2015 Avalon (bought it new) and only after 3 month of use, the door surfaces in contact with my left arm, started to melt… Toyota replaced them, but the rest of the interior has been melting slowly. My car is most of the time inside a garage or under cover parking so it is an issue related to the use of very cheap materials.
Next video: I'm Calling Out Toyota, Why Did You Make an 2004 Tundra Double Cab with a Hard Cheap Plastic Dash and Sticky Passenger side Air Bag Cover.
Always enjoy Scotty's driveway videos. And I noticed the Upshaw's, across the street, planted a new pine tree and trimmed their bushes. And then the Klopeks, on the other corner, got a new roof and painted the garage door. Nice to see the neighbors taking good care of their properties!!!
That "POS" while not perfect, will be dancing on the grave of every Jeep & Escalade out there.
I don't think it's melting. My '05 Lexus was showing the same stuff on the door panel by me (the driver) and it was just an accumulation of oils from my arm. It actually cleaned off. Same for the console cover, I thought the leather was taking a crap and it turned out it just needed to be thoroughly cleaned - now it's like new.
1:27 The expression on that fat grey cat, gets me every time. *That is Fuuuuny* . 😲😲😲
It's obvious someone had the window rolled down and had their arm out. Sorry, but Toyota is not responsible for sweat erosion.
If it’s out of warranty, he will incur the cost. I’ll just replace it if he can find the part. This beast of a suv is discontinued

The infiniti j30 from the 90s had the same problem on its door panel
@scottykilmer. 2012 Chevy Cruze 158,019 miles. Got my transmission replaced a few weeks back maybe a couple months actually and I get “transmission hot idle engine when driving over 57 it seems for a period of time. But then it doesn’t do it sometimes. I don’t understand what could be wrong. Good transmission put in just hoping to find a few answers maybe. Much appreciated, you’re the only mechanic I trust. Trying to keep this car running. It never did this but a couple times before I had to get a new one and it’d do it on my 2 hour drives after going 90isj for too long of a time but rarely
Low fluid level, maybe?
Body grease/corncob.seen it before.yuk.
How come none of these vehicles ever trip codes DOWN the wazoo ???
Everything is working on my 275K miles 2010 Kia Borrego.
Strangely enough, only the driver door panel is damaged? Use the 'Elementary Dear Watson' power of deduction for the of likeliest possibility. Chemicals exposed from the driver's arm or clothing that caused the damage! I.E. - lotion, rough jacket, or something else came in contact with door? KY Jelly perhaps?
Kentucky Jelly on biscuits
All 2-gen Platinum Sequoias with the red rock interior have melted driver's door panels. My 2010 suffers from this unfortunately, and I've seen a ton in my owners club of Sequoias here in China. It's weird, but it only happens on the red rock interior, and only on the driver side. I think it has to do with the chemicals in the color dye reacting with sweat and UV poorly.
Thats from topical medicine or lotion of some kind. My dads vehicles all do the same thing due to medicated lotion he has to use on his elbows and skin.
Yep
Scotty: I have all Toyota cars. The most reliable.
Scotty: Have you seen my Triumph motorcycle?
Looks like the arm was rested on the door. Possible wear mark?
I can’t prove it 100%, but I would bet a dozen fresh Krispy Kremes that the prior owner was a rather beefy individual who rested their entire bloated arm along that space between bites of a whopper, large fries, pie, ice cream, microwaved burrito and Diet Coke. Perspiration and body oils (especially those with a high concentration of deep fryer oil) can wreak havoc on a vehicle interior. The failure of the power seat is another tip-off.
Some cars melt being left near windows as mirror affect
Scotty, call out Toyota on the rust problem with FJ Cruiser frames!
My 2015 platinum tundra is also melting on 3 doors and on front of vehicle inside. Took it to Toyota they said its due to the heat in Florida. And denied fixing my claim with no explanation besides its not under warranty. PLEASE HELP !!!!!!
All the bodyshops I deal with all got dealer level scan tools as well as mechanics that know how to deal with issues including electrical
My lexus dashboard had cracks- they had a recall
The old owner had acidic skin oil. Toyota should not replace it for free
I believe that is a DVD slot, and not a CD player Scotty!
Scotty should review Subaru new & older.. I don't have one now but I did in 1982.. I am a 2005 Corolla guy now (2 of them) but Subaru claims to be most dependable car on the road..
I had a 1980 DL wagon & a 1983 GL wagon. Both had a lever to activate 4 wheel drive from 2 wheel drive and adjustable front and rear suspension which raised the vehicle 3 or so inches for going off road, which I did, ALOT. In 1978 or 1979 when Subaru first showed up in the U.S. their 1st wagon they sold was called "YAMA YAGI" (think I spelled that right) which means "MOUNTAIN GOAT" in Japanese. They named it that, due to the fact it could go almost anywhere off road & yes I can attest to that. The only place I never took it was in water cuz I wasn't stupid enough to do that. I miss those cars & the good ole days. 😲😲😲
Subaru head gaskets say "hold my beer".
@@stevemccooleq Never had any head gasket issues w/ any of the Subarus I've owned *(KNOCK ON WOOD)* . Got my '97 Outback Wagon in '05 w/ 85k on it, now its at 211,410k. No H.G. issues as of yet. 🍺🍺 time. 😲😲😲
Melting... Could be that the guy dirtied his left elbow with brake fluid before driving, could it? Looks like it.
I have a 2018 RAV4 and live in Texas heat but don’t have this problem but I do have tinted windows.
I bought a used 2017 Sienna limited for 35k Canadian dollars in July and the Sunroof is leaking! Help! I tried finding drains but are having issues. It initially leaked by front passenger seat belt but now its spreading. Any ideas? I tried putting some at 205...it's winter here so only can open when we get mild days.
Scottie with a sight flex with that Celica
Toyota is not gonna replace that unless they did the repairs prior.
Scotty. I'm surprised you didn't look to confirm the car was in a wreck by looking for overspray and paint edges
That’s not Toyotas fault even my 13 Camry doesn’t have that and I didn’t always have tinted windows I just got that done last year sometime.
The best car you can buy will have a manual transmission. No doubt. And without complicated electronics, too.
I love the sequoia but the gas mileage is scary. My boss has one and I drove it a couple of times , it's a great family vehicle and I've been looking for the right used one. My F250 gets better gas mileage 😂😂😂
I mean every SUV has bad MPG. Isn't the 2023 Sequioa by around 20 MPG? A 4runner has less. Some crossovers also just have abou 2 MPG more than that.
Correct me if I'm missing something.
@@majb 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, 15 mpg combined
I looked at the Sequoia, but ended up getting a '22 Highlander. Very happy with it.
Margaret Hamilton: "I'm Melting,...Melting,..."
If I was at Toyota, I would not replace the door card. Scotty totally wrong on this one.
He had his own 'meltdown'.
I have my Prius for 20 years and it’s doing fine 😊
I know for a fact that that wasn’t the sun that ruined that door panel because I have an aunt who left bug spray sitting in the passenger seat of her Toyota Tacoma and it leaked out and ate a hole in the leather seat
The best cars to have are ones with less features installed. Less features means less problems...Toyota are generally pretty good as far as reliability goes.
Buy any car used, whether Toyota or any other and hope that the previous owner(s) maintained the car and did not ignore issue or did a shade-tree mechanic fix. Service records? Does the Toyota owner think that reliability means neglect can be part of the ownership because Toyotas are touted as 'bullet proof'? That maintenance is not required as per recommendations and intervals? People are generally reactive and not proactive with their vehicles, hence we have professional mechanics and $150 + labor costs!
The BCM is suspect. On my car the BCM has a weird fault and the radio and display delay doesn't work. It shuts off after a minute and I've been waiting for a new one for nearly a year.
That was my Sequoia. I spill a lot of hot soup and sold it As Is.
He knew that when he bought it.
A sad day for toyota is an average day for most other car manufacturers.
ive got a toyota chr love it, my maintenance package is up, so im watching scotty to maintain the car from home and save tons of cash and get off my lazy bu tt lol
They probably won’t do anything for free…am pretty sure they’ll make him pay.
It’s not a safety issue and I’m sure there’s not many if any complaints about melting interiors.
Heck they haven’t even done anything about the sun fade/melting the side view mirrors on Camrys and they say that’s not a safety issue cuz u can still see out the glass mirrors themselfs.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that Hector is running 3 Honda Civics with Spoon engines. He just came into Harrys and ordered T66 turbos with NOS and a MoTech system exhaust.
Right! We can’t forget it
Where’s the hour long Toyota advert though Scotty
Got to be kidding me, this is the best generation Sequoia especially with I Force V8
I dont want more technology in toyotas, it's just crap that breaks.
I had a Camry with a similar problem on the console. It faded. I thought it was lotion that was on my arm and elbow
Iv3 had sunscreen do this
That’s why you gotta get it pre inspected or buy certified pre owned. Dealers actually do honor warranty. You have to find the right one.
While you were test driving, the vehicle, Sasquatch was sitting behind you lol
Scotty you are amazing thx from denmark 🌹🇩🇰
Seems like an owner thing, a chemical of some sort that's been rubbed on to remove something, or maybe from the owners arm, Id say dye it, quick a easy job, it doesn't need a new door card, mobile interior guys could fix that in an hour or less.
Ill be keeping my 2015 tundra for life.
Hey Scotty hope you had a great day! Thanks for all the great utubes
Scotty always cracks me up! 😄
0:39 "Previous owner had a "hot elbow" and melted it" Who was this individual? Johnny, the human torch from the Fantastic Four? 🔥😂
Toyota would be screwed without Scottys support, do what’s right or else!
Way to take the customers word. It's not like they don't LIE, huh? Or that the side of the car that is used ALWAYS, is the one that has the issue. Almost like the driver wore or damaged it over time with something on their skin...
I have a 2002 Toyota Echo. At 11 position on the steering wheel it is melted from my hand being on it all these years. It hasn't melted. It has to due with the acid in your skin making contact with whatever material they're making the steering wheel out of. I'm assuming it goes for the door panel. The door panel being the elbow of the person resting it on the door panel
No way Something wrong with Toyota I hear they 100% reliable. "Could only buy Honda or Toyota"?
That melted interior is exactly why you just get the base model, paying extra money for crappy options is stupid.
